CNA School
i just found out that my job is ending in a few months. i am trying to do something positive with the change and redirect myself into the field that i want to be in. i am wanting to go to a surgical pa program when i finish my bachelors degree, but that is a few years off. one of the requirements of pa school is having hundreds of hours of direct patient care. i am looking for a cna or pct training program that i can do so that i can begin working in a hospital. i have called the red cross for my state, but they don't have anything available. any ideas? thanks. Hurricanes-What do you do with your pets?
In Birmingham, TEARS and the local EMA set up separate pet shelters for locals and evacuees to house their pets during the storm. The radio stations also advertised which motels would accept pets and what the conditions were. My mom and her family came here to weather out the storm. Now she's on her way back to Orange Beach to survey the damage. Good luck to everyone.

LPN's get sued more than RN's?
I don't know the answer to that, but the only thing I can think of is that it might have to do with the limited scope of practice. Maybe there have been issues with LPNs going outside of that???

Questions for Nurses who are married to Nurses!
my SIL and her husband are both nurses. They met while he was a student nurse at the hospital she works at. She was mentoring his friend. He started out at a different hospital with the same shift as her. She works days 7 on 7 off. Then he switched to the same hospital (granted her mother and her aunt also work there) and he got 3 12s 11a to 11p and that was a little harder. But he will be switching to 7a to 7p soon.

Online RN to BSN programs
I have only looked at my local university and the University of Phoenix's programs. Both would take approximately 3 semesters if you went full time. Since ADN programs don't require some of the same pre-reqs though you might have to take some additional classes. For example my ADN program does not require Comp II, any Chemistries, and only 1 humanities other than speech. In addition to the Nursing classes of the BSN, I would have to also add these. When I spoke to the nursing recruiter or advisor or whatever he was at UofP, he said the admission process there is very selective 5-10% of applicants. This might also be something to look at. The online program has some pros and cons other than the regular distance learning issues. You only take one class at a time which is good because you can devote more time to it, but its five weeks at a time, so I wonder what the retention value on that is. Clinicals you do in your place of employment

What I know right now is that she and the baby are "okay." We don't know if this incident was pregnancy related or not yet.

"Non Moms" good NICU nurses
I apologize if this question has been asked before. Do you think that generally nurses with children of their own transition better as new grads in the NICU? Do they normally have a higher comfort level that a new grad with no children?

Co Worker passed out
Just asking for your prayers and support. At the company that I work, one of the employees has just passed out. She is a few weeks pregnant and she lost her last baby. Please keep her and her baby in your thoughts.

Adults Who Can't Swallow Pills
I am one of those who can't swallow pills. When I was little I choked on everything, and I do mean everything (Bacon, baked beans, skittles, ice, popcorn). My parents were always flipping me upside down and banging me on the back while one of them stuck their finger down my throat. Why that would help I don't know. The only doctor I have ever had trouble with when asking for a liquid has been the dentist. All of my other doctors have given me crushable meds, capsules or liquid. I was taking 600mg Ibuprofen and cutting it in half before taking it. It would still take me several attempts to swallow a half, but I got it done. One day though I got an edge on one of them that scraped down my throat. Since then have had to go back to crushing. I know if I ever have a baby and have to take all of those vitamins it will be bad

Too good to aide?
right but, if I am understanding correctly this is not where people are calling off, it's where management is saying we are not busy enough x# of people can go home.

Too good to aide?
wouldn't it make more sense for the low census days to have different sign up sheets for nurses and cnas. Say on monday we can let go one nurse but we have to keep our aides, and maybe on tuesday two aids can get called off?

Naproxen questions
My doctor just switched me from Ibuprofen 600mg PRN to Naproxen 500mg twice a day. Two questions. 1. The pharmacist told me I could crush the pill and then take it. All of the literature I have seen says not to. 2. My insert says not to lie down after you take it. Does anyone know why?

Anyone use dial-up ISP?
I work for a communications company where we offer cable internet services. I also live in an area where I am stuck with dial-up. As far as DBS at 500k, that is 1/6 of the speed we offer. Before you lose your cable internet do a speed test at www.pcpitstop.com or www.speed411.com. That will give you some idea of what you would get from the dish. But 500k is still almost 5xs what you can get from dial up.

Accident Scenes: Do You Always Offer Assistance?
.This was my impression too. The reason for this is someone who did not know CPR would need more time to be instructed on how to perform mouth to mouth (approx 2:40), and then the victims have a 10% survival rate. It takes less than one minute for a dispatcher to instruct some one on compressions. Because of this time difference, victims who receive compressions only have a 15% survival rate.

Good Samaritan Instances
This may be a silly question or one that has already been answered but..... In cases where a nurse is the first to arrive on the scene of an accident, fire etc., he/she perfoms first aid and BLS. How much protection does the nurse have legally in this?

Question re: carpal tunnel and nursing
I would also like to know the answer to this question. I have had CTS in both wrists for more than a year. I got it from a lot of typing at my current job and also at home. Typing doesn't bother me much any more as long as I keep my hands and arms in the right positions. My grip is also good, but I have a problem writing for long periods of time and lifting with one hand. As long as I use both hands to pick up heavy items (dishes!) I am okay. If I try to get something out of the oven or something with one hand, I generally do it but I might feel like I am going to drop it in the process. I will also have more pain than normal for the next several hours. I can't hold newborn to 6month old babies for long periods of time because it puts too much pressure on my wrists. Once they get to a point were you can just let them sit on your hip I can do it.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
I have CTS also in both hands. I am not a nurse yet so I got it at my current job and also at home. I have heard that the surgery usually does not help much. I wear the splints at night and take lots of ibuprofen.

EMTs past or current
Thanks for the information. I am currently in pre-nursing classes. As I have never worked in a health related field and because after this semester I will slow down on the amount of classes that I take until the nursing program is open, I thought this certification might be something that I could do during that down time and gain more medical training in the process.

EMTs past or current
Just wondering if there are any nurses here who were EMTs before they became nurses or who did this while in nursing school? If so, did this help you in your clinicals and once you started working as a nurse?

Introduction and question!
My sister-in-law went to CACC because she also could not get high enough on the verbal to get in at Jeff State. Since I am hopefully going to go into the EMP program at UAB once I graduate I am going to take some of the pre-reqs that Jeff State doesn't require (chemistry) and hopefully I will have less classes to take in the mobility program that way. I have heard that the science part of the PAX is the toughest.

Introduction and question!
My sister in law went to CACC and seemed to like it. The only problem for me is its just as far away as the centerpoint campus. I work two miles from the shelby campus and that's why I like it. You can go to that Alabama board of nursing and get NCLEX pass rates for both schools. In alabama Gadsden state and Bevill State seem to have the best pass rates for an ADN program. Good luck
