  1. Those aren't hospital based nursing programs. The coursework happens at PVCC and the clinicals happen at John C. Lincoln hospital. Scottsdale CC has a similar partnership with Scottsdale Healthcare. Riverside School of Health Careers in Newport News is based in the Riverside hospital. This is one of the only hospital based program left in the U.S.
  2. Just make a quick 15 posts and then you will have access to private messages. :)
  3. Oh I appreciate all that CNA's do. I am not bagging on the people who choose to do it, I just don't see HOW they can do it as a career. I loved all of the patients who I met while I did clinicals to be a CNA but I couldn't do that job for long. It actually made me realize that I def don't want to be a nurse which I am thankful for because it saved me a lot of time and money. Now I am headed to grad school for something completely different :)
  4. RSAA offers CNA courses as well. They are located in Mesa and offer a great program. I did the 3 week day program. I would recommend that over taking half or an entire semester. They also offer evening/weekend courses as well. Good luck on your journey and congrats on the babes :)
  5. Honeylips!! That is fantastic :))
  6. Good luck! I used to work at SHC and I LOVED it. I would go back and work there if/when I ever move back to AZ. It is an awesome atmosphere to work in and I haven't found a hospital even close to as good as SHC here in VA.
  7. Thank you tittytatRN, that was exactly my point :)
  8. I agree with the 1st post, the pay in VA stinks! I thought AZ was bad but AZ actually pays RN's, LPN's great compared to VA. I have a friend here who is a CNA at a hospital and her pay is $8.35/hr. That is just ridiculous. In AZ, I worked at a hospital and CNA's made about $13-$14 after shift diff's, etc. And you can make more in AZ at a fast food restaurant than being a CNA in VA. It is crazy.
  9. Being a CNA is a very dirty job. The clinicals are done at a LTC facility which I have no desire working at so it really turned me off from nursing. I am coming back around to the idea but the atmosphere was AWFUL. Plus it is really hard work with crap pay. I wouldn't recommend the job to ANYONE.
  10. I have heard that most nursing programs are very strict about absences. I mean most schools have a waiting list or many people that were turned down in your favor. I agree that you and your husband should be able to take a vacation but I wouldn't expect much sympathy from your professors or fellow classmates. Especially in a graduate level atmosphere.
  11. Congrats and good luck! I would pick being a CNA at a children's hospital over adult care any day. Just apply and see what happens. My CNA program kept telling people that they probably wouldn't get hired at a hospital right out after passing the state exam. A friend in my same class was hired by a hospital right after graduating. I have no desire to work in a LTC facility so I just scanned children's hospital job openings. I have heard that NICU's sometimes use CNA's but you don't do much patient care...More along the lines of doing whatever the nurses need you to do. Good luck!
  12. Why do many professions pay more than a teacher's salary and we are relying on teachers to educate our children? Why do movie stars make millions and still get free stuff galore while most other people bust their ass everyday to make a living? There are many jobs/professions that should be paid more but never will be. I would actually love to just find a career that I loved more than anything and that I would do for free if I had to. :)
  13. I agree with the above posters that you should leave it out. I never wear my wedding ring or mention my children because although employers can't not hire you because of your marital status or whether or not you have 1 or 10 children, it could still sway them one way or another. I think stating that you are able to relocate is more than sufficient :)
  14. Wow, this is a great thread. I have often thought about what else I could possibly do in healthcare that isn't nursing :)
  15. Hello! I am so glad that I have found these threads as well! I have taken many, many classes at RIO and have never had any issues. However, I did take BIO156, 8 week acc. version and barely scraped by with a C. And then last summer I took BIO201 and luckily my instructor was awesome because the format is a JOKE. The final almost killed me and I studied my bum off. I have never been to happy with another C. lol. Anyway, I still need to take BIO 202 and am thinking about taking it at Phoenix College after all of the positive comments on here about their format. I even still have the Rio BIO202 book that costs a fortune but I can't imagine going through that kind of format again and then hoping and praying that I pass the tests after studying and memorizing the many essay topics. Can anyone PM me some names of good professors at Phoenix College? Thanks!
  16. Well, as far as your question about a Cali CNA license being able to be transferred to Kentucky, you would just have to look on the Kentucky state board of nursing website and find out what you have to do. I moved from AZ to VA and my license transferred easily with a simple form sent to VA state board of nursing. I am sure CA's standards for a CNA license will transfer easily to KY. Good luck on your journey!
  17. Oh, my program was a weekend course so we did our clinicals in 2 weekends, 12 hours each day. And the nasty stuff is why I am not working as a CNA. :)
  18. There are so many jobs that you can do other than being a CNA while waiting for nursing school waiting lists. A CNA's job has nothing to do with being an RN at all. You are the very bottom of the totem pole and do all of the grunt/foul/disgusting work. I would recommend this job to anyone.
  19. And I think that if you are lucky enough to get a CNA who doesn't make you do a bunch of nasty stuff then you should stick with them!! I never planned on working in a LTC facility so I just wanted to get through the awful 12 hour clinical days.
  20. Bring a big jar of Vicks because some of the smells that you are about to experience are enough to make you barf.
  21. Being a CNA is disgusting. I do wish you luck and hope that you like it but I honestly don't know who could like changing diapers and smelling the worst smells possible all day long that gets literally stuck in your nose for ages. Becoming a CNA actually deterred me from wanting to be a nurse although I know that as a nurse you wouldn't have to do any of that work because you call the CNA to come and do it. Yuck. I would say just stick with your RN classes and become an RN.
  22. I agree. I have a CNA license it has to be the worst job possible. It is a totally underpaid job and a disgusting one as well. I would advise my worst enemy to go and become a CNA. Ugh. It actually helped me to decide that nursing most likely isn't for me because being a CNA is so gross.
  23. I really think that Riverside is the last or one of the very last hospital based nursing programs in the States. The one the above post is talking about in AZ is the same as any ADN programs across the U.S. The classes are held at a community college and then of course you do your clinicals at a hospital. Riverside's program takes place entirely at the hospital and is known to be a great program and although you only get a diploma, you can always complete an RN bridge program and continue on from there. Good luck on your search!
  24. How is it going so far?
  25. I think 2.5 but there have been poster on here that had 3.4 gpa and were put on the waiting list so I imagine that it will have to be much higher in order to be competitive.
