Wow! Thank you so much for the great information! I agree with you in that I can't imagine not putting in 100% to orientation. Good to know that they do indeed consider new graduates. I am going to try to find out more about MGH since I will be living only a few blocks away. I went to an open house at B&W a couple of weeks ago and their orientation does sound very good. I guess that is really my only pre-requisite since I am still unsure exactly what area I want to be in - I just want a good orientation with a lot of available support! What area did you do your preceptorship in at MGH? Thank you again for being so helpful!

Bummer - I am out-of-state and wish I could be in Boston tomorrow for the job fair. It seems that finding a job is going to be much harder than anticipated. Do you have any information on MGH? Good luck to you and do you mind relaying any scoop you get at the job fair? I've heard that most of hospitals have a really high retention rate - good for them, bad for us! :chuckle

I am graduating soon and really feel like I do not know the area of nursing in which I want to work. The thought of working med/surg scares me b/c I think that I will not be able to handle the fast pace and stress. I am not interested in critical care. I am FREAKING out. I want to enjoy my first year of nursing but am feeling as if nothing sounds appealing. Anyone else feel this way?

Anyone here work at NEMC in Boston? I am trying to get more information on it, but have had a very difficult time getting a nurse recruiter to return my phone calls. Any info would be greatly appreciated (opportunities for new grads, what the working env. is like, etc.). Thank you!

Thanks for the information. I am having a hard time finding what inpatient units Children's has. Can you point me in the right direction? Do you know if they ever hire new grads into the outpatient clinics? Thanks!

Murph01 - I'm moving to Boston after I graduate from my accelerated BSN program in December. I was just looking at Children's web site. Is it true that they have a gynecology unit? I'm interested in working in women's health and really enjoy working with adolescents. I'm thinking that that type of unit would be a good combination...any thoughts? Does Children's hire new grads into certain areas only?

Maybe I am interpreting your reply wrong, but are you saying that I may have trouble getting hired somewhere because I went to school in a different state?

Hi there, I am hoping some of you might be able to help me out. I will graduate with my BSN in December and will be moving to Boston at that time. I will be taking the NCLEX in January. I've looked through the packet of info from the Board of Nursing and I have a question. Can I be hired somewhere prior to taking the NCLEX? Can I practice as an RN-applicant prior to taking the NCLEX? Or do I need to have taken the NCLEX and received my license before starting orientation? In the state where I am now, you have 90 days from the day of graduation to practice as an RN-applicant, meaning you can start orientation, etc. I'm wondering if it is the same in Mass. Thank you!

I feel the SAME way! I want to enjoy my job, and I feel like if I have to work on a med surg unit I will dread going to work every day and my patients will suffer because of it. I, like you, am not interested in critical care, ICU, neuro, etc. Blows my mind that a new grad can work in the ICU, but not at the public health department. How frustrating.

I apologize for "interrupting", but I am wondering if you could tell me a little more about what you do as an RN at the public health department. I am interested in working in a non-hospital environment and am very much drawn to public health departments. Can you tell me more about your position? I feel as if we do not get a good idea of what RNs do in public health departments in my program. Thank you!

I don't have any information for you, but I am wondering the same thing. I'll be a new grad in December and will be moving to Boston at that point. Hopefully someone will respond to these posts!

ours is 94-100 A, 87-93 B, 80-86 C, anything below that you fail. it has been very hard to adjust to this scale. it gets us working harder, but it is frustrating to get a 93 on an exam and have that be a 'B'.

that's wonderful! how do the residency programs work? do you get paid for those 22 weeks?

I saw it, too! I could NOT believe it. ABC will be getting a letter from me. I am a student and we have been told from day one to never let ANYONE speak to us that way in the work environment. I am so disappointed...I was hoping that nurses would portrayed differently in this one

I think this is a great idea! I will be graduating in late 2005 from an accelerated BSN program and am about 90% sure that I want to go into Women's/Maternity nursing. I have about a million questions! I know this has been asked before, but I will be moving to the Northeast (I am currently in the South) after graduation and am wondering if hospitals hire new grads directly into PP/MI? How do I even begin my job search? If I know that I want to work on a MI floor upon graduation, do I start looking now for available positions? How will hospitals know if they will have openings in December of '05? Can I work in Massachusetts without having taken the NCLEX yet or do I need to graduate, take the NCLEX, THEN apply for jobs? I am not getting much guidance from my school. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks...

I'm in an accelerated BSN program that started last May and has me finishing in December. It is VERY intense and you must have excellent time mgmt skills. It sounds like you would be fine. My program is very competitive - the majority of us are perfectionists and all came into the program with a 3.5 or above. Our grading scale is 94-100 A, 87-93 B, 80-87 C and we if we get below that we fail. I am happy to be doing the program with other people my age and I am really not sure that I could have gone to nursing school as an undergraduate - I am really glad I had some other experiences prior to this. There are many things I would change about my program, but overall I am happy I am doing it. Good luck.

Hi there, I am in an accelerated BSN program and will be graduating in December. I feel as if I am not getting much experience in my clinicals and can't believe that I will actually be out on a floor practicing in 10 months. It seems that my professors expect us to get jobs in the hospital as Care Partners to get more experience, however, I am completely overwhelmed as it is with 18 credits. I can't imagine taking 10 hours a week or more to work. Will I be at a total disadvantage if I don't work while I am a student? Thanks for any input!
