  1. Gay and proud here ... Like others have said, be polite, professional, and everything else is just "details" I've never had an issue yet.
  2. I wear Dansko's ... Swear by em'
  3. ooooohhhhhh, I've seen that one..... twice. Now I make it a point to ask. Seriously.
  4. Ok, So maybe this is a "dumb question" but anyway.... In the OR, are you required to wear safety glasses? The hospital I just left EVERYONE that set foot in the OR was required to have safety glasses. The new place I work at, the only one wearing glasses is the surgeon, and sometimes an assistant, even then, I've seen a few assistants not wear them. Just think its kind of odd. Anyone?
  5. You know its a full moon without having to look at the sky ...
  6. I find that working night (currently work 12/hr overnight) the staff seems "closer" maybe its just cause I work with a great group of people, but there seems to be more of a team atmosphere on nights. (IMHO) I wouldn't trade nights for anything in the world. What department will you be working in.... all dept's have their pro's/con's
  7. *sigh* These types of attitudes from newbies actually in an odd way amuse me. YES! the are in for a rude awakening. I work in the ER, tell them not only should they be ready to clean up everything, at one time or another. They should also practice their dodging skills, for things being thrown at you by unruly patients. It doesn't happen often, but I've been hit with an IV bag before. lol
  8. In my experience I've seen/done both. It depends on the agency, they usually don't give you a choice, but again, it depends on the agency.
  9. Started out in LTC - HATED IT! Pt's weren't so bad, but I couldn't deal with the "politics" of the place I was working at. Med/Surg - Didn't hate it, but didn't exactly like it either. Trauma/ER - LOVE IT! I love the go, go, go, now, now, now, atmosphere, hours are awesome too, 3 days/wk 7p-7a, I love the overnights.
  10. I HATE that question too ... I usually try to spin the question back on them. Like: "I am a perfectionist, and sometimes its a downfall because I spend too much time checking and re-checking other people's as well as my own work" It plays into the whole. Check twice ... Save a life motto.
  11. Well ... that sucks. In that case I don't know what to tell you. Ask the school. If they are requiring it, they must have someone that they can refer you to. I had to get a CORI check for pediatrics, but thats probably overkill for a school. I'd say google backround checks, I know there are websites that do them. As far where to get a cheap one I have no idea.
  12. They are making you pay for your OWN background check???? Thats usually up to the school/employer to conduct, not you. I've had background checks for employment many times, I've never had to pay for it myself.
  13. I don't know about the first two.... but Croc's I've heard are AWFUL for your feet, as they are made of cheap foam, and not supportive. Plus, don't Croc's have holes in them???? In my ER we were not allowed to wear crocs, or ANY shoes with exposed toes / holes, things of that nature, they were very specific, no mesh, must be closed back. I am a guy, and I wear Dankso Professional's .. I live in them! I wear my clogs with pride too! They are great, then can be expensive though, but they last forever, and well worth it.
  14. I intend to ... Going for Oncology! Thanks! :-)
  15. I went in for my normal shift today, and was greeted at the door by our HR director. I thought to myself, ohhh, boy, this can't be good. Sure enough, it wasn't. I got laid off! At first I was shocked, then once the shock wore off I was pretty angry, because I felt I busted my butt in that ER, never had a complaint, or disciplinary action, nothing! Then as it sank in further I got very upset, I had nowhere really to go, its a VERY small town up here. I thought, Oh god, I'll never get another job in this economy, looks like I'm moving home! I called another close RN friend that I used to work with on my old shift, she was upset for me, then as any good friend would do, took me out to lunch, and then for some much needed "beverages" at our local bar. So with my sorrows drowned, I returned home, and passed out. Waking up with a hangover, ordered some pizza, and then checked the mailbox. Whelp, Guess what was on top of the stack of mail? An envelope from Johns Hopkins. I GOT INTO MED SCHOOL BABY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good bye northern Maine ... BALTIMORE HERE I COME !!!!!!!!! I'M ALREADY PACKING !!!!!!!!!!!! Now THATS how you turn a crappy day into an INCREDIBLE one! I'm sorry guys, I know this has really nothing to do with these message boards, but I have to yell it to everyone!!!! I think I've read the letter at least 100 times so far, I keep reading it cause I can't believe it, cause its not like its just med school .... its Johns freakin' Hopkins!!!! About the LAST place I expected to get into! THANK YOU! to everyone on this board, who told me to apply to med school if I thought I could do it! I decided to try the "all in" approach! IT WORKED!!!! You guys are like my second little family here! *hugs* & *muah* I'm not going to be able to sleep for a week!
  16. :chuckle: :chuckle: I have no idea why this just struck me as so funny.... That totally just made my night!
  17. Y'know what ... this is not going to go anywhere good or productive ... So Admin ... Please close / delete this thread.
  18. Me too sensitive? Aren't you the one that just went flying off the handle calling me typical?????
  19. Woah ... Woah ... Woah ... Clearly you misunderstood my post. I am TOTALLY FINE with her doing light work. I'm not trying to rail on ANYONE. I'm just saying that if she doesn't feel like she can/should do a certain task, then just don't. Don't start it, and then leave it half finished for someone else, cause then paperwork gets messed up, things can get missed, and people could get hurt. I am fine with her being at the desk, my point is that she needs to say something so adequate coverage can be arranged. I was going to be nice to you, but I decided against it. Look ... My father died when I was 3, I lost my mother at 17, buried a sister at 21, and was a widow at 25 .... SO don't you DARE lecture me on LIFE !!!!!!!!! I've been over myself for 15 years, I help EVERYONE, but I am only ONE person!
  20. The heavy lifting, and not do a blood draw from the HIV+ I can totally understand, not and issue in my book. She's using it not to transport urine cups, and collect stool samples.
  21. We have a nurse here in our ER that is expecting, she is just entering her 2nd trimester. Myself and some of the other nurses are starting to get irritated with her, because she keeps using the "I'm Expecting" excuse to get out of doing tasks on the nastier side of our jobs. However, last night she just totally ticked me off. We had a pt come in just last night with difficulty breathing. Pt is in late-stage HIV/AIDS. She was about to do the eval on the PT, until she found out he was HIV+. She then came to me and asked me to take the PT. She flat out said to me that, she wouldn't touch him because he has AIDS and she is too worried and thinking of her baby. At first I really didn't mind, I was rather busy at the time, but still agreed. However, as the night progressed, the more I thought about it the more irritated I became. I understand an expectant mother's want to protect her child, BUT at the same time. She was doing no blood work, and would have no contact with bodily fluids of any kind. I didn't say anything or make issue of it, mainly because she is such a sweet person, and I do get along very well with her, but its getting ridiculous. By the end of the night after several other small things, I was about ready to tell her that if she wasn't going to pull her weight she should just go home! She basically wants to just sit, answer the phone, and triage, which i am TOTALLY fine with, however, stop taking pt's then pawning half of the work off on everyone else! Either do it or don't. She's only in her 2nd trimester, so we've got at least another few months of this, and something needs to be said, I don't want to sound like jerk when I approach our attending about her. Anyone have any input? I know I'm a guy, so hopefully I haven't offended any of you girls, but before you call me an in-sensitive b****rd, I was raised my mother, aunt, and I'm the baby of 5 sisters. When it comes to women, I've heard it ALL. lol
  22. It depends on the hospital ... Where I am they are scraping to find night-shifters.
  23. A Pediatric hospital is hands down, THE HARDEST places to get into. All the req's i've seen require at least 3-5 yrs exp. I don't want to sound harsh, but until you have at least that initial 3-5 years under your belt, You're going to have to take what you can get. I work 12 hour 7p - 7a shift in the ER. I Love it, wouldn't trade that shift for anything, and yes, you can make a living. As far as a 50k living .... ehh.... not so sure about that! Depends on your demographics. In this market, its gonna take you 5+ years to see that kind of money (or longer) If working in an adult hospital is not an option, then I hate to say it, but I suggest you stick with a lab job if you have a bio degree. I'm not trying to be a jerk, I'm just not sugar coating it. Kind of my personality. lol
  24. Well ... All of us in the ER are on 12hr shift patterns. So, the night before our work week starts, there is a group of about 6 of us, we all take turns doing, "dinner & a movie" Each week its someones turn to either cook, or order pizza / chinese, whatever, and pick a movie. We all meet at their place, eat, have a few glasses of wine, and watch a movie, then play cards, or games till all hours of the am. Then sleep the day away, and meet for night shift. I can imagine it could be a little hard for regular shifters, we're on a compressed 3x a week, so its a little easier for us.
