  1. When I had gone to school, Alexandria Tech's course was a 1 year program. (10.5 months to be exact)
  2. My favorite snack on the run are Luna Bars. Nuts over chocolate are my favorite. They are packed with protein and are made from soy nuts. They ususally get me through the day.

I have been working in peds for almost 2 years...and I still get sick. Like you said, even with wearing gloves, and hand washing, you still catch those little bugs. I did come to the conclusion that I don't get sick as often if I wash my hands rather than using an alcohol based hand wash, and to take off my uniform and wash it right away when I get home. Well...maybe it is in my head too, or maybe I have just built up my immunity...
  4. I had worked with a few alzheimer's patients that would get very out of hand also. Again, family refused to have any medication administered. The nurse that I had worked with would call the family members and have them come in to see if they could calm the patient down. Sometimes it worked, but sometimes not. Eventually, after the family had been called very frequently, and saw the behaviors (that they didn't beleive in the first place), they finally agreed to the use of prn meds.
  5. I recently had root scaling and planing done on my top and bottom molars on both sides. I received novocaine in each area. I have a very low pain tolerance, but the procedure didn't seem to bother me as much as I thaught it would. My gums were a little swollen and tender, but didn't seem to bother me for more than a day. Good luck. You will be fine
  6. I try not to because like above, I don't want to be treated any differently. I know that I too get very nervous when I am working with a nurse or MD. The only downfall, is that I have worked with many of the nurses that I see at the clinic from programs through our system.
  7. I work in a pediatric clinic, and I too, cannot stand the smell/sight of vomit. One day our NP walked out of a room after seeing a young boy and she told me that he had vomitted all over the floor and that it would need to be cleaned up. Ok so I sucked it up, gown...gloves...double mask....and cleaned it. I made it through. The very next week, I was sitting at my desk, and I heard a mother ask her young son, "Are you going to throw up?" Without even thinking, I grabbed my garbage by my desk and ran over to the child who was about to vomit. I got the garbage in front of the child right in the nick of time...thank goodness. Cleaning it once is enough for me to prevent it if I can!!
  8. My hands too, crack and bleed nearly every week. There are only two lotions that I have found that help at all. The one, I only used once and was my father's...it was shipped in from Germany. I had never heard of it before, but after using it for 2 days, my hands were 100% better. The other lotion which I do use regularly is Avon's Moisture Therapy Hand Cream (Intensive). It's a thicker lotion, but it works wonders. The tube lasts for ever and is only about 3-5 dollars per tube. That would be my recommendation.
  9. I work in Pediatrics, but in a clinic setting. It is great, because I do have the time to spend with my patients. At times, of course, it does get busy, but alot of times, I have time to sit and color with them, or play with the blocks we have too. One of the most rewarding things that I have come across, was the kids will remember your name next time they come in!! When I had a 2 and 3 year olds coming back and saying hello to me, by name, and being excited to see me has been very rewarding. I love working in peds.
  10. Nay. We tried "team nursing" in our clinic when it opened. Needless to say, it lasted about 4 weeks. The managers decided to keep the "team" happy by going back to 1 on 1 nursing, rather than loosing all of the nursing staff. We felt that too many things were being missed and no one would take responsibility for any of the MD's afterwork. There were just too many hands in the cookie jar as all of the nurses agreed to. We are back to 1 on 1 nursing and enjoying our jobs again.
  11. In the clinic situation that I work in, we had been receiving a one hour lunch break, which included lunch, and the two breaks for the 8 hour shift. We had combined 2 clinics and got new supervisors who decided that lunch time would be alloted 45 minutes, and a 15 minute break "only if the job demands it". I feel like the new admins want us to work more...We never get our "break". I know how it feels.
  12. The company that I work for offered and gave the vaccine to all of the employees that wanted it last week. Now yesterday, a bulletin came out from the state stating that we (health care workers) are not considered high risk. The unfortunate thing now is all of that vaccine has been used and not technically used on the high-risk patients.
