Your lucky just to land a job. i graduated in jan 2010 still no job. Went to coney island hospital one day to fill out an application after sending my resume via fax. When i saw the stack of resume's in the lady went through to get my resume and attach it to the application i almost cried. Worse of all i have a associates degree. GOOD luck...practice with someone,google intreview questions, keep good eye contact, be charming, knowledgable about everything and relax.

Question for all you nurses that agree that nursing ages you. Do you think if staffing levels were up that things would be better?

This is the cry of all the new nurses, i know how you feel. (How can we get experience if we arent hired, & stop lying to us....right). Its a long road traveled with a mighty long way to go. All you can try to do is stay positive.

This post makes me laugh because thats all i can do right now. My humor comes from remembering people saying nurses were in such high demand when i was in school. I think its easier finding a Home Health Care job or Lpn job than a Registered Nurse job. The lower the pay the easier it is to find a job. If i had the guts i would relocate immediately. When i went to a open house fo a Home Care Facility they told me they would be hiring in January 2011 & would call me for an interview but i guess so many nurses with experience went there after i did that they probably filed my information behind all of them or probably they shredded my information. To sum it all up finding a job in New York is like finding a needle in a hay stack. Good Luck though because everybodys luck is different.

Thanks for your responses. i just wish there was a way to do some clinical work along with the case manager position i never had the chance to use my clinical skill and dont want to lose them. One additional question. as a case manager to you atleast retain and build on the nursing knowledge you acquired in school?

I recently went to an open house where the recruiter offered me a case management position. Thankful i am that someone wants to hire me with no experience, however if you start as a case manager is that considered experience when i try to apply for a job at a hospital. My other concern is that i know that a case manager advocates for her patients and with this particular job i will be in an office does anyone know what i may have to look forward to doing. Finally in you opinion should i just wait or take the job?

When the going get's tough the tough get going. Nursing is a challenge even though i havent had the pleasure of working in a hospital yet, i know what i went through in nursing school. Every situation we were handed had us with our backs against the wall and we had to rise to the occasion, similar to life. If she feels like this now can u imagine when she gets into the hospital. My advice if that she should research what she is getting herself into and the beauty of nursing is that you have the ability to be much more than a nurse with your degree, u can continue to so many other areas.

Hello everyone. I am a Licensed Registered nurse in New York, i graduated in Dec 2009 with my ADN, i have been looking for work since i received my license in April and have no luck. All i want to know is what should i do to retain my knowledge. I am slowly losing the things i learned in school, although i frequently review my Med Surg book i just wanted some ideas on other ways to review.

Honestly...anyone can buy scrubs and a lab coat come into a hospital and pretend to be a nurse. The way you wrote what the nurse manager said sound snotty, rude and condescending. In general nurses are uppity...(sorry dont get mad not all nurses but the ones i come across) when i was in school most of the nurses were rude. No matter how nice i tried to be most of the always seemed annoyed when the students asked them anything, it was like we came there to take away there jobs.If that yound lady was acting snotty from the start probably she was praticing for when she really becomes a nurse or maybe she was emulating the NM.

I've heard that alot of seasoned nurses are supposed to retire @ the end of this year due to something with there pensions and then there supposed to be a need for nurses so im holding on to that dream.

When were you accepted?

Well i am trying to volunteer hoping that will work as some kinda experience because EVERBODY wants you to have experience. I went to a agency and the guy was almost laughing at me. First question he asked is "Were you a Lpn before" my answer "No i have no heatlh care experience". Five minutes later he ask's "So you havent even been a CNA" my answer "No, is it easier to get a lpn or cna job" his answer " Well RN have alot more responsibility so your chances are better to find a job as a new grad when you have that type of experience". Those words are enough to make a grown woman cry.

Good luck i've had my License since april 2010 & no job so far. Its very hard in New York right now and nursing schools are pumping out new nurses like nobody's business.

I guess you guys are right maybe i should wait but how long do u wait. My problem is that i'm work as a customer service rep at a job for 7 years and i have people coming up to me asking me "why are u still here arent u a Registered Nurse". But bigger than that i dont want to lose my skills, i know how some seasoned nurses treat new nurses, so i want to retain all that i was taught.Furthermore i am excited about taking care of people and being the best nurse i can be. I've finally began the process of volunteering in a program working with the cna's at my local hospital...hopefully being in that atmosphere will help me retain and learn more about nursing hands-on. thanks for your insights

I am sure some of your are going to think this topic is rather silly but its not to me. New RN grads are finding it hard to find jobs in my area( thats old news...right) however i have seen jobs for lpn advertised with no need for experience. My bright idea was to apply for the job however i was told that i need a LPN license to apply for the job. Well my thoughts were just to get the job just to get some experience...i dont care about the pay and further more it will be alot more than what i make now doing nothing related to nursing. I find that really depressing and crazy all i want is to pratice what ive learned before i lose it. Whats your thoughts on the subject.

I pray that the lord opens a place for me at any health facility that will accept me. But i am very specific i want to be in a place where i will be the most benefit to others and be able to take care of my family. I ask god to grant me the strength to deal with every situation that comes my way in an unbiased manner. God gives you what you need not what you want.

I think it actually should'nt matter howur face look as long as you can speak well and u impress your interviewer with your knowledge. Does your facial apperance really matter?

This no job situation really hurts. Then for those of us who have a job and the people at the job constantly say "how come your still here" it can be really annoying. I am in New York and i have only gone on one interview since acquiring my license in april. I have a aas in nursing and alot of place wants a bsn with experience i dont even know what to do.

I have to give a shout out to all the new grad's of december 2009 may god shine his light upon us and open a path for us to shine our light upon which ever hospital hires us. It's been a long hard road but but WE DID IT!:yeah:

This is for daytonite's prioritizationI am still a student nurse but for some reason i think you would put the patient on the ekg and pulse ox first knowing his history has BIG problems associated with respiratory.

Is this supposed to be a joke or do nurses get that desensitized that they actually act like that. I remember my son having asthma when he was younger and i went to the er and the nurse took one look at him and told me to go back in the waiting room. I was confused because i know that asthmatic usually get prompt tx, so i sat back in the waiting room. When i finally got into triage and my son's sao2 was seventy something the put him in the asthma room immediatly. He ended up staying in the hsptl for a few days..i wrote the nurse up but nothing came out of it. Just thinking about my sons face and how weak he was i feel like crying, i was younger then and that nurse intimadated me so i sat back in the waiting room knowing my son needed immediate tx. Some nurses are so mean....and i PRAY to GOD that i dont act like that no matter. LORD PLEASE.

this is an actual problem and there is a nursing diagnosis for this. what you are actually wanting to say is this diagnosis: nd: ineffective health care maintenance r/t: lack of understanding of treatment regime aeb: discontinuing medications before they have a chance to be effective better? however, above, i listed deficient knowledge, action of zoloft (sertraline) because she has now been put on a specific new drug which is an ssri and i want her to know about it, why she needs to take it, that the therapeutic effect takes up to a week or longer and that if stopped it must be discontinued gradually. should'nt the #1 nd be ineffective therapeutic management and if not why?

I think you get use to it after your first year of clinicals. I am not saying that it gets any easier but u will find your method to the madness. Just try to stay on top of everything that your being taught and if possible read ahead. Best of luck to you
