Worried about my nursing supplies!?
Just ignore them and don't deny yourself the use of good equipment just to make someone else feel better. Their stuff may be fine, or they may have to double back and buy again if they aren't getting good results. Not your problem. If they could they would buy expensive things too. I know it hurts to have people be ugly to you, but just be nice and people will come around. Or they won't, and that's fine. You're there to learn, not make friends. Just be the bigger person. And no, I don't think your professors will hate you. Good luck and chin up!

Questions about supplies
Unless you have gotten information from your school about their requirements, I would wait to buy anything other than your basic school supplies. They may have a certain type they want you to buy or some schools provide a lab kit with some of your nursing supplies in it.

Advice for a pre nursing student?
A&P I for me was a lot of memorization (mostly anatomy). Flash cards and printing off diagrams to label were my best study tools. My best advice for starting college is to enjoy the new social life and friends that comes with it. However, make your studies top priority. A lot of people ( including me) have trouble balancing the two at first and that's okay. Take good notes, get a good night sleep before tests and study a little everyday. Good luck! Even when you're working hard, college is a lot of fun.

Book you can't live without.
Thanks all! I will keep these in mind when shopping for materials!

Last Free Weekend
This is my last free week! Like everyone else, I plan to clean and organize. When my financial aid comes through, I will shop books and supplies. I need to freeze crock pot meals, but we will see if that happens. Maybe I can get to the lake one last time!

Book you can't live without.
Just curious, what non-textbook have you relied on most during NS? I don't want to jump the gun and buy anything I don't need, but want to start window shopping. Sorry if this is a repeat post. Thanks guys.

Which Specialty?
I'm staying open until I have done some clinicals and worked as a CNA. All of the nurses I know say that what you think you want to do usually changes.

Not impressed and depressed
I know that this will sound mean, and I'm sorry. My first impression of you from the OP is that you have a chip on your shoulder and that won't get you anywhere. Be positive and let your work speak for you. As my mother says, "not everyone has to like you." With school as well as work, you may not be everyone's favorite, but if you work hard and are easy to work with, most people will respect you. If you truly want to be a nurse, more than anything else, why should anyone stop you?
-
People really do ask you for medical advice! Wow...
Has anyone else gotten "when you're a nurse I will be calling you in the middle of the night when my kid's sick" Hahaha, so funny. But seriously, don't call me.
-
Why should we pick you?
I had that question. Here is pretty much what I said: "When I decided to come back to school to be a nurse, I put my heart and soul into that goal. Since starting my pre-reqs I have worked hard and raised my GPA from a 2.5 to a 3.6. I can honestly say that I have never worked so hard for anything in my life because I want to be a nurse and I know that I will one day. I really would like to be a part of your program, but if I'm not, that's okay because I know that I will find a way to reach my goal." All true. No reason to try to make anything up, just find a way to get your point across well.

I start nursing school tomorrow!
Yay! Good luck!

How are you preparing?
I've been organizing my office so that everything is at hand. I started this weeks ago, but for some reason everyone and their mother has decided to come visit this summer, so I hope I get done before school starts. My husband is awesome about doing house work, but he can't cook. So I've been getting recipes together for the crock pot or easy for him to make when I can't. I'm learning to say no to social events. I still will make a point to meet friends for dinner, etc, but I just can't worry about hurting people's feelings if it doesn't work for me.

People really do ask you for medical advice! Wow...
Haha, I haven't even started nursing school and I get this kind of stuff all the time. I was meeting friends to go on a road trip and the first thing my friend said to me, at 7am, was, "I have blood in my stool, should I be worried?" Nice to see you too! I even get billing questions and questions about medical mysteries that people see on TV. Then they act like I'm dumb because I don't have an answer. Hello!?!

Is dating or flirting with an another nurse or patient is acceptable?
If you want to know how to keep your name clean, in any job, go to work and do your job! Don't worry about social stuff. The patient thing seems like a no-brainer to me. Socializing with coworkers (and I mean non-dating socializing), that will probably be up to you. But take caution! If you want to go to the club with coworkers, just know that there will be a chance that everyone at work will know what happened the next day. I don't hang out with coworkers as a general rule. I have had a few exceptions, but these were people that I had a good connection with and I usually didn't hang out with them until we had worked together for some time.

To all the students about to start nursing school...
Thanks! Like another poster said, I might have to revisit this in a few months as a reminder! Good luck on your boards!

Woot! I graduated from Nursing School!!!!
Congratulations!!! Try to relax and do a bunch of selfish, indulgent stuff for a few days, then start studying.

New nursing student, what should I expect from my classes?
So, I've been really focused on getting into nursing school and getting my CNA certification, but I haven't really thought to get any feedback on what to expect from my upcoming classes. My first semester is light. I will be taking Pathophysiology, Gerontology, Health Assessment (and lab), and Professionalism in Nursing. I know what these classes are, I just wondered what you all thought of them. Did you love them, hate them? Which did you find hard, which easy, etc. One of the advisers told me that Prof. in Nursing was a lot of projects, what kind of projects? Thanks for any info! I'm actually not really nervous, yet! I'm just kind of excited to get going. Our school has the books packaged, so I can't find out what books I will use yet, or I would have already started looking them over to get an idea.

What are you going to miss the most...
The rest I can live without, but the reading, I'll miss that! I panicked the other day because I didn't feel like I had read enough this summer. Now I'm calculating how many books I could fit in before the 25th. Probably 19 romance novels or 5 good novels. Or if I mix it up, 2 good novels and 11.4 romance novels! That's a lot of romance. Maybe 4 good and 3.8 romance.

Organization for Nursing School
It's already been said, but I'll say it again, you have to find what works best for you. I am starting my nursing classes in the fall as well, but I have developed my organization and note-taking during my pre-nursing classes. Hopefully I will just have to tweak a bit here and there for nursing school. Here is what I do: -I keep one big binder with pocket dividers and one big notebook where I take all of my notes (for me, I can't have multiple folders and notebooks because I will end up forgetting something. It's easier for me to have the least amount of stuff to keep up with.) -Because I keep one notebook I label and date every page of notes. My notes are well organized, to the point and written in outline form IN CLASS. Otherwise, I won't have a clue what I was supposed to take away from the class. -At the end of each day I take my notes from that day along with any handouts and ppts for that material and put them in my binder under the correct divider, chronologically. -I do use highlighters, but each color means something. (i.e. yellow= things I want to put on note cards, pink= things that I want to look up or get a better understanding of, etc.) -If you learn well with note cards get a note card filing box (or one for each class). I'm a big card person, but my note card collection can get a bit out of hand if they don't have a home. -I have one calendar for everything (work, school, social). My system isn't rocket surgery, but it works for me and I always know where all of my stuff is (except for the occasional note card stack that finds its way under my car seat). I hope that helps. Good luck!

Almost done w/ pre reqs.. question!
Research what schools you want to attend and double check their requirements. My school has a nursing adviser, if your school of choice have one, set an appointment with them. I met with my adviser every semester before I chose my classes for the following semester, just to make sure I was on track. If a school requires an interview, start looking online for common interview questions. Most important, GPA! Make sure you are giving 100% in all of your pre-reqs. And don't dump the info once the class is over because you will need it for you entrance exam! Finally, don't be afraid to ask questions of everyone and anyone. The staff is there to help you, so take Advantage of that. Good luck!

Fall 2012 Jitters!
I'm mostly excited, but nervous too. I haven't had a job all summer and am trying to get a CNA job right now. I think that if I can work I won't think about school so much. Tomorrow I send all of my info to Accusource, then nothing until orientation on Aug 23rd. Longest summer ever. Good luck to everyone!

Prenursing student--confused?? What are my options?
I am not totally sure, and I'm sure others on the site are more knowledgeable, but I looked up the RN-MSN programs at some of my local schools and they require you to have had a certain amount of pre-reqs in addition to your nursing classes (English, humanities, etc.). I would suggest that you call some of the schools in your area and speak with the Advising Dept. to find out what they would require. Good luck!

First day of CNA class......
I started Monday too! I feel like a deer in the headlights from all of the information. My class is on a rotating schedule so some of the students have been there for up to four weeks. That's the most intimidating part. But they have a good pass rate, so I think I'm in good hands. How are the CNA jobs in everyone's area? My instructor is talking like the pickings are slim here in Nashville.

Fall 2012 new nursing students roll call!!!
Hello! I'm starting in the fall too! Right now I am finishing my last semester of prerequisites. Over the summer I have to do my BLS cert, get my physical. I also plan to get my CNA cert so that maybe I can work some during school. Other than that I plan to read for fun and play guitar all summer before things get nuts. Oh and freeze a bunch of meals before school starts, so the family doesn't starve. Congrats to everyone!

Should I become a CNA while doing prerequisites?
If it can pay the bills, yes. It will prepare you for working with patients. Also, many nurses you work with are happy to teach you and help you understand things you are studying in a practical way.
