Nursing Pay Question?
Here's the key.... Where you live....High cost of living area or not so much. What hospital....Duke vs UNC health care For example...or University vs community...Single hospital or hospital system What kind of Nursing.... Psych, Med-Surg, ER or ICU Hours and Days....Nights VS Days, during the week or on weekends When I started I got... As a new grad (in 2012) it was $21.00/hr $4 shift diff and 25% for weekends. I have since been offered other jobs with diffrent pay rates. I got offered a job at New Hanover Regional in Willimington, NC It would have been a $5 hr pay cut from the above pay, for a much more expensive place to live. Then I got offered a job at Duke same day as UNC $4 hr difference and better shift diffrentials. I now make $24.68Hr, $5 hr for nights and $10hr for weekends. SO... basically tonight Sunday I'm making $39.68 an hour. But you may want to look up the salary survey on this sight.... It come down would you work nights? weekends? overtime? and what areas and locations?

Do Male Nurses Get More Respect?
For personnal experience YES! I remember being a patient, the male doctors were way ruder to female nurses. I had dressing changes that need to be done. I had asked if I could the time changed. I was told it was fine. Well, the doctor came and was upset that it had not been done. I explained that I asked for the time to be changed. Boy was he mad and ready to yell. Boy did that attitude flip when the MALE nurse walked in. Unfortunatly, I saw that behavior more than once. My theory then was, "I can't yell at this guy, he may punch me".

"New grad" rn with dreams of psych
I just wanted to add... Please for the love of god stop working for free. It makes it harder to find a job for yourself and everyone else. Go to a nursing home and work there, you will see a lot of psych there. Gero psych is often over looked.

"New grad" rn with dreams of psych
Not sure where you live.. but here in NC it's pretty easy to get a psych job. Most hositals want experience. That said how do you get it??? Go into a state job, think state psych hospitals. A year and any hospital will hire you. The alterantive is go to a small hospital and work in psych there. That was how I got my start. But after I got that job every state psych job I applied for called some 3 times even after I told them I had a job. Is moving for a year to another state an option? Do you just want a RN job? That would be the fastest way to get one then you could go back and try to get into psych by way of a transfer.

Can anyone recommend a Good Study Guide for the Psychiatric Nursing Certification?
A good study guide or guides as the case may be, for taking and getting, the Psychiatric Nursing Certification. I would like to take this soon. But don't want to just randomly buy study guides off of Amazon. As they are so pricey. I was hoping someone who have some suggestions. Thanks!!!

Do you know your patients?
As everyone else has said time is key. I try to learn about 2 patients per shift. Key diagnosis on them & key history items. After 15 shifts repeat, (learn the new ones firsts) after awhile you will know thier norm for vitals, meds ect. After a few months you will have them down well.

Should I accept?
I just wanted to add something... Before you take it thinking I will move there or get a roomate. Do your research. I once again have a job that's a drive. I made 3 mistakes. #1 was not checking out prices of apartments, huge mistake. My old place I rent a 2 brdrm/1 bth house for $400 a month, here It's $550 for a studio on the 3rd floor. Average price for a 1 bdrm is $725 a mo. #2 was not looking into roomates, even though I was only looking for a place on the weekend people were like I don't care when you will be here I want half of everything, I could see half of the rent, but more than a 3rd of the other bills seemed a bit much. I would been barely less than a studio to myself were I controll how much elec and such is used. No issues about my food eaten or stuff taken. #3 was looking into drive at the time I would be going to work. While the distance is about the same, the drive takes longer due to rush hour. adding 30min to hour to my drive so 1 1/2 to 2hrs to get to work. Granted it's less but if there is traffic....

What is more reccomendable for nurses now a days?
First read this...https://allnurses.com/general-nursing-discussion/about-that-avatar-900567.html I like to be able to choose, but most jobs don't let you. It's been proven patient can't remember your name but a cute print top THAT they remember! Think about this way do you ever remember the waiter/watiress names? But how they look that stands out more...

Juggling Job Interviews and Offers
You here's an Idea, ask if you can shadow, no decent job will say no. It buys you time and you get to meet those you will work with. In fact if you shadow both, you will have a better chance of making the right choice. Can you call after the cardiac interview or will it be too late?
-
Should I accept?
Well I took I job an hour away it was my first in area I wanted to be in. More on that later.. Off hand I would say the interview or lack there of says high turnover. Minimum,...To find out ask some questions call her back and ask. You Should..Ask if you can shadow for a day, is very normal, don't take job that wouldn't allow you to shadow. You learn A LOT DURING A SHIFT. Either way it buys you time. If your honest that your worried about the job you may lose the job...I don't know how hard it is to find a job in your area...If they are short you may still be able to take the job later. Now, back to what I did, and what you may have to do. If you take it, expect to either move there or get a place. Mine was a small town out of the way, almost everyone drove in 30min-1 hr (or more). I got a roomate a woman who like me worked my shift, 2/3 days anyway. We stayed over on our days. Basically, I drove in dropped off my stuff and went to work, slept, then after my last shift drove by and got my stuff (unless I packed the night before) and went home. Tjis works well if get 3 in a row. It allowed me to be there when an knew an ice storm was coming in. I just went and slept there so no driving. It sounds like weather is a real issue. If you do decide to pass, then tell her alfter really thinking about and crunching the numbers you can't in good conscience take the job. You could mention the money (if it's a barrier to moving) but it's not a good way to go, (you may get a pay bump but you may lose the job offer too.)

Medical assistant position will help me land an RN job?
It won't hurt but probably won't help either. The best thing on a resume is long term jobs. ie. 10 yrs at walmart vs 3 months at this doctors office and 6 mo at xyz... That said, if you do that, take a short term job, you can find one on Craigslist, where they are looking for someone, while another employee is out on maternity leave. At least it won't look bad or come back to bite you. Focus on passing NCLEX. Get and older Saunders book, they kind that still reviewed everything 2011 or sooner. Try a hurst review. Passing is everything...

Cant get a job almost 1 year later
Barbara H. (first please change your name if that's your real name) https://allnurses.com/general-nursing-discussion/about-that-avatar-900567.html I hear what your saying, and let me put this out there. My first job was using a lot of travel nurses, I learned/was trained by a couple of them. They were so short they need to pay for experience. Basically they had a hard time keeping people and still do. I got my year and left. Point of fact everyone I worked with on my shift with exeception of 2 people out of 15 left within a month of each other. Most of us stayed till we had another job, several just called and said they wouldn't be back. the other shift had a similar issue. So it may not be don't want to hire but a lack of people who can train, and job that can only affored so many newbies at once. Would you want to be a patient or have a family member on unit staffed by almost all new grads??? NO you need certian number of people to be trained.

Cant get a job almost 1 year later
So I'm of 2 minds one to be helpful and one to be devils advocate. The first one... Apply at all nursing jobs, Nursing homes, Docotors offices and state jobs. Don't be picky that 1 year anywhere teaches you a lot. The state is ALWAYS looking for people willing to work in psych hospitals and jails, and it pays well. You can even find jobs through craigslist. Lastly maybe you do need to move. Devils advocate... Has everyone else you went to school with gotten a job? Have you been called for interviews?... If the answer is YES then maybe it's you. Do shower and use deodrant? Dress for business, ie. no boobs/bra straps showing skirt to the knees. No tight anything? No tats showing, no fake nails? Do you smoke? I bring this up because I went to school with a guy how couldn't find a job. Seriously he showed up smelling like a dirty hamster cage, unbrushed teeth and so not dressed well. I have seen people dressed like hoochie mammas, apply for jobs or come to interview, yes may were applying for CNA but some for nursing jobs. Other have reaked of smoke, and yes I get job interviews are nerve wracking, and if you smoke you smoke more. (and washing clothing and keeping in no smoke area, brushing your teeth really help if your a smoker) Perhaps you don't interview well. Tape the next one a listen to it with some you can trust, or perhaps a clinical instructor. Have your resume looked over by people at your school. Or post it (no real name) on reddit r/resumes. I also remember reading on here about a student nurse who smoked, she was working peds the letter/pst was from the patients mother who wanted to know if she should say something to her or her instructor. That student was good but the smell was very worring. I will see if I can find it. Lastly... Why travel nurses? they can hit floor with little training. After you get a year you be suprised about how much more you know. Early on there is a lot of fear, calling the doctor, talking orders/refusing orders, disagreeing with an order and being able to say no and why. Just everything... that year or 2 makes a real difference.
