Thanks for the recommendation for books by Paul Offit. I just finished Autism False Prophets. It was very informative and does a really good job explaining the research at the time. It was written 10 years ago though. So now I am trying to find something more current.

I would also like the facts for myself. Because I would like to be more informed.

I am looking for some current reliable immunization research. It seems like there has been a recent resurgence of anti-vaxxers. So I would like to increase my knowledge of the actual facts so I can better discuss the facts.

I would ask what kind of training they are going to give you. I would also ask what types of needs are you going to be dealing with. G-tubes, trachs, vents, etc. Personally I would not take a 1:1 position as a new grad unless you are very confident you can do what they are asking of you by yourself.

In DC HPV is mandatory for all students over the age of 11. Parents are allowed to opt out. Last year DC decided to require that the opt out forms be sent in every year. I work in a special needs school where most parent choose to opt out. Our students can stay to age 22. So parents now have to resign the same form every year for 11 years. DC will not allow permanent exemptions for special needs students. Trying to get all those forms has proven to be challenging.

I use Moore for basic supplies (gauze, syringes, bandages, etc). But for more expensive supplies I shop around because Moore's prices are very high.

I think I can win for the latest day off. I get out July 31 and only have two weeks off. My school is an 11 month program. But that's ok, I think I would get board having 3 months off.

I am at a special needs school and we have over 100 students with autism. Many of them are nonverbal. We treat them as you would treat a typically developed student in terms of fevers. But when it comes to most other things, we don't have hard and fast rules. Most things are on a case by case basis based on deviations from the students baseline. For example if there is a student that make themselves vomit, we wouldn't send them home for vomiting unless it was more then usual. Or if a student has certain stimming behaviors and stops doing them we know something is probably going on. If I don't know the student that well I depend on classroom staff's observations. It is a different set of skills. My advice is to learn the student's baselines really well.

In addition to the usual skills, etc. the biggest things I look for are a real love for working with kids and a real desire to work at school and not just for the schedule.

Currently my school has rolling acceptance for physicals and medication orders. They are all good for a year no matter when they were written. For and example if an order was written in March it's good until next March. So we have orders and physicals expiring all the time. We are a special needs school and the administration thinks this is easier for parents. I think this is a horrible system. I have suggested changing it to what everyone else does. Which is of coorifice having new orders and physicals due at the beginning of every year. The have asked me to write a proposal outlining why it's better then what we and how we would transition. So I am looking for help with references or materials that might help me make my case. Any help would be appreciated.

What systems are you all using for your clinics? We are currently paper based and looking into EMR. Any recommendations or advice would be apprititated. Gary

I hope it gets better. I have missed about 8 days in the past two months. I am exhausted and my office manager and the drs are saying I have been missing to much work. With the bad flu season I am getting even more concerned. I am nervous I will get that too.

I am 6 months into my first year at a peds office and I keep getting sick. I have missed two weeks of work already. I can't take being sick all the time. I am exhausted. Is this going to get better? Am I going to constantly be sick until the summer?

Do they say they will except new grads?

It's hard to get a job anywhere these days as a new grad.

I just got a job at a peds office! It's seems like I won't be using a lot of my RN skills (like assessing, teaching, planning). But hopefully this will be a good start.

I graduated in Dec. 2011 from a second degree BSN program. I have been trying ever since then to get a job in peds. I have tried everything inpatient, outpatient, offices, clinics, psych, local, and out of state. But no one will give me a chance. I can't even get an interview. I am wondering if it is because I am a 39 y.o. guy. There are girls from my program that got jobs right away. They are much younger, went to nursing school straight from their first degrees, and many have no previous work experience. I don't know what else to do. I went to nursing school specifically to do peds. But it is looking like it I want a job I am going to have to do adults. I don't know what to do. Any advice would be appreciated.

They ended up offering me a few dollars more so i took it. It seems like most of the hospitals in the area only start at $24. So wages for new grades are pretty low all around.

I just accepted a job at a family practice office. Hopefully it will be a good experience.

Is $20 an hour a fair salary for a new grad (BSN) in a family practice in the DC area? I like the practice but $20 seems pretty low.
