Health Care pay decrease with new health care plan?
Has anyone even seen copies of this supposed plan? Where are all the details? Seriously, I think they will pass it without anyone even knowing what is in it. If anyone knows where there is a copy of this plan please let us know. I don't mean "fluff" either. I mean nitty gritty details.

Parents at Orientation
I think you should give the school a call and see if its normal and customary that parents attend. If they say "usually not" or "its students only" then you have your answer and you'll have to let mom down gently. If they say parents are welcome to attend then I would bring her with you if she wants to go, as I'm sure she must be soooo proud of you!

Those of you who understand chemistry well
I went to a SUNY upstate school and took CHEM 151 (chemistry for the health sciences). That was ten years ago, so I don't know if they have that class anymore, but it was a great class and not that difficult. The professor made it very interesting and I passed with an A...after almost failing chem in high school several years prior.

Rude people in the public library
The library in my neighborhood gets loud, too. Whatever happened to whispering softly in a library??!! Even the librarians get loud! I guess that went out the door years ago with general good manners, and yes, that's when everyone started being glued to their cell phones! I've been trying to think of quiet and peaceful places to study and unfortunately I don't think the library is one of them. I may have to resort to studying in my car or in the bathroom in my basement that nobody ever wants to go downstairs to use!

How Will Universal Health Care Change Nursing?
I would LOVE to hear Canadian's perspectives about their plans, as it is true that I hear a lot of nightmarish stories. It would be nice to hear the GOOD things about it. Anyhow, back to the OP's question...how will it affect nursing??

Cheating on final
That is great that your professor caught this! Do you find it weird that "Ann" chose to sit next to you AGAIN, even after you told her no??? She sounds very bold, stupid AND insecure. God help her future patients!

Weekend Only ADN/RN Nursing Program?
Does anyone participate in a weekend only nursing program? If so, what is the schedule like? Is it every weekend? Every other weekend? When are clinicals, lectures etc? Does this leave you time to work during the week? Any input would be much appreciated as I am trying to plan the next phase of my life. :heartbeat:D

How Will Universal Health Care Change Nursing?
Spidey's mom, thank you for all of the information you posted. I hope everyone reads it. We all need to do our own investigating of this issue and not take for granted everything coming out of the White House. This is a HUGE political issue with lots of emotion on both sides and for us to believe everything we are "fed" is ridiculous. If you do your own investigating, like Spidey's mom did, you will find more accurate statistics and information. Unfortunately, since this is a HUGE policital issue, if you sit around blelieving everything that comes out of the White House you will be seeing everything through rose colored glasses.

How Will Universal Health Care Change Nursing?
Universal healthcare coverage scares me. Such a huge overhaul of our healthcare system cannot be done without sacrificing tons of jobs, spending tons of money and making too many drastic changes. We are trillions of dollars in debt as it is! How are they going to pay for all this? I think it will result in lowered or capped pay for nurses, a decrease in quality care, an increase in waiting for approval for medical procedures etc, etc. I think it would definitely be the end of our healthcare system as we know it. I see nothing good coming out of this at all. Look at the hassle we have to go through for anything that government oversees...do you really want them involved in your medical care? I don't want them involved in mine or my loved ones. Maybe someone out there can put my fears to rest. (I think the we all better brace ourselves.)

Advice to a pre-nursing student?
RetroReactive, do not give up! You are soooo young. You have your WHOLE ENTIRE LIFE to live. If nursing is what you want then go for it. You are only 17??!!!...when I was your age all I wanted to do was become a nurse....that is what I wanted my whole entire life. Guess what I did?? I let the little obstacles get in my way, instead of fighting them or coming up with alternatives...and here I am at the age of 42 and still not a nurse. I will be one day though because I am now realizing that ANYTHING you want in life you can have you just have to GO FOR IT!!! If you want to know what other nursing programs are in your area ask your school guidance counselor or Google it. Whatever you do DO NOT give up your dream of becoming a nurse. It will happen. You will just have to be patient. Best of luck to you!

RN "Desk Jobs" - Need Advice
You could be a case manager for an insurance company...I know an RN who works from home doing this and makes GREAT money. She hadn't been out of school barely two years before she acquired that job. You could be a phone rep for a health information, advice referral service. A few hospitals in my area have a health information number that the public can call for questions about any health issues they or someone they know are having. The nurses answer the phones and offer advice, options and referrals. Maybe a home care agency would need someone with a nursing background for a desk position? Good luck in your search for a position that suits you!

new nursing student/mother of 2/wife needs help with time management
Wow, everyone's tips were so amazing! It was fun reading them all. I am so fearful of going back to school and trying to balance single parenting, working full-time and school. If you can all do it there's no reason why I can't, right? I really think I'm afraid of losing my mind in the process, but a lot of these tips are lifesavers! I've had so many questions answered and fears laid to rest on this website. I love it!!!!! :redbeathe

Learning to be emotionally neutral
Next time, what if you smile very nicely and say " Thank you so much for wanting to help and give advice, but I would really like to figure this out on my own. If I need advice or help you'll be the first one I ask, thanks!"...then go back to what you are doing. A little assertiveness with a smile can go a long way.

What is taught in A & P I?
I took both A&P classes about 12 years ago. Although I don't remember exactly what was taught in each class I do remember you will learn everything you could ever want to know about each body system! It is A LOT of memorization, but in my class (and I had an AWESOME professor) we received lots of diagrams and charts and many tips and hints along the way. I highly recommend purchasing the study guide that goes along with your text book and studying for the class daily. You will learn every body system from integumentary (skin) to cardiovascular, skeletal etc. I was not a "science person" back when I took this class, in fact I did not do that well in science courses my first go round with college back in the late 80's, but when I took these classes in the late 90's I actually received high A's in A and P 1 and 2!!! It helped me to re-write my notes, highlight key points in the text, do the study questions at the end of each chapter and even talk out loud while I was studying...as if I was teaching it to someone else. The main thing I learned from A & P is that the human body is the MOST AMAZING "machine" ever. It will astound you as to what goes on inside our bodies! Best of luck to you!

The weight of the world.
Sarahbeth, I will pray for you. I lost my mom last year to a LONG battle with breast cancer. It was sooooo hard to see it consume her after over a decade of fighting it with a vengeance. There comes a time when the battle cannot be fought any more and peace and comfort are on the horizon. Do what you know is right, listen to your heart, and look to God for comfort during this difficult time.

Syracuse, NY...any jobs for new nurses????
Thank you so much mixyRN. That is exactly what I was hoping to hear! Would Crouse hire a grad from St. Joe's and vice versa? Or do they stick to hiring their own grads? I still haven't decided if I want to go to Crouse or St. Joe's, maybe I will apply to both and see which one I can get into. Do you know if they have a waiting list?

Syracuse, NY...any jobs for new nurses????
Thank you so much for your response, CrunchyMama, I really appreciate it. Some of the posts on this website are so negative, I was really getting worried. Best of luck to you with your schooling. I haven't applied yet, I'm still trying to make sure this is the right decision for me. I've ALWAYS wanted to be a nurse and with my current job being "dead end" I'm desperate to get into something new. There's so much to consider before I take the plunge.

Nursing student/parent needs time mgmt. advice
What time do you have your daughter go to bed at night? I would definitely get her into an EARLY bedtime routine, if she's not already, and then you would have a few hours every evening to study. Children that age can easily be persuiaded into going to bed by 7:30 or 8:00PM. That would give you at least three hours of study time every night. I understand your dilemma, wanting to study like crazy for your degree, but not wanting to miss out on time with your daughter...good luck :)

Unprofessional nurses/power tripper's/ trouble makers
I am not in the nursing profession yet, however where I currently work is dominated by women and everything the OP said goes on where I work, too. The races stick together, the women are catty and obnoxious. One would think this stuff only goes on in high school, but it doesn't. It continues into the work field as well. It's so frustrating. The best thing to do is IGNORE it. If they don't get the reactions they are looking for they will stop, or just move on to make someone else's life miserable. In my experience, the bosses ALWAYS know who is catty and miserable and who is really being a true professional, they just don't do anything about it because they are too busy with their own things. Ultimately these women are very unhappy and can only feel better when they berate others.

In the meantime
I may be wrong about this, but I think you are supposed to wait until you've been accepted to school before you apply for the loans. Apply to school, get the FAFSA form completed and then if you get accepted apply for the loans?? I think that's how it's done. Hopefully someone out there will reply. Good luck!

Thats IT !!! Im Sick of it !!!!
Just DO it. You named all the reasons why quitting smoking will be easy for you. The same stamina you will use to stay focused on your quest to become a nurse you can apply to quitting smoking. You will be so busy studying etc, just like you said, that you wont have time to smoke. Be strong! You CAN do this!!!!!

Syracuse, NY...any jobs for new nurses????
Anyone graduates having trouble finding a nursing job in Syracuse? I'm trying to decide if I want to enter nursing school or not. I'm worried about the job market. How bad is it in Syracuse? I keep reading about horror stories finding jobs in other parts of the country, but how bad is it here in Syracuse? I'm in my early 40's and nursing school would be a complete career change for me. I'm a single parent of teenagers. I don't want to make a mistake by entering a field that has no jobs for newbies. Any advice would be so appreciated, thanks! :heartbeat
