No implants-I was diagnosed with psoriatic/rheumatoid arthritis. I take it day by day, some I am horribly achy, others are more tolerable. Thanks for the thoughts!

I have some peds questions. I will be doing my peds rotation there. Even if you do not work there but do peds maybe you can help. I have dreaded my peds course from the beginning and now it is here. I am terrified, terrified of seeing terminally ill children, having to provide care to them and support to their families. I do not know if I can hold it together to do this appropriately. I am the type of person that can not even hear sick child stories, I know I need to just "suck it up" and realize life and death happens to us all but I am really struggling with this thought. I know there are different peds floors there, requiring different types of care, if you work there & want to pm me I will fill you in a little more. I guess my question is how do you deal with this? I know these are people that need care & support, but how do you hold it all together? I hate to sound immature but you people are angels, I don't know how you see it everyday and still function. The thought alone consumes me. Thanks for the help~

yes, actually I will only be working on the permit until graduation. I am so far 95% sure I won't take the LPN boards. My NM cleared me for the position and by the time I graduate I will be working for about 3-4 months. So it is not worth it unless I do not pass my RN boards...then I will have to transfer to another position until I do pass because I will not have that LPN licesure. At least I will be getting a little more experience. I will be working with a veteran RN who requested the she be the one to precept me, so everyone is comfortable with the decision. Thanks for the input.

GPN's here need permit in hand to work until boards are taken, but graduate RN's may work immediately after graduation without a permit until it comes in the mail...as long as they have sent in for it. They say that the difference is because we are from an RN program and haven't graduated from an LPN program, although we still meet all the requirements to take our LPN boards and to practice under the GPN scope. We are eligible 1/2 way into our program to do this.

Happened to me. We worked in the regions cancer center. They just spent millions on the op section, we were inpatient. They started remodeling some of our rooms. Media & community were praising us blah, blah, blah. I come in to work one day, hallway was dark and patients were gone and there was a sign on the locker room door to report to the 3rd & 4th floor after punching in. They divided us up among the hospital and said they were "cleaning & doing updates", we would be floated until it was completed. There were lots of "cut days" where there was too much staff, we would get a call @ home or when we showed up they would tell us to go home. Many people started leaving. Our cancer pt's were bunked in with the ortho unit patients. Can you imagine what is was like for both patients? An end stager and a total knee in the same room, etc. We tried to give the private rooms to those people but there are only so many and now with a unit out not alot of room. Not a nice scene. They never did tell us the truth, as new positions opened up on other floors they made those our "new" homes. About 6 months later they started reconstruction making offices over there and low & behold we merged with another hospital. ???? We were a prominant hosp. Why the merge? Lots of theories but my point is, they STILL won't admit that they had that in the works beforehand.:trout: No chance to protest, no chance for community or staff to voice their mind. It's been about 7/8 years. Still a sore spot for those of us that were maligned.

I love that! That's great. I know only a handful of those. And a few of those docs are just starting out, I hope they don't lose "that".

:yeahthat: I am married but even before that there was no interest for me there. Whether it was the attitude some carried or the hours worked, it just wasn't a right match for me all around.

I am a "quasi' SAHM! During school I work 4-8 hours/week. I have recently bumped up more during my summer break. My nursing classes are great, they are a more mature group- starting families, already have them, or have raised their kids and are now working on something for themselves. It's good to be around people that understand!! Good luck ladies!!

I am now eligible and waiting for the response card to take my NCLEX. How do your schools/place of employment do it? My hospital will not let an LPN work without a permit in had, but will let an RN work without it until it comes in the mail. Has anyone ever heard of that before? Just wondering what the difference would be. I couldn't seem to get an answer, our state law says that you may practice as long as you have sent your requirements in.

Hi, I have a question, I am NOT asking for a dx I am just looking for some input. My 3 year old about 2 months ago all of a sudden couldn't walk on his r leg, he said his foot hurt. Dr looked at him said he thought he was OK just to watch him, if he kept limping or not walking in the next 1-2 days to call him. He was better the next day. Well 4 AM, I heard him crying and I went to his room he said his leg hurt, I thought maybe he had a "Charlie Horse", from sleeping the "wrong" way. But at 8 this morning he cried when he tried to walk said his foot hurt and he pointed to the outside of his foot. He wouldn't get off of the couch all day and whines when he has to. We have an ortho appt @ 2 tomorrow but I am so nervous. He has no visible signs of bruising, scrapes, cuts, slivers etc. 2 days ago his grandfather said he got into his chair and said that his foot hurt, he looked at it but didn't see anything, and my son went about his business. Does anyone have any idea what I can expect? Should I be looking for something? is there something I should be doing? thanks for your help,

I was under the wrong impression. This is a full system where they know that child is there immediately. This is great. This, yes is lifesaving and a God send. :redpinkhe This I do agree with and believe it should be more available in other states as well.

Adoption, yes. Abandonment NO! I don't care how "safe" they "think" the child is left. Now this child can't be adopted until she is a toddler...what a shame. Poor baby.

Well, if it's any help, it took me 12 years to realize nursing is where I needed to be. I sat and watched the drama's unfold and always thought to myself as well, "nope, not for me." Then I came to the realization, I don't have to be like the others that gave me that bad taste. I know lots of wonderful nurses, why can't I be like them? I love the feeling that I get when patient's eyes light up when they see me. I love when they feel that they can talk to me. Do I get patients that could care less whether I am there or not? Sure. LOL But it is fufilling and I know this is what I am meant to do. Always has been, I just got sidetracked. People I work with have asked me why it has taken me so long to realize where I need to be...I say, "I just wanted to be sure before I made the commitment." I don't give specifics but it was apparently clear to everyone else but me. I love to do volunteer work and have always had a soft spot for those that need to be cared for, animals & humans! I have just decided to dive in and do it, leave the rest of the nonsense behind, that doesn't have to do with me. Remember, it's not all the time and if your like me, the pro's outweigh the con's.

If I had to generalize, I would compare healthcare to any other profession. I say healthcare because I have worked in a hospital setting for 12 years, you see it all the way around from Md's, resident's, administration, na's, lpn's, rn's, housekeeping and right on down the line. It's just like any other field. Teamwork is a big part of nursing. It has to be, you have to work with so many different aspects of care. So many different departments, companies, families depending on your choice of environment. I just believe the difference is the fufillment you recieve of knowing you help make someones day that much better. There are all different personality types in nursing, it can't really be generalized. Hopefully more often than not you will be able to say you love your job and bypass the rest of the garbage. It doesn't always exist but some does lurk just under the surface. But like I said, you will find that in any profession. Good luck you!

Hey Aneroo, Voting for a run of v-tach also. I am not yet a nurse, I am a monitor tech on a critical unit. I have an amazing reference book that I bought when I first started- I still use it!! LOL. It's called desktop cardiac reference, it explains heart rhythyms, tests, procedures, diseases, terminology etc. Even has lab values. My hospital name tag has my pic, my first name last initial and position. My school ID-same institution, same HR dept has full first & last name and my student title. I don't like this at all. My last place of employment I did have an unstable man who's grandfather died on our floor, harass me. I don't like the last name on tags period. Safety issues. If it is a necessity, the first name should be in HUGE BOLD CAP letters and the last name be in regular print type, so the first name is more distracting making the last name harder to see. I am in upstate NY by the way. All of our area hospitals do it differently. I like ours, just the last initial. That's enough needed for identifcation, along with a description of the hc worker, if there was a problem they could be identified.

I am married with a 2 1/2 & 1 1/2 yr olds.I work about 16 hrs/week- go to school t & th 6-9 Sat & sun 7-5 and this month have class on wed nights 6-9. There are intermittant clasess wed & Fri nights. Lots of studying, this weekend I have 3 quizzes and a test. Some days I get up at 4 or 5 others I am up late doing it. Good luck to you!
