  1. She is already an RN, what would be the purpose of going to nursing school?
  2. If I am in a hospital or doctors office that don't know me as a nurse then I don't say anything about being a nurse. It irritates me when patients or patients families say "I'm a nurse". Now sure why, but it does.
  3. Ask the house doctor if this is okay and if you feel like it report the problems with her to the house doctor. In assisted living situations anyone can hand the patient their medications to take. They cannot however go in the med room, get them out, etc....They can open the bottles for the patient if they are in the patients private residence within the assisted living facility.
  4. The nurse should listen, offer no personal advice.
  5. I don't want to come across as being disrespectful but if you're not familiar with this subject you should not be attempting to answer it. There are many respected NP programs online such as Vanderbilt University that have no prereq's other than a C or better on a statistics class and a nutrition class. Most every state university has an online NP program and none of them have any clinical requirements except those that are taken as part of the NP program during the second year of the program. Chamberlain has several accreditations besides nursing ones. They are a 120 year old tradition brick and mortar school with several locations, they are not an online only program.
  6. I am in Chamberlain's online RN-BSN program and I think it's great. I have been accepted to graduate school to get my Adult Nurse Practitioner license. There is no GRE or BSN clinicals required just a GPA of 3.2 or higher.
  7. I've been verbally abused several times by patients, family members, a co-worker and a doctor. I've had a telephone thrown at me, but missed. I've never been pushed or spit upon. That would definitely cause me quite a bit of concern, to the point I may want to press charges on the person.
  8. I did call the ethics line over someone not doing their job and had very good results. They took it seriously. The person I reported was my manager. It is totally anonymous. I called from a pay phone. They asked for an e-mail address to contact me to let me know what came of it and I had a fake e-mail address ready and I gave it to them but never received a reply e-mail but the end result was that the manager was let go. I would call. If you went to the nurse manager first, then when you called, your nurse manager would be able to figure out who called the ethics line and may make life difficult for you even though it's not supposed to work that way. The ethics line is there to help you, take advantage of it, just make sure to keep yourself anonymous.
  9. Hmmm......1 post......is it possible Best-Nurse that you work for uniform discount? Just a thought
  10. I buy iron-on patches and iron them on the inside of my pants right where my thighs rub together and I get about 5 times the wear out of them. I like the pants from Wal-Mart the best.
  11. You can get into Chamberlain College of Nursing as long as you have a 3.0, no pre-req's, a little pricey but only 3 semesters. Going for 2 years will cost you the same amount in the long run.
  12. Make sure your last name is not on your name badge, or cover it with tape or a cute smiley sticker. If they don't know your last name, they can't look you up.
  13. Critical thinking is more important to a nurse than being critical of your co-workers and certainly making fun of them was totally inappropriate.
  14. As long as doctors continue to refer to their MA's as their nurse this will continue. Doctors are more than willing to pay $10 an hour vs $30 for an RN to work in their office. I totally get that but then call them what they are, an MA. The sad part is that many MA's will give patients medical advice when they actually have no clue what they are talking about and the patients believe they are nurses who can be trusted. I've heard some really strange things coming from MA's. One patient said the doctors nurse told her that her colored blood count (CBC) was looking better. I had a patient in the ER with an INR of 18.2 The doctors nurse told her that she should take a couple of ASA several times a day for arthritic pain even though she was on coumadin She came in peeing blood.
  15. 107.6 post op infection and we literally packed the patient in ice. Nothing else worked. The ice did work. He did die a few days later.
  16. How did she get caught? Do you know why she was snooping into your records?
  17. It depends on what part of the country you live in. Some areas are ripe for the picking, they are desperate for nurses and don't care if you have an ASN or BSN. Other areas are picky and may decide to hold out for a BSN. If you can afford to finish up your BSN that is always a good option because then if you ever want to get your MSN to teach or be a NP you can easily do so in 1-2 years, even online.
  18. I think there's plenty of room in nursing for ASN's and BSN's. We all know that ASN's can perform just as well as a BSN. Getting your BSN IMHO is about getting to graduate school or moving into management. If I were an ASN with no aspirations to move up then I wouldn't bother getting my BSN. I know the theory is that patients have better outcomes when BSN care for them. Can anyone explain this in a way that makes sense?
  19. I am interested in going the psych route for NP. My question is what does a psych NP do? I have no desire to be a FNP or ACNP. I going back and forth between cardiac NP and psych NP. I have one year left in my program.
  20. I would likely have told the doctor I would not give the med until a ultrasound tech or doctor confirmed the demise for the patient. As the patient I would have refused the med until I was given proof of the demise. I am a strong patient advocate and I have lost a 16wk pregnancy. I understand the legalities of the situation but I would gladly accept the suspension for the sake of the patient. But that's just me.
  21. The best way to take it price wise would be your employer if you work for a hospital, you won't have to pay anything and get paid your time to attend the class. Otherwise you can check a local community college, The American Heart Association and the local EMS county office. For a 2 day class you can expect to pay $90 to $125.
  22. I am shocked that the number of who would and who wouldn't own a motorcycle is about equal. Having worked in an ER and seeing the difference between the injuries in a car accident and a motorcyle accident I would definately have to say NO I would not own a motorcycle.
  23. If there was any way possible I would get my RN straight away and bypass the LVN. I was an LVN and I found it hard to find a decent job. Nothing I took as an LVN transferred to my RN program. I feel like I wasted that first year of school.
  24. I worked full-time while getting my RN but I was doing private duty as an LPN which gave me time to study at work.
