i take it by your name that you are already an lvn? if so, does this allow you to do the rn bridge 100% online? i'm just wondering what that would be like? given that i'm not an lvn and started from scratch without any college hours, i tailored my prereqs and coreqs to tvcc (trinity valley community college) in kauffman. however, competition is so great, i'm not certain that i will not be accepted. therefore, i am looking at other programs, but every program requires different prereqs/coreqs (which would throw me a semester behind and possible having to wait a whole other year before applying) that i would need to make application in their program. so, i'm at a loss right now ... trying to figure out what plan b and c will be. i have visited el centro, but it just wasn't for me (so large). collin county is on my list to contact, but i believe that they take a different entrance exam than the hesi a2 that i have already successfully taken (plus i would need 2-3 additional classes). i am currently taking an online class through paris junior college, but that is a little far for me to drive. i have looked at grayson county college (again a couple of additional classes). i just learned of panola over the weekend from this message board (defiantly want to talk to them). navarro college is another program who offers an information session in november. i have even contemplated getting my lvn first and then bridging. i just don't know what is best! decisions, decisions! lol

My school has an orientation as well. I read on another thread that you get to wear the honors collar/cord at graduation, but I am wondering if this would still apply if I went to a different community college (nursing program) than where I earned the award? SJ

I just received an invitation from my community college to join phi theta kappa honor society for two-year colleges. would it be advantageous of me to join ... as in helping me to get into a nursing program over someone not a member, or should I just save my $60 membership fee?

is anyone enrolled in the panola one program? i would love to hear your thoughts about admissions and the program based on your experiences. (lecture online, but can clinicals be arranged in hospitals closer to my home? is there ever a need to drive to carthrage?) panola's website doesn't state how many applicants they accept each semester. nor does it say what they base their acceptance on (gpa, points etc.). i would be most appreciative for any information you have to share! thanks! sj

if you don't mind me asking, which school (grayson or collin county) were you accepted into? i am looking at both programs as well. i have taken my prereqs for trinity valley, but it seems that grayson and collin require a couple of additional courses. do you mind sharing exactly what classes you have taken and a round-about gpa and entrance test scores? more-or-less, i'm not sure what i need to do to apply at these two school. i have taken a&p i and ii, intro psych, human growth/life span, eng. 1301, microcomputer (theater appreciation. in oct. and microbiology in the spring). i have taken the hesi a2 with a cumulative passing rate of 90%, but i don't mind retaking if that is not high enough. (i've only taken it once and without studying... so i know i can do much better, if needed). thank you for any advice or guidance you may share!! one last question -- what is the attitude of fellow classmates that you are/were competing against for a spot in the nursing program? meaning, is it a 'dog eat, dog' world... people looking out for only themselves, back stabbing, doing whatever it takes for themselves to advance? sj

If you look at the accredited programs on the Texas Board of Nursing website, they list only 2 diploma programs in Texas (Lubbock and San Antonio). My mom has been a nurse for 35+ years. It seems that years ago many hospitals had their own programs (they liked to train their nurses a certain way). It doesn't seem to be that way now ... everyone wants you to come with experience. I'm taking prereqs at a local community college. That seems to be the only way to go these days. Good luck! SJ

my test did not have any algebra. it had lots of ratios to fractions or to decimals and vice versa etc. addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of fractions. a few roman numerals and military time. also, conversions: gallons, cups, pints, quarts; pounds to kilograms; miles, yards, kilograms etc. my test was no more than 54 questions. i had a drop down calculator and it was not timed. with that said, you are only allotted four hours for all three sections, but you can spend as much time as needed on any area. also, my test was computerized. therefore, once you answer a question there is no going back to change your answer. i hope this helps you out! i wish you the best of luck! please let us know how you do! sj

My community college ADN program requires Anatomy & Physiology I and II. In addition, microbiology, general psychology, Human Growth & Development, Eng. 1301, Microcomputer, and Humanities. If I were you, I would check with the program in which you plan on attending to make sure that all your prereqs from the community college will transfer. this is how my professor does things and i too haven't been able to figure a way to study. any help is appreciated!! :redpinkhe classes monday and wednesday, tests on wednesdays. monday, following a test, my professor will begin the new material. she hands out photocopies of the chapter (super small font, front and back, 6-8 pages per chapter). she reads these notes verbatim, giving very little explanation. wednesday is the same, completing chapter 2. monday we complete chapter 3, plus our professor will read aloud the entire test (without answers) for us to audio tape. the test is given the following class day (wednesday). the problem i ran into is that these tests are 50 short essay answers, no multiple choices. the amount of information that we must know in order to write a short essay answer is mind boggling. this wouldn't be as much of a problem if our tests were multiple choices and i could pick out key words and narrow down the answer choices. any suggestions on how best to study for these type tests when we only have one day between finishing the lecture and test day? so much information, so little time to memorize. not to mention that we don't get alot of explanation of how things work and we have to figure this out on our own. thanks!!

Thanks everyone! I am happy I bought my book from the school bookstore since I can not find the same ISBN online. Class starts on Wednesday. I can't wait! There has been a two week break between spring and summer semesters -- seems like a lifetime of waiting for the summer semester to begin! SJ:redbeathe

okay all, here's my situation. my bookstore is selling my a&p book for $200. i went to the bookstore, checked out the cover pic, author, publisher, and isbn. i found what seems to be the exact same book online with identical everything except isbns for $50 less. i chickened out buying from online and went with the school bookstore book because of the different isbns. my question is could the online book be the exact same book as the bookstore book, but with different isbns? thanks!! sj:redbeathe

i totally agree with rb2000! i am quite a bit older than you (37 y/o) and i am not the oldest in my classes (i am starting my second semester of prerequisites). there is a mix of ages. i have found that the young student struggles more than the older student (at least in my classes). i think the life experiences that we have, by being an older student, helps us to relate or apply the material a little easier (plus we seem to have our priorities in place). my mother returned to school (35 years ago) at 34 y/o and had no problems getting a job, even way back then. knowing you are working full-time and have a little one at home, you may want to consider taking some of the prerequisites online. every program is different in their requirements. the application process at my community college is based on a point system. they reward you with an additional point (every single point counts!!) if you take 15+ hours with their institution. therefore, i chose to take my prerequisites through them. i wish you luck!! if you have any other questions please don't hesitate to ask!! sj:redbeathe

it has been 20 years since i graduated from high school. i too, was a young mom, but i have always had an urge to go to college. what held me back was knowing i would have to take an entrance test to assess my education level. for some reason this terrified me. i was not a great student in high school; in fact i struggled quite a bit to keep up with my honor society friends. i suppose knowing how much i struggled then kept me from even trying, until now! in january i took the thea (entrance exam at my community college). five hours were allotted to taking all sections of this test (math, reading, and writing). i could have used seven hours. it was not a computerized test; therefore, i was able to skip around when i felt tired or bored. i left the math for last because i felt like if i needed to take a developmental class then math would be it! i pass the reading and writing which placed me into college level classes and missed the math by 4 points. i suppose i could have retested and probably placed out of the developmental math class (intermediate algebra), but i decided to complete the course thinking i would benefit from the refresher. i am happy to say that this spring was my first semester of prerequisites (intermediate algebra, english 1301, development psychology, and microcomputer) and i made a 4.0. i will be taking a&p1 all summer and finish up this fall with a&p2, human growth, and art/theater appreciation (requirements). what got me into the front door of the community college was that i found another mom (mom to a friend of my son) around my same age, that was in the same boat as me and we decided to conquer this together. if she happened to quit today, i would still continue on because i have proven to myself that i can do it! sj:redbeathe

i attend a community college and i am considered 'out of district' because my county does not pay taxes to the community college. therefore, my cost is a little more than others. this past spring i took 12 hours (4 classes) and paid $252 in tuition, $252 in general fees, and $252 in out of district fees. as for books - i would have paid $350 for used books at the book store, but i rented my books from chegg.com for $180. (that little difference really helped!) if i were you, i would look online and see if your school has their price per course listed. if you still have questions don't hesitate to call and speak with an advisor. that's what they are there for -- to answer questions! best of luck! sj

i am attending a community college adn program. the only "prerequisites" that my school requires are a&p i and general psychology. however, our admittance to the program is based on the number of points that you have earned. it is not possible to have to needed amount of points (10+) without taking other "suggested" classes (a&p ii, microbiology, human growth, microcomputer, and english 1301, humanities). this spring i took: general psychology, eng. 1301, and microcomputer (if i would have known, i would have taken all three of these classes online). if you are looking to do as many courses online as possible, i would suggest classes such your psychologies, medical terminology, computer, and english. i have not yet taken a&p and my school does not require chemistry; however, i would suspect that these would be difficult classes without lecture and lab. i suppose it all depends on the type of learner you are (i.e auditory, visual, kinesthetic etc.). best of luck! sj
