Hi there! I got accepted into the Collin County program for spring 2011. Both the Collin and Grayson admissions are based on a points system, but they are different. Collin County's points system works like this: -There are 4 Pre-requisite classes: A&P 1 A&P 2 Microbiology Statistics If you have taken all 4 of these and make a C or above you receive 4 points (1 for each) -Next they look at the cumulatvie GPA of ONLY those 4 pre-reqs. If the GPA is 2.5-2.99 you get 1 point If the GPA is 3.0-3.59 you get 2 points If the GPA is 3.6-4.0 you get 3 points So the most you can get from the GPA of the 4 Pre-reqs is 3 points -Next they look at the cumulative GPA of only the classes that will apply towards the nursing program; which include those 4 Pre-reqs and several Co-requisite classes, which include: General Psychology Composition & Rhetoric 1 Lifespan Psychology Introduction to Sociology and any Humanities/Fine Arts/ or Philosophy class The maximum amount of points you can get is 3 points and the same GPA scale is used as above. -The entrance exam you have to take is the PSB - Nursing School Aptitude Examination and you can get a total of 6 points there. If you go here http://www.collin.edu/nursing/ you can find how the scoring for the PSB is broken down and everything else about what you need to do to be ready to apply. So when I applied I had straight A's in all of the Pre-reqs and Co-reqs except statistics, which i had not even taken. They will let you apply with 1 pre-req in progress. So I ended up having 15 out of 16 points, and got accepted. I am taking statistics now. For Collin County it looks like the only classes you have to take are Statistics and Microbiology (also sociology but you can take that while in the program or over the summer if you want). If you wait until next spring to take both of them I think you will be able to apply for the program starting in january of 2012...but if you try and take just one of them over a wintermester you can apply in the spring for the fall 2011 class. I currently go to a different community college, so I was not around any of my future classmates, and I don't know anyone who applied or got accepted so I can't tell you if they are nice or really competitive or what..but getting accepted is competitive and I am sure there are going to be both nice and not so nice people trying to get into any nursing program. The only advice I can give you is to try and make A's because GPA is such a factor at Collin County... I took ALL of my pre-reqs online and LOVED it....also you have to get all of your immunizations and make sure you turn them in...I would get them now!!! So here is som info from the info packet I got from Grayson: Required science courses are Microbiology and Lab, and Anatomy & Physiology I & II and Labs A = 3 points B = 2 points C = 1 point Maximum = 18 points. If there is only one grade for a four credit hour science course, the student will receive the same points for the theory course and the lab. Required academic courses receive one (1) point for each course completed with a "C" or better. (English Composition I & II, General Psychology, Life Span Psychology, Sociology, Speech, and one elective) Maximum = 7 points. Evolve Admission Test 89.5 - 100 = 3 points 79.5 - 89.4 = 2 points 74.5 - 79.4 = 1 point (Maximum = 3 points) In-district residents (Maximum = 2 points) Based on GCC residency criteria. The total maximum number of points that can be earned is 30 points for Grayson County residents and 28 points for non-Grayson county residents. Soo I had 28 points when I applied to Grayson college and the minimum amount of points they accepted was 25...they did not accept me because I did not have my second and third Heb B shots completed...even though on their web-site it says you dont have to have those when you apply as long as you get them BEFORE the first day of classes, which I would have haha. But anyway I am really excited about going to Collin County it will be 10 minutes from my house and they accepted me knowing I would turn in those shot records as I got them! I can tell you that when I went in to both schools a spoke with people in the nursing department they were kind and helpful, so you should go and talk to people at both schools! anyways i dont know if this has been helpful at all, but good luck in whatever you decide!!
