  1. blood clot, can result from trauma etc - that would be why the ultrasound is required.
  2. I worked in the burn unit, caring for a cop with 1st and 2nd degree burns of his face and hands (he was a very ranking cop). The police were disposing of a very large cache of weed from several busted grow-ops and Mr. Policeman decided to really get things going, some gasoline would help...it helped alright and earned him a nice flash burn. Not only was this one bone-headed stunt, he did it in front of large class of soon to graduate cops. I'm sure he'll never live it down - we called him the poster boy for what NOT to do.
  3. Senior IT Security Project Manager...I call him a computer geek.
  4. I have the light fairy - he/she turns on the lights throughout the house and garage; the kids would NEVER leave a light on.
  5. lovely - reminds me of every reason why I left hospital nursing. be careful out there
  6. I also recall that when UK refers to "5 weeks vacation", 5 weeks means 35 paid days off. In Canada, 5 weeks mean 25 days off (a week means 5 working days, not 7 week days). So if you start with an employer, and you get 3 weeks vacation, that only 15 work days, not 21
  7. 41 yo male, dropped to the ground at a bus stop. RN on bus started CPR and he was transported to ED. 1 1/2 hours of resustiation, he was full of every tube/iv/pacer leads. The floor was littered with syringe caps/packaging and blood from mulitple cutdowns. After the first hour, his family arrived and were right outside the door - I'm sure listening into everything. He did not survive and we never saw any cardiac activity at all - he was dead when he hit the ground. Later found out that he'd just started dieting/using diuretics and "herbal" weight loss pills. So sad, several kids left without a father.
  8. Serene is a great word for high birth numbered mothers...how could they be anything other.
  9. I love the vaccine/cow trade, sounds fair to me LOL
  10. They say you learn something everyday. Nebulized alcohol, alcohol tampons?? - this is just sick. What on earth will they think of next? - Forget I asked, I don't wanna know.
  11. Might be worth a follow-up visit with the Dr in light of the family hx of reactions. With being his first sting and reacting the way he did, his next sting could be much more severe. Your Dr may consider allergy testing etc.
  12. As the saying goes, been there, done that, bought the t-shirt. Get away, as fast as you can - another opportunity will arise.
  13. Chinese food place in our city - Fuk Yu
  14. I would have loved if my spouse was sent on this type of errand while I was laboring- he drove me crazy!
  15. Managers should not be requesting a medical note every single time someone is ill. But part of a corporate attendence management program may request that once an employee is flagged as having an attendence problems (more than average), medical documentation may be requested. However, some of the hard nosed managers from the dark ages still believe in and request a note with every sick day. A huge waste of money and a ridiculous waste of physician and employee's time. Under an attendence management program, failure to produce requested medical documentation maybe deemed as insubordination and lead down the progressive discipline path towards dismissial. I've seen this in both union and non-union environments. Attendence management is growing and is getting more and more recognition - but common sense must still prevail.
  16. Under privacy and protection laws, you don't need to give the reason for illness - only that you are ill and will not be at work. The manager has the right to request medical information to be provided - but again, that should not contain confidential medical information, only that you attended medical attention and the duration of your absence. Medical information should only be shared amoung the persons with a medical interest in your particular instance (your physician and the work site occupational health department). Your manager is acting in the role of human resources and is only privy to the information that you are under a doctor's care and the date of return to duty.
  17. I remember my youngest doing the same - holding it for days until he started getting sick. He actually start to cry if his bowels moved while sitting on the potty. I think he was scared to use "the potty" as he definitely didn't have problems soiling his diapers. I knew if he could just go once - the fear would go away so I bought him some bubbles and made it a game that he could sit on the potty and blow bubbles while we waited. His very vigorous bubble blowing and laughing caused him to strain enough that he pooped - never had a problem with him again and it worked on the first try.
  18. A 9 month pregnant 19 yo, rollover MVA. Caught under vehicle with dripping radiator fluid onto her face, neck, chest, arms. She knew her baby had died and laid there trapped for about an hour until resuced. Baby was delivered spontaneously on route to emergency. She woke up with no lips, nose, one ear and no baby. We all cried over that one.
  19. saw hundreds of those - turns acute hospital care into a holding unit for long term care placement. after working a long weekend and having several "dumps" admitted - it was very easy to get bitter. nursing home beds are very short here and getting a ltc admission would often mean we had them on the acute ward for months...
  20. Put my bra on inside out (don't even know why I didn't realize it will putting it on) - but didn't realize it until end of day when I couldn't un-do it! Another time at work, the underwire in my bra broke loose and sneaked up through the V-neck in my scrub top. I didn't notice it until it curled out almost the entire way - poking me in the chin! Tina
  21. Leave your ego at home - nothing is harder to deal with than a new grad with "grad-itis" that think they know everything. The art of Nursing is rarely something learned from a book! There is no dumb questions, ever - and if you don't like an answer, verify with someone else. Trust your gut. Enjoy your patients and allow them to see the kind, caring person you are. Sick people don't want the ever professional, cold hearted nurse - they want someone who feels and understands. Feel free to share light-hearted personal stories with your patients - you'll know the ones that really enjoy keeping up with the outside world. Don't be afraid to share your grief with a family/friends in need. They will truely care that their loved one was so special to those that cared for them to the end.
  22. Ditto on the multiple colds and flus over the years. Had a really scary thing happen once - admitted a 20 something male with suspected necrotizing fascitis. Cared for this fellow for 4 hours, until end of shift. Woke up the next day with a raging case of cellulitis of one breast. I was at my doctor so fast and he had me on antibx fast with a huge loading dose.
  23. Congratulations to all those "old" nurses, new nurses and nurses2b on Nurse's Day. Does your employer do anything special to recognize this day?
  24. bandage scissors, tiny curved iris scissors, TAPE, swabs and the O2 connectors. I've also brought home a watch that wasn't mine - returned the next day.
  25. Now that I've stopped laughing and my eyes are drying up - I've forwarded to almost everyone I know to share the laughs. Thanks for the post.
