Things you'd LOVE to be able to tell patients, and get away with it.
Yes sir, You're right. It is completely my fault that you are back in the ER less than 12 hours later, still vomiting. When I d/c'd you at 0600, I should have including in my d/c teaching for you're alcoholic gastritis that "clear liquid diet" does not mean switching from whiskey to vodka! My apologies. No, Ma'am. I'm sorry that "mamma" hasn't eaten all day. But it's 2200 you've just arrived, couldn't you have feed her at home or does the toe pain she's had for 3 months impair her ability to eat? No, Princess. The preg test we administer pop up with a plus or minus sign, just like the ones at the store. They do not answer "Johnny or Slick". I can't tell you who the baby daddy is. Yes, I realize that the doctor "has been in the room next door yelling for over an hour". It's called a trauma code. It gets loud and ugly. No, I will not pull him out to come look at your baby's diaper rash, even if it would "just take a minute".

SUNY Delhi
I graduated SUNY Delhi LPN program in 2003 and RN in 2004. It is tough, academically but I never felt the instructors were trying to weed people out. We started with 91 in my LPN class and graduated 64 LPNs, 61 passed the boards on the first try. Of the original 61 LPNs that I graduated with 51 went on to the RN program. 39 graduated RN and 37 passed the boards on the first try. It is hard but those are pretty good NCLEX results. I grew close to a few instructors that I'm still in touch with. Individual perspective an all....

10 things you say at work lay people could get arrested for
OMG, I did this last night at work!! Was sending a pt to the floor from ER and floor's fax machine wasn't working. The receiving nurse called to tell me she hadn't gotten report and I said, "OK, can I just give you oral?" Pt (young guy) in the hall bed across from me says, " You can give me oral." I had no response, just turned 5 shades of red.

New signs to post at the door
How about We Are Out of Narcotics!! That oughta cut the number of "waiters" and "whiners" by half.

Is active FL license necessary to begin work?
I went through this a couple of months ago. I was hired and started orientation before I had my Florida license but was not allowed on the floor until I had my temporary permit in my hand. If you fill out the application, pay your licensure fees and provide a copy of your current license, Florida will issue you a temporary license until your permanent one (complete with background check) comes through. When I applied, they said it would take 30 days for me to get my temporary permit. I was lucky, I had mine in 9 business days. You can fill out the application on the Florida Dept of Health website.

Florida Roll Call ......
Hi! I'm a new transplant to the tampa area, originally from Arkansas moved here by way of NY. I went the LPN to RN route and just passed my boards this June and got a NY license. I'm waiting on my Florida license as I type this. Any day now!! I have to find a job! Darlene, I'd like to pick your brain about Tampa General. I've had interviews at South Bay and Brandon, but my goal is an ER position at TGH. Any advice? So far I love Florida, it's a whole lot like Arkansas but has sand. LOL. My husband, born and bread up state NYer absolutely loves it here and swears he'll never leave. I have a 10 year old stepdaughter and two wonderful pupperwuppers.

Thanks Guys
I never tried Kaplan, so I don't know anything about it. I used Saunders, mainly the cd, and really liked it. Keep the faith!!

Thanks so much Anne! Computer shut off at 75 questions and I thought I was going to puke. I didn't feel at all confident. It took me a good 3 minutes of sitting afterwards just to get my feet under me and walk out of the room. Positive thoughts heading your way!! I'm sure you did great!

Just got home from test
happylush!! I just took mine today too. I don't know whether to laugh, puke or cry. I'm fairly sure I bombed it but praying I didn't. What the heck are we gonna do with ourselves for the next 48 hours? Mine shut off at 75 and I wanted to scream "turn it back on, turn it back on, I'll do better I promise!". Sending good vibes to us!!

Need positive vibes!
I'm taking the NCLEX on 6/24! I've never ever had test anxiety before and I can definately say that I don't really care for it. I've got the Saunders review book and CD and I'm consistently scoring 79-82%. I'm doing about 300 questions per day and I'm getting just a little fried. I plan to study until Tuesday, relax Wednesday and hopefully pass on Thursday. That's the plan anyway. Any advice is appreciated!

Should new LPN grad go into Med/Surg right away?
I started in med/surg the day after I graduated LPN school (last year). Honestly, I was confident in my abilities to give a bed bath and that was about it! I was nervous too, but I had a great preceptor and work with a fabulous group of nurses. There was only other LPN working night shift with me, the rest were RNs. They were all wonderful and made a concerted effort to teach me new things. Whether or not you have a great experience on med/surg or in a clinic as a new grad will have a lot to with who you're working with. Med/Surg is tough but it is a really good learning experience. I don't have any experience in clinic, but I'm sure it has it's own difficulties. Have you visited the areas you're considering working in? Do you know anyone that works there? I originally wanted to go into Med/Surg for the standard year or two, finish my ADN and move on to ICU or ER. I've fallen in love with Med/Surg and can't imagine working anywhere else. (Okay, I'm biased..LOL) Best of Luck whatever you choose and congrats on finishing! I graduate (ADN) in two weeks. I'm sure you'll get better advice from the nurses on the board with more experience, but I thought I'd offer my two cents. Feel free to give me change! LOL.
