Staying fit and healthy is definitely important. I do try to keep up. Whether it's eating healthy foods or taking the 5 flights of stairs instead of the elevator. Take a dance class twice a week. I would like to start taking a strength building class too. Start small and build yourself up.
  2. If she does get compensated, I hope it's only for the amount of her medical bills/furnishing her apartment and future medical expenses (I read somewhere that her medical expenses from THR/NIH were taken care of & she didn't have to pay for anything). It doesn't surprise me that THR was not ready. With the exception of a few hospitals, the US was not prepared for Ebola. Nina needs to understand that outside of Emory & the NIH, THR was the first hospital to handle an Ebola case. They gave her the best care possible and then was sent to the NIH for further treatment. The CDC is more at fault here than THR. They're the ones who set the guidelines we have to follow. She should be going after the CDC for not prepping THR or any other hospital for Ebola. I'm pretty sure it is her lawyer, Charla Aldous, who contacted her first and not Nina. It's payday for Charla and her firm. If they do go to court and Nina wins great. If they lose, what's Nina going to do without a job? No hospital in the area would want her for fear of a lawsuit. I hope they settle this outside of court.
  3. I found out I got in on Feb. 16, the BEST Valentines gift ever! I live in Dallas uptown-downtown area, so it will definitely be quite a commute! Anyone else live in the area? I am very excited, Congrats to everyone else! Does anyone know when the deposit is due?

Did anyone use this book to study? Clinical Microbiology Made Ridiculously Simple: Mark Gladwin, William Trattler: 9781935660033: Amazon.com: Books I feel that this book is more helpful to med students as it has info that we don't even cover in class... suggestions? I'm reading the PDF version and I'm following a little better than my book since it's broken down.
  5. If I were in it for the money, I'd go to law school. Nurses make a nice a living, CRNA is better but neither is worth going in to purely for financial. What I really like about nursing is the 3 day work week (it's pretty much what sold me to nursing), I prefer to work during the day vs night, rollover vacation time, the scrubs. Flexibility is definitely the best. Doing volunteer work around the world. IMO, nursing can take you as far as you want to go.
  6. Aside from the differences in the titles, I'm assuming that the function will still be the same regardless of the degree title? I understand that by 2025 AANA wants us all to have DNPA instead of MSNA/CRNA meaning it would be more competitive than it is now. This my perfect job because of the flexibility and I can have my own practice but with the new requirements it makes it a little discouraging but I'm still up for the challenge regardless of how difficult it's going to be. Any thoughts for those who are considering this route?

So today in Micro lab, I learned about simple, acid-fast and gram stains. It all went over my head and it didn't help that I didn't pick up on it right away like the rest of my lab group. I was definitely struggling the whole time and am definitely going to have to go to open lab this week to practice on my gram stains because I have a practical on it next week. It was definitely a frustrating four hours. Any tips, hints or suggestions are welcome. I love the lecture but the lab, not so much. On a happy note, I'm doing well in the lecture and I am confident that I will do well on my first exam next week. Crossing my fingers for an A!!!!

Thanks!! I've been studying and reviewing a little bit every day so I'm hoping that will help me. I really want to get an A in this class! Cross your fingers!
  9. Mine is in 2 weeks! Microbiology!! I've been reviewing and going over notes each day.

My first test is Feb 12 - so far we're learning the History of Micro, Chemistry of Micro and the Tools of the lab. There's so much info, my plan is to read & review at least 2 hours per day just to make sure it's all sinking in! I am aiming for an A in this course!
  11. Slow & steady wins the race.

Thanks you guys!!! My class started today and my lab starts on the 28th. My professor seems to be pretty cool and I'm excited. She mentioned that there's usually 12% - 18% of her students that get A's and I plan on being in that percentage. Wish me luck and thanks again! Good luck to you all on your classes/clinicals!
  13. ICU nurse... Cardiac or Neuro ICU then hopefully the CRNA.

Thanks you guys!!! I just printed the syllabus for my Micro Lab & Lecture and it doesn't look as scary as I'm anticipating. I'm gunning for an A. I'm taking this class along with College Algebra & Intro to Professional Nursing. Since my semester is pretty light, I'm hoping for all A's! I plan on taking my HESI A2 sometime next spring & crossing my fingers I do really well in all my classes & HESI so I can get in the Nursing program the first try. My school only takes 120 out of 600. Next semester will be the real test! A&P 1 & BioChem & maybe Patho? Definitely getting nervous.

Any tips on how to handle this class? I heard it's suppose to be very difficult and I'm taking 2 other classes this semester. I'm a little nervous about this class but excited about my new career path that this is all leading to.
  16. Jealous you're going to be in your early 20s & starting your nursing career. I'll be finish with mine at 30 - this will be my second career and much better then the first! Congrats'111
  17. I'm hoping that I won't have any issues finding a job after I pass the NCLEX. I live in Dallas and there are several major hospitals by me that are less than 5 miles - Baylor, UT Southwestern, Parkland, Medical City, Children's - and then there's the Texas Health, Methodist systems. I'm just hoping that there's something in those hospitals waiting for me upon graduation. I plan on to start volunteering at one of the hospitals next spring just to kind of get my foot in the door.
  18. So after reading a few threads and seeing that there are some BSN graduates who have not found jobs after year or more out of nursing school (I've stopped reading them after a pretty bad anxiety attack), I'm worried and I am stressed out that I'm going to find myself in the same boat. I won't graduate until winter of 2015 with my BSN and I'm just really curious as to how bad the job prospects are out there for new BSN grads? What stresses me out even more is that I have a plan mapped out for my nursing career- ICU nursing for 3-5 years then apply to CRNA school- I'm just very worried that my plan isn't going to happen and I can't seem to come up with a Plan B. I've been told to stop worrying and stressing b/c things can change. Any thoughts from anyone who will be graduating around 2015-2016? Thoughts from current nurses and new grads who have landed jobs?
  19. I guess it depends on how much education you have as a nurse. ADN is good, BSN is great, Masters is better. You have have to spend a lot for all levels of education but I'd say the ROI is pretty darn good. No one goes in to nursing for the "piles" of money.
  20. You may want to contact the school and ask to speak to an adviser or someone in admissions.
  21. Really?!! Wow I didn't know that! Thank you for the heads up! Any specific ICU departments I should look in to?
  22. So I was looking at some job postings and I found the one I know I'm going to love. OR nurse for Neurosurgery. I want to do this for a few years then go to CRNA school (not sure where though). I would love, LOVE to get this job out of the gate but the reality is probably not in favor BUT it's possible. http://nursingjobs.allnurses.com/jobseeker/job/11251103/RN%20-%20Operating%20Room%20%28Neurosurgery%29%20-%20Baylor%20University%20Medical%20Center%20-%20Fulltime%20Days/Baylor%20Health/?keywords=Dallas&vnet=0&str=26&utm_medium=text&max=25&utm_source=AN&utm_campaign=nursingjobs
  23. thanks for the post and the warning!!! gahh i have 2.5 years and i'm hoping that the economic climate will change. I wonder if this varies from state to state or if this the general process for new grads? any insider tips from new grads/hires is always appreciate!
  24. I know this is a dumb question but is this the HESI A2 exam?
  25. This is encouraging! I hope I find one right away once I'm done in winter 2015! I know it's a long way but 2013 is around the corner. I'm doing everything I can esp keeping my GPA up.
