  1. My mother uses U-500 in her pump and has for several years. She rarely has lows.
  2. It sound likes you have a lot of positives about your work that you need to focus on. Take their advise and try something with a slower pace, especially the first year so you can build confidence in yourself. I knew I could never work in ICU/ER due to the acuity and would always be worried that I would not know enough so I never applied to one. I have excelled at working on an OB floor, a Health Dept. and now as a school nurse over the last 23 years. Every one has different strengths so focus on those and find an area that gives you a llittle more leadway in developing your weaknessess. Don't give up on nursing yet.
  3. My dad had a stem cell transplant at Vanderbilt and was on the BMT unit several times for complications from Graft vs Host disease. It was listed as ICU on the hospital billing. Those were some of the most caring nurses I have ever seen. I say you would use a lot of your ICU skills and knowledge. The transplant patients can get very sick after the transplant and on isolation so the nurses become like family to the patients. I think you need a great deal of compassion to work on this floor but I tgink it would be a very rewarding career choice.
  4. That probably was just standard protocol for anyone who reaches a certain number of absences. I would recommend you speak with your guidance counselor about getting a 504 plan. That will cover him for extra absences as long as your dr. is willing to approve it.

Can't imagine why he would need a private nurse for only being a carrier. Lots of people are carriers and don't even know it. I agree with the teacher being more diligent with his hygiene/hand washing but am curious if the Dr. has actually ordered it. I had a student who is allergic to chocolate and tomatoes wanting the cafeteria to make her special lunches, claiming her allergy as a reason. There is always food available without those items. She just did not like our regular school lunches. Told her sorry but other kids don't like the lunches either everyday and she could bring her lunch but appropriate food was available.
  6. 1) what school level do you support? middle school 6-8th 2) how many students are in your school? 500-550 3) how many students do you see each day? 20-30 4) do you have an assistant? no, but i do have a clerk that pulls charts for me and puts the icd codes in the computer. i work for the health dept so we bill for some services and the clerk handles that. 5) what do you treat mostly? depends on the day. lots of headaches, cramps, stomachaches, sore throats. i also do well child physicals and immunizations.
  7. I give immunizations in the school without parents present as long as I have the signed consent from the parent. But I work for the Health Dept. and we have signed protocols including anaphylaxis protocols with epinephrine available for reactions. I have never had a reaction bad enough for epi (knock on wood) but would not feel comfortable doing the immunizations without the protocol and epi present. I work in a middle school so getting the kids to sit still for shots is not usually a problem.
  8. My boss wanted us to make up a poster about our clinic so I decided to write a poem: We never know what'll come through the door It could be wheezing or a big red sore Here comes a pt. who has hit his head He tripped and fell is what he said What do I see as I apply the ice I see some big, moving lice A cut on the hand, a headache or two Just hope no one comes in turning blue My tooth fell out, my throat is sore I shut my finger in the door My lips are chapped, my belly's grumbly I didn't eat breakfast, I'm really hungry We're happy to be here to care for all If you need us, just give us a call.
  9. Frequent flier yesterday said she had a nose bleed during science because of the molecules in Science class.
  10. I work Monday and Tues then off. Yay. Ready for a little break and sleeping in. Have a great Holiday.
  11. I work in a middle school and sadly:o I have had students lie regarding things. This year, so far, it was that I gave the student a H1N1 without consent. The dad called the school upset that his dd had told him she got the shot. The student was my regular so I know that I did not give it to her and I also have a clerk with me in my HR room who knew I did not give it to her. When I called her down to ask her about it she denied telling him that so with her standing there I called the dad back and told him I did not give her a shot and had the student talk to him in front of me so I could hear she was not lying to him again. One year a student said she passed out and was seen by the nurse, me, the mom was upset that she was not called by me. It was a day I was not even in she school due to meeting. Middle school age is notorious for lying. I am glad I have a clerk to back me up.
  12. Too funny I had one the other day that said...."excuse K, she had the "sh*its"
  13. I usually try to find out why they are so sleepy: up texting late last night, watching TV or what. If it is one of those reasons I send them back to class and tell them it is a lesson learned that if you stay up late you WILL be sleepy. I had a kid last week that could not stay awake that was sent to me, found out he had a phenergan before school. I could not be at school if I had a phenergan before school so I did call his mom to come get him. Others it just depends, parents up fighting and yelling all night that keep kid awake I would probably let them rest for a class period. I don't have a hard rule. I just evaluate each situation and decide. I do send plenty back that just stayed up late for fun.
  14. I have heard that kids who are around people making meth will have an urine odor due to the anhydrous amonia used in making meth. Hope that's not the reason.
  15. I took a 4 year break after my third child to stay home. I just put that I left last job to stay at home with a new baby. I was hired in my first interview and have been back in nursing:redbeathe for 5 years now.
