I had an experience like that a long time ago when I was new to the profession.I meet this guy who was making fun of me.He just doesn't know what a nurses job really is all about till he was in a life and death situation.I just said that we have more responsibilities more than ever.I don't really want to get into details with him during that time.He thought that nurses clean people's bottom all day and all night long.Come to think of it,a few months later on a New Years day,I was there to respond and attend to him in our small ER because of a fireworks accident.It was illegal and he knows it,I mean messing up with fireworks.He lost all his fingers and almost lost his right hand and life due to infection.He comes to the hospital daily for a painful dressing changes and a slow recovery time.Only then,he slowly realized and accepted the fact that this petite nurse whom he made fun of a couple months before was patient enough to do all his complicated daily dressing changes,can do so much more,like save his life...

The only concern about not answering a call light in a timely manner is we might miss the opportunity to an initial assessment should someone find our patient with shortness of breath and difficulty breathing or acute chest pains or worst case scenarios respiratory or cardiac arrest,or a fall situation,patient on the ground for ? time duration which resulted to fracture and brain injuries.I'm just stating the facts...

There was no incentives offered during my time in the 90's.I remembered in 2004 our hospital was offering $5 k sign on and $ 5 k referrals.My hubby can't believe I called up almost everyone on my list to apply just to get the referrals.I ended up getting nothing since the offer is only good for a limited period of time and that I was late...

And I say...The impatient ones will get nothing,patient ones will get everything...:)

Usually the security dept.responds to codes as well to clear out the room and hallways from families and visitors.I guess it differs from hospitals to hospitals...

It's really a privacy issue and with the rising cyber identity thief,hackers and spammers,it's always a risk...

Thanks Mr.Daly City RN for your comments.It's so enlightening.At first I didn't think of it that way but as I kept on reading your post,I finally realized the important point I'm missing.All I kept thinking is the last part of your post,the affordability of retiring there rather than here....

Nursing is such a multi tasking profession which most of us don't mind as long as our patients remain safe,we know our limits and the hospital policy allow us to do so.It's amazing what a nurse can do to keep the unit run smoothly.On top of being a staff or charge nurse we also assume the roles of being barbers,waitress,phlebotomist,transporter,housekeeping/environmental services,engineer,mathematician,counselor,teacher,clerk,troubleshooter and much more.That's what nursing is all about.It's gratifying,rewarding and a dignified profession knowing that we helped a lot of people and unique in it's own special way...:)

My quote..."Really,don't bribe me"...:) This is really what it meant...The above comment was just in "my head,kept to myself ",and I really appreciated and thanked her for that.I was never mean to a preceptee.I did the very best to my ability to help them get through the whole orientation process,taught them what they need to learn about the job and the importance of doing things right the proper way it should be done.I want everyone to be successful under my preceptorship.I know how the whole process can be so intimidating,scary and stressful for a new nurse,a totally whole new environment,doctors,administration,patients,tons of paperworks,computer charting,manuals,policies and procedures,the list goes on and an impatient intimidating preceptor.I went through all that whole experience and it wasn't fun at all.Thanks for reading...Before I forget,one last thing,it's true,I can't be bribed...

Thank you for your comment and links...It was a solemn memorial service in church today.Most day shift nurses were there,a few evenings and night shift,her family and friends.So nice to see old co workers,it's just like a mini reunion.It's really sad to say,that it's one of our co worker's funeral.She'll me missed.May her soul rest in peace..

While doing preceptor on a new nurse she said to me."I really want to be like you when I'm done with orientation.It's an honor to follow your footsteps."...Really,don't bribe me...:)

Such an emotional time.It's a friend's funeral tomorrow.She wasn't just a friend but also a co worker,a fellow nurse who I worked with for so many years.Rest in peace....Events like this triggered a lot of memories.Although I've been a nurse for many years,death and dying is still a difficult issue for me to talk about especially when it involves family member,or friend or patients either from illness,natural causes and tragic events.I would think as a nurse,I should have been more prepared to deal with issues like this on a professional level and have a much better understanding of death as a part of the circle of life.On a personal level,I might haven't fully recovered and come to terms over the loss of some family members,friends and some patients close to me over an 8 yr.period.I haven't had the chance to completely mourn each one of them. Furthermore,I asked some professional help which is difficult for me to do but I did it anyway and finding ways to educate myself.I know,I'm not alone.Thanks for taking the time to read.Have a blessed Sunday..

Feeling guilty is a normal reaction.In my opinion,I will feel more guilty if I come to work sick and spreading the flu virus to my co workers,staff and most especially the vulnerable patients...
