  1. We had a care dot com sitter who came in the mornings when the kids were little. We are in a similar situation, both parents on shift work, sometimes opposite shifts with little kids and no family in the area. It's hard, but workable. I am sure the sitters aren't all as awesome as ours, but there must be other good ones out there! Good luck :)
  2. Worst. Nightmare. Wishing you the best.
  3. Do you have to be at this hospital? You have a few years experience, look around...the grass may be greener elsewhere. Otherwise I would say exactly that....Night shift and I are NOT compatible, I need to switch to days or I am going to leave (in a non threatening manner of course). It's one thing to be bratty after 2 months, but to ask nicely, with good reason, after having paid your dues....It's a matter of quality of life, by all means start finding a place where you will be happy. jmho :)
  4. I am a new nurse too, and didn't feel confident with them either. My preceptor said pull up a chair, get comfortable, calm down and take your time. I haven't missed since! I think there was some mental block that it was an unattainable skill...
  5. I would! I would also state exactly what they did....tell your prospective employer that a 30 patient load is just TOO much! I don't think that's quite a fair assessment of your abilities, and they should appreciate your honesty.
  6. Agree. I won't make 70k this year as an RN.
  7. Maybe I should add something useful: I work in the treasure coast area and we DO have lpn's on our acute care floor (PCU) so hospital jobs are out there. How frequently this occurs idk. I wish I could help you out with pay but I have no idea GOOD LUCK!
  8. LOLOL! Horrible, but seems to be true....
  9. I seriously worry about the judgment of these students now, once they are nurses.....it just plain scares me. I cannot fathom the thought process involved in selecting an outfit like that in a professional setting.
  10. LOL! Yes. But I may not have anything helpful to say. 10 days after I graduated I got ATT, and 14 days was the Friday that I took it. I did the online Hurst review for about 36 hours before the test and nothing else. I was kinda a freak during school though and studied about 12 hours a day for the entire 2 years. By the time we were done I was so freaking burnt out! I can say that my classmates did the live Hurst and highly recommended it! I kinda felt jipped with the test since I focused so much on patho and pharma, they were my babies, and I didn't get to prove my awesomeness on that darn test!
  11. Ha! Ask me for tips if I pass. I am completely convinced otherwise lol
  12. Took the beast, NCLEX-RN, Friday, 10/26 and have heard NOTHING. Had 75 questions and the good popup. While I am trying to stay positive as the hours go by I am losing my freaking mind! Ahhhhhhhhh!
  13. They are mean, insecure and jealous! Uugh. Glad to be done with it.
  14. Magnet hospital? No idea. They do prefer BSN, so I hear. I am in Vero, so that was never a choice for me. The local HCA hospitals will hire new nurses though...In fact I just finished the program and got in there :) Woot!
  15. Just a point of interest, I believe they do not hire new nurses...so if you are wanting an 'in' after nursing school, this may not be the place for you.
  16. I abuse mine terribly. One place not to leave it: blazing hot car in Florida hung on rearview mirror lol....now it has a kink.
  17. Where I live, completion of a nursing fundamentals course = CNA certification. This may be different for you, I don't know, and I certainly wasn't trying to be mean. However I do believe that the knowledge you have being a nursing student is waaaaaaaaaaaay more than someone who took a weekend CNA course and therefore you are more than qualified for that type of assignment. It doesn't sound clinically *heavy* to take care of one incontinent patient. You state yourself that you CAN do this job, so it's up to you to determine what it's worth. Wages in this area, you would probably make in the $8-9/hour range for this type of work.
  18. I am not asking you to share, but I am wondering what you think CNA's make? I am knee deep in every body fluid you can think of for up to 24 patients for 12.5 hours a day and I can tell you I don't believe my pay, being a few dollars above minimum wage can come near to appropriate compensation. For a dollar or 2 less, I would love a job like yours Also, if you have been through fundamentals, you should have as much training as someone with a CNA cert.
  19. I use a lapel watch also, and hook it in my pocket. I can't stand having a watch on, and then with all the washing! Ugh. My skin gets so irritated underneath because it never gets truly dry under there. I second the infection risk sentiment too! I am surprised hospitals allow this....
  20. I went through every possible shoe I could find, my husband said I spent over 1200$ in shoes...lol idk if that's true, but I believe it. The most comfortable awesome amazing clouds of delight for my feet are Brooks. I am currently wearing glycerin 10's. They run about $140 but are worth every penny. Even after 4, 12 hour shifts in a row I feel tired, yes, but I don't come home limping anymore.
  21. Yup. Everything you said, x2. Lol. Me being naive I walked into this situation with all my lovely nursing school experience (read NONE) and spent my first few shifts crying. I'm surprised they didn't fire me. It's not that common to have so many, but it happens. We are understaffed and they aren't turning patients away because of it...so here we are. I am only 6 weeks away from being done with NS and it took me 2 years to get a job at this hospital. I am promised a job at the end or else I would have hightailed it outta here after the first day.
  22. 12 would be a slow day where I work, sometimes I have up to 24ish more or less. And many are confused, fall risks, you can easily have 10+ complete cares....
