  1. I knew a nurse who told a variation of this urban legend. She was a real nut case. I hope J.W. is not your preceptor. If she is RUN!
  2. If you are in a union check to see how many weeks notice is in the contract. Ours is 3 weeks notice if we want full payout on all vacation/sick time.
  3. I know a very good nurse with a severe stutter. She does a great job and it's never been an issue.
  4. Did you ever notice the drug reps all look like Ken and Barbie?

Congrats on your new job. Everything you need to know that is OB specific will be taught to you during orientation. It will all seem a little overwhelming at first but relax and take notes. At the end of the day go home and review your notes. Cervical exams are difficult to master but become easier with experience. If they have a centimeter board at work practice feeling without looking so you will get an idea of what the sizes feel like. Read a book by Michell Murray on fetal monitoring. She is the expert in the field. When you get to NRP study the book and practice. Don't be afraid to ask questions. If your preceptor is not receptive to questions then ask for a new one. Don't let doctors intimidate you. You are a valuable part of the team and should never be afraid to call a doctor. I see that alot with new nurses. Relax and enjoy your dream job.
  6. Sounds like he may need respite care. A chance to either get out without her or just be home but not responsible for her for a few hours. Is there a program or family member that could set up some regular time each week? I've seen this do wonders for peoples mental health just to get a break.
  7. I just started Frontier last month and it is an amazing school. It is one of the most respected in the field and the faculty is incredible! I researched many schools and kept coming back to Frontier. I will never regret my decision to go there. It will be a hard 2 years but definately worth it in the end. The comraderie and sense of community among the staff and students keeps everyone going. I can't say enough about what an amazing school it is.

I'm sitting in the computer lab in Aunt Hattie's Barn at Frontier midwife school! I'm so pumped to finally be here. This place is awsome! I'll update later for all aspiring CNMs.
  9. Believe it or not my health insurance does not cover auto accidents. I have BCBS at work and always assumed that would be covered but it's not. Pretty scary.
  10. You might want to wait and see where you will be working. In some areas you can not use your own stethescope for infection control purposes.
  11. It was to sterilize instruments. Also most homes did not have running warm water so it had to be heated.
  12. In younger females the cervix is more susceptible to infection. As you age the cervix becomes tougher (not a clinical term) and is less susceptible. Physiologically speaking, why is there such an increase of STD's in adolecents (especially females)...the answer is not that the have sexual intercourse! Help...
  13. As the saying goes, Put your money where your mouth is. Offer to adopt the baby. Offer to help in some other way. Ask her what you can do for her. Otherwise it's not really any of your business.
  14. Maybe they thought that because of our paultry wages.
  15. Thanks for the information. Thats pretty much what I found. Zavanelli maneuver is a manuever of last resort. It's pushing the head back in by reversing the mechanism of delivery. Tocolysis would be given and a c-section performed. High morbidity with this procedure.
