  1. I don't post often ,but I do check in a lot to read the posts. I will be moving to Adelaide in Feb. :balloons: I want to thank the Aussie nurses for all the help and advice I have obtained here. (esp. Grace , Gwenith and Talaxandra) Wishing all Happy Holidays. Bill
  2. I have worked with nurses from Australia , NZ, and the UK. They had to have psych. before working. I seem to recall that there are programs out there to help become qualified. I am going to Australia and it took about a year to get all in order. Ironically I am a psychiatric nurse ,and I will need to have additional training in Australia to qualify as a Mental Health Nurse.:chuckle Go for it, I think the hardest part is navigating the system. Nurses are needed everywhere, and I'm sure you will be welcome. Good Luck Bill
  3. Well if I ever need to have this done I want to go to your hospital :roll Bill
  4. Thanks for the tips that is good info I have Micromedex at work. I will check if they have they International info available. Talaxandra- I'm sure we will visit Victoria often. To cool and wet for me to live there I would have opted for QLD ( gwenith ) . My wife wants to have cooler weather We have been in a warm climate for 14 years. Now it's time for a change I suppose it's is her turn:chuckle Bill
  5. I will be moving to S.A. from Hawaii at the end of the year. What Australian med guide would be best to get now? I will need to learn the different meds used compared to the USA. Are there nursing drug refrence books for Ausrtalia? Any help greatly appreciated Bill
  6. We are going to go to S.A. I was able to get an independant visa so we can move about the country if we want to Bill
  7. It took a long time, but I finaly have everything I need to migrate.:w00t: I just got the good news yesterday. Our plan is to move after Christmas. I want to get to Australia in Summer when it's warm. It's been a long time since I lived with cool weather, and I'll put off dealing with cool weather again :chuckle. I'm sure I'll be on asking more questions. I just had to tell someone/everyone our good Bill
  8. I have made a niche for myself as a nurse and I can teach. I took over the patient education for my work area. I have been able to start nurse led groups for patients. We have begun to emphasise a stop with the nurse educator for the patients before they leave.
  9. Just think about how your humor affects a patint and you will be ok. Humor can be a great tool to help patients. Sometimes a sense of humor is what gets you through the day too:chuckle
  10. That's one of the reasons we moved to Hawaii 14 years ago. No more Winter Blues!! Still the USA (and half way to Oz :))
  11. A friend of mine took care of Andre the Giant. A huge man (pro wrestler) I think he was 7'4" and 400-500 lbs. She was 4'11'' and maybe 110. She was his very favorite nurse. He liked her because of her skills and her ability to help him laugh when he felt I'll. Unless you are on the psych take down unit size shouldn't matter
  12. Acute Adult Psych for the last twelve years Oncology and Acute Dialysis before that
  13. The patient should be respected as a person. I am male and I ask if I am to be in a room with a patient. In twenty years I have only had one person refuse. I would not want to have anyone in the room when I get an exam if I did not know who they were. I have had med students and nursing students care for me . I would have been angry if I had not been asked. When I was a student nurse the women I cared for in my OB/GYN rotation were pleased to see a male interested in caring for them as a nurse. The first woman I cared for was someone I had known socialy (small town) and she was ok with me. I imagine if I had walked in and started to care for her without asking she would have been very uncomfortable. I will remind my patients that they have the right to know who is caring for them and why. They have the right to say no and it should be honored.
  14. Good news- I have been issued my General RN by SA I am still waiting for a reply from DIMA , but I will take this as a good omen I hope to be celebrating Christmas down under this year Time to start reviewing Australian medications ....LOL
  15. hey!! aussie nurses happy australia day!!
