True!!!!!!! I have been with Veterans Affairs for 15 years in the ICU...In our city with 5 hospitals--we have the best staffing (all Rn's) in the ICU.., the newest equipment, 5 weeks vacation, 13 sick leave days, double time on the holidays...the list goes on and on! It is such an honor to serve the Veterans!!!

We are also feeling very burnt out here in our ICU. For months and months we have had every bed full, we have done time changes, OT to cover our area. The problem lies in that now as our census is slightly lowerer 1-2 open beds, we are having to float constantly to cover all other areas of the hospital, SDU, pysch, the NH floor and med-surg. We are trying to work out a plan to talk to administration again about our frustration! Any ideas that have worked?? Thank you all!!

Our hospital finally got one this year. No more counting at end of shift for us either.

I have been with the VA for 13 years and I feel the same way you do...We have the best equipment, teamwork approach, and the best staffed ICU in town...It is an honor to serve those who served.

I am in the NP program now...I will do adult/geriatric. I chose that because one of our NP first had geriatric and then was told she could treat those only over 65, so she had to go back and get her adult certification also.

This is my first post to the NP forum....I am in the NP program here in MO. now....I have always wanted to travel more....has anyone tried the traveling NP opportunities?

Hi.... This is Judi.... I have been a RN for 19 years. I got my BSN the last 2 years at MU.... I am now in the NP program. I am in Columbia and I also work at the VA (columbia) ICU...

bottom line..... folllow the policies and procedures in your particluar facility to cover yourself...

I work for the govt... I have not received any memo's etc. about how if will be affecting us.... I have had for several years a second job....if they do not pay overtime at my first job,,I will work at my second.....it will be their loss... and I will continue to fight this law with the unions support...the union has been faxing and calling and lobbying ever since this stupid thing began...

Does you hospital have a union,,,if so go talk to them...

Did you check within the Veterans Association..... I am in the NP prorgam in Columbia at present..

what about contacting the DIvision of aging.... they monitor the NH..

I am a ICU RN of 20 years...we are not like that either..... they say nurses are the only group that eat their young......we work in a very supportive environment also...teamwork approach......sorry the new one is having so much trouble......find the happy supportive ones to associate with...also our nurse manager is supportive of us.....in the old days I did notice that the burnout nurses and angry ones lived very unhappy lives....I learned to not take it personal.....

I will be in Research for the NP program this semester... Some sites I used last semester included..Agency for Healthcare Research, National Guideline Clearinghouse, American Heart assoc. Joint National Institute of Heath, CDC, National institute of Health, Mayo clinic...hope this helps..Judi

In our ICU at the Veterans hosp.... never more than 2 patients per nurse.... fresh hearts 1:1 and more RN's assist if needed....

.........this is my first response.... hope it goes well....I graduated last year from the Univ. of Mo. on-line program RN-BSN..... my raise this year was about twice what I had paid for tuition. Hope this helps ...Judi
