  1. Yes Nightingale is a noooooooo..lol. I encountered 4 nurses down here and they said run like hell. Yes, they tend to put you in extended stays.
  2. I wouldnt say anything either...just wait it out and see..
  3. plus self extubation occur with or without the covers. Sedation is definitely our friends with a fiesty little itty bitties.
  4. We also utilize giraffe homemade isolette covers in our level 3 NICU 36 beds. It is crucial in developmental care. All the concerns you u identified are valid. Even if you r entering a new facility with private rooms there will still be the other noise contributors and nonetheless...lighting. I sleep so much better when its pitch dark. I can imagine the itty bitties will fair better to remain in a simulated environment to the womb as similar as possible.
  5. same here...we have this touch screen laptop on a cart with wheels that parents watch the videos at the bedside. Plus it keep tabs on each patients parent who receive the educational info. I'll find out more on what this system is called. So much better than having to roll that big ol' tv and having to rewind all 3 vhs tapes.
  6. Its sad that he lost both his wife and son due to two separate causes. But his son's death could have been prevented for sure...sad.
  7. CONGRATS!!! You're going to have an awesome time at Frontier Bound. It felt like it was years ago since I was there and its literally has been exactly one month. Again enjoy your time there, Hyden is great place to reflect before you began your journey. I really felt like I was away from the world so to speak, I guess I'm speaking from my urban living regarding a very rural mountainous region. Again CONGRATS!!!
  8. Hey nsjbm, Send your email to my pm and I think I can correspond more in detail this way.-Lunise:)
  9. Thats one of the main reasons I chose Frontier because the program equips you with the necessary skills and tool to becoming an independent provider and opening up your own birthing center which is my ultimate goal:)
  10. Hello Goozgog, I too plan on obtaining my FNP after completing the CNM program. I was advised that it was better to do it this way because if you do it the other way around you're paying more to retake women's health related classes. As in the CNM goes more in depth so it would cover that portion of the FNP program. I do not not have L&D experience either but my passion is midwifery and I feel that it fully compensates. Plus I really dont plan on working in a Hospital setting.:)
  11. I agree not one school can fit every ones agenda. I tend to look into the school's mission and philosophy and it so happened that Frontier fit mines perfectly. At first I was kind of reluctant in having to make two trips but than I realized its ONLY two trips. Plus the Frontier Bound allowed me to meet my classmates, bond, learn about the rich history of the school, and it was great to recieve attentive encouragement. I'm glad you found a program other than Frontier that fits your goals and that you can share your experience with others who are interested in U of C:)
  12. Actually its great if you already have a preceptor in my mind as far as Frontier. But while I was at Frontier bound they gave each of a list of potential sites where previous Frontier students have done their clinicals. Base on your geographic locations some were shorter or longer than others. Like I had 5 possible sites to look into. And some have to do investigation or relocating for a couple of months and bang out the clinical requirements.
  13. Hey Jen, Congrats in completing your application. I just got back home from Frontier Bound and I am glad I chose this school and you will too. As for me I was emailed and directed to schedule a phone interview. Good Luck!
  14. :yelclap::w00t::anpom:CONGRATULATIONS Epiphany! hopefully to be in ur shoes in two years:)
  15. Nurse-Midwives, Women's Health Nurse Practitioner, and Family Nurse Practioner programs.
  16. Hey Kitchenluvr, I went thru the same questions you had. But, I concluded that successfully completing a distance education will only demonstrate positive profesional skills of being a self-starter, independent, ability to locate resources, and much more. Plus I inquired about my chosen school in the midwifery world and every midwife I encountered recognized it with positive notes. Two key words: very reputable. I could only tell u from my experience with Frontier. I just recently got accepted, orientation isnt for another month but already I feel the support from this program. They really got their stuff together. I have access to certain classes and able to look at their syllabus. Plus their clinical requirements are double the minimum of what ACNM recommends which translates to a more experience provider. I would definitely recommend Frontier. I did research on other distance schools and couldnt find much as far as reviews. Plus I chose distance for the flexibility and the cost. B/c the program near me cost $15000 a semester equated to unneccessary debt.:) Hope this was somewhat helpful.
  17. Hey Christine! As the day approaches I'm getting even more excited. Cant wait to meet you along with our other classmates:)
  18. Yeaaaaahhh! I got my acceptance email today also. I'll be starting this summer, will be going to Frontier Bound Class 61. I am so psyched!!! Looking forward to getting started on my long awaited journey to midwifery. CNM2B, Sorry to hear about your daughter will put her in my prayer. And congrats!
  19. LUNISE replied to sofiam's topic in NICU, Neonatal
We have one that can be in for a month I think. But the one we frequently use is every 72 hrs. I've inserted 3 already and have been on the floor for 5 days.:)
  20. Hello NICU GODDESSES, okay back on topic....Just wanted to introduce myself. Join this site when I was taking my pre-req's and applying for a second accelerated degree program. Graduated this past september from intense 11 mos of hell(wow it seems so long ago but it was just 4 mos) and started working in a level III nicu in the begininng of this month. I've been on the floor for 5 days so far and clearly am a newbie. I LOVE it! My preceptor is awesome and a great teacher. I believe I made a great decision. Now when I read the convos on the board it starts to make more sense b/c I can picture it in my head, like the difference between a Giraffe bed and an older servo incubator, the med terminology and lingo, etc. So I cant wait to become more active in this forum. HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE!!!:):balloons:
  21. I myself have searched for anyone who's currently or a past graduate of their midwifery program but I've come up with nothing. I even emailed an individual 3-4mos ago who I believe stated that they were in the program and didnt get any response. She's probably very occupied. Until then keeping my fingers crossed. I really wish this forum was a bit more active. I guess I'll begin with myself and post more.
  22. I agree w/ piper it's doable. Would I do it all over again? Actually yes. I'll have my degree in 9 days after just 11 mos. Would I recommend this program? Yes but will caution that you have to be able to handle stressful situations and roll with the flow. Do I feel confident after completing the ACE program? Yes and after making it thru this program I feel I can accomplish anything I set my mind to. Just know before beginning that you set your mind to sacrificing a year. Plus I did not study all day and night. I actually think I had a lot of free time when I think about it. You can do it! I believe you yourself can make it more stressful than it really is. So just relax and put in crunch time when you need to.
  23. Just wanted to put in that the bright white lab coat (which it seems people always mistake me to be a doctor, lol, always had to correct) by midway thru second quarter will be in your house in the lost and found pile. After a while it made me hot and at times got in the way. Just my 2 cents. Its a great souvenir though.:)
  24. Ling07- And the answer is......Busy as Hell...:)Its working, currently in the 3rd quater. We lost alot of people in the 2nd quater, which is known as the weeding out quater. I just studied my ass off so I wouldnt fall into the statistics. Anyhoo, off to sleep for clinicals tomorrow.
  25. They do provisionally acceptance meaning you have to complete the pre-reqs before the first day of school.
