I just started a job on a trauma unit at a level 1 trauma center (not ICU/ED) after working for 2 years as a med/surg nurse. I would love to brush up on skills and learn some more about the types of patients a trauma nurse would get. Does anyone have any recommendations for books/pocket guides that I could study? Thanks!

I'm a new RN. Just graduated in May and started my first job on a med/surg floor in July. I have been off orientation for a little over 3 months and jeez I feel like I'm getting called into the managers office because of a mistake I made all the time. In reality, it was 3 times but still, it feels like a lot. These mistakes didnt harm the patients but they are still things I missed and I am feeling discouraged and stressed out. For example, one was because I missed a wound on a patient (several nurses missed it), another was because I hadn't documented a PCA correctly. I could use some encouragement. Did this happen to anyone else when they were a new graduate RN?

Thanks for the reply! The current program I'm admitted in for RN-BSN has me taking only BSN nursing classes as I was able to transfer and appeal all the remaining classes. I hope WGU does the same.

Would someone mind explaining the admission process? I am currently admitted to an online RN-BSN program that will take me 1.5 years with a Sep start date, but the length of time you can finish at WGU is definitely appealing! I'm just concerned about transferring my classes from when I graduated with my Bachelor's in 2010. Can my transcripts be reviewed prior to applying for admission to the college? The enrollment counselor hasn't responded to my e-mail yet so allnurses.com is the next best thing!

I've been using Saunders and am contemplating buying UWorld as well. I like their rationales. I just took another practice Q-Bank test and got a 59% on it last night...so I'm not sure what's going on lol...I think I just need to practice more.

I just took the Kaplan course 2 weeks ago and am scheduled to take my NCLEX last week of June. I've been taking q-bank tests and have been consistently getting 45%-55%. I am feeling SO discouraged and don't feel confident at ALL. Has anyone passed their boards with Kaplan scores like this?

A bunch of my classmates, myself included, got this clipfolio from Target for clinicals. Its got a removable slip for legal pads inside, a folder area,and has a clipboad on front. North Hennepin has an evening/weekend option for the nursing program. Its a part of the MANE system. So if you get into NHCC's nursing program, you're automatically admitted to Metro State to continue on to get your BSN. If you go straight through, you can complete the BSN in 3 years. Does anybody know anything about these programs? Are they hard to get into? Is it a lot of work? Are there still on site clinicals required? Any info about these 2 programs would be much appreciated! We did the first half of our clinicals at an independent living facility. Then after spring break, our second half was spent at a TCU. Next semester we're going to long term care/rehab/hospice.

This is a great idea. My nursing class made a Facebook page and its great for asking questions and planning get togethers. As for your other questions, I didn't bring my textbook to the first day. I didn't think we needed it and we didn't. It is HUGE so I wasn't lugging that thing around all day. Definitely would bring your planner though. First day of class I sat there and transferred all the assignment due dates and test dates. I think its REALLY important to make good friends in class. I was lucky and my whole class is very close. We really relied on each other during the semester. Nothing is better than being assigned a group project and actually ENJOYING the work because you know you can count on the other members.

I'm in the NHCC program right now. I think its possible to do it while working but no more than 10-15 hours a week MAX. A lot of my classmates had to cut back on hours once they realized how intense it is.

I started school printing out all the powerpoints and it ends up being SO much paper. I eventually changed and just brought in my laptop to view and take notes in Powerpoint. Its much easier :)

When I started nursing school last semester, my full time job let me go to on call and I worked 1-2 weekend a month. Then I picked up back to full time during the summer. Its worked out really well for me.

I don't go to ARCC but I do go to a MANE school and we needed: Stethoscope (I got a Littmann Classic SE on Amazon for $20 cheaper than what the school offered) Bandage scissors (Amazon) Wrist watch with a sweeping second hand (Amazon...see a pattern here?) Penlights (I got a 6 pack for like, $5 on Amazon) That's all I can remember to be honest.

I'm planning on taking my NCLEX next summer but I want to get a head start. I'm looking to buy some NCLEX review books but wow are some of them expensive. Are there any huge differences if I were to buy one edition earlier than the latest? For example, buying the 2010 version of the Saunders Comprehensive review as opposed to the newest 2013 one? I'm planning on getting the Saunders review and Kaplan review, but if anyone else has some recommendations, please let me know!

I was accepted into NHCC and IHCC with an 11.4. I've heard of people being accepted into MANE with scores in the 10's though. Good luck!

While I'm not sure about how things work at that particular college, I know that I've seen a lot of people get into nursing school after being waitlisted. I even heard that a school by me had completely gone through their waitlisted applicants and were calling non-waitlisted applicants and offering them admission. #6 isn't that bad at all. Don't lose hope!

Congratulations! I'm finishing up my first semester of nursing school next month so I know all too well what you're about to go through. Be be prepared for A LOT of work. Make sure your family/job/friends are aware of what you're going to be going through. Hopefully they'll be understanding. Make friends in class. I'm amazed at how quickly my class has bonded. You're definitely going to need their support. Make a good impression to your teachers. Don't be upset if you're not getting straight A's; nursing school is a whole other ballgame. Don't be upset if you feel like breaking down. We've all been there. You just need to pick yourself back up. And most importantly. Don't give up!! You may want to in the beginning because of all the stress and work but it's all SO worth it.

Sorry I should've explained more in my question. I'm a nursing student and I was discussing this situation with friends and we disagreed on whether it'd be a violation. Say a nursing student says to another person who does not know where she does clinical, "I worked on a patient in clinical who was admitted for SOB. They were discharged to a TCU for PT". No names mentioned, just the situation of why they were admitted. What do you guys think?There's no names or distinguishing factors mentioned. I compared it to when our teachers mention previous experience in class regarding patients they've worked on in the past; no mention of where they worked or distinguishing factors of the patients.
