  1. Length of employment

Nursing seems like a revolving door at times. Just out of curiosity, how long have you been with your current employer?
  2. Hospice oriented staff position

This would be so very helpful! Soo many people (including doctors, nurses & social workers) do not understand what hospice means.
  3. Excited about night shift in LTC

I transitioned to nights about 6 months ago due to changes taking place in nursing. Now I get to do what nurses should be doing patient care! There is very little input taken from night shift assessments on my unit otherwise it is SOOO much less st...
  4. Heres one .....My husband asked if we should get tickets to see Rush in ATL on May 26 the same date of my daughter's 16 birthday. It was a tough one for sure. My dear daughter will probably only spend a few minutes doing the obligatory meal and ca...
  5. Would you quit over white uniforms?

Uterine Ablation....Soo very worth it for me. It saved me from all the clothing disasters and from the weakness.
  6. Changes and frustrations

I hear you & I have no current plans to endure a bridge program. You must have very thick skin to handle the job for sure. The educational requirements are ridiculously high for other careers too. Many with a Masters make less than 50k yearly. ...
  7. Changes and frustrations

In my geographical area LPNs are currently being systematically stripped of our duties. First was changes in performing minor procedures that were no longer policy. Next came a push to notify the house supervisor (RN) do assessments prior to contact...
  8. Changes and frustrations

We've basically been told the MD and NPs want to communicate with RNs only. The overall plan of organization is not communicated to the floor nurses. I've literally sat beside my RN supervisor while they relayed what I was telling them to the NP. ...
  9. Would you quit over white uniforms?

I am actually required to wear white. It makes me feel like a psych nurse (and I'm not). Takes a lot of oxyclean, clorox and under clothing to look decent. They also help me to slip into my angel nursey personna more easily than other colors. It i...
  10. I'm an LPN and I understand.

I know.... It's senseless...I gotta take my pay and forget about it. My idealism is gonna do me in ...aaaggghh.
  11. Night shift weight loss help

Love this advice! I put one 25 lbs in 6 months working nights. I think shifting eating this way will make a huge difference for me. Thanks for sharing.
  12. I'm an LPN and I understand.

The current trend for LPNs may not be new in your area, but it most definitely is in mine. In the past 5 years I've gone from being the only one in the facility (or only LPNs) after 4 pm and handling all that encompasses. Now fast forward to today a...
  13. People really need to stop coming into nursing

And did I mention "ability to communicate in accurate English"? That inability scares me a lot. A better-educated professional is a more effective one. Thanks. I appreciate that you caught my mistake. Being super detailed makes a great nurse. :)
  14. People really need to stop coming into nursing

YES! I would be greatly concerned if my grade schooler had trouble with that. That scares me ....ALOT.
  15. Length of employment

I began work as an LPN 6 years ago. The first couple years were spent gaining skill in LTC with a private company. The next two were spent in hospice learning how to deal with death. Now I've settled in with a larger LTC with a corporate structure. ...
  16. Length of employment

    I'll chime in first....2 years 1 month
  17. Want to hear your pet peeves in LTC nursing

LOVE this one: management by crisis! That's such an excellent way to describe the whole problem! Every single frustration in LTC could be solved by setting policy, sticking to it, laying off the ones who really don't want a job and allowing the ones ...
  18. Skin Care Protocol/Assessments

Weekly skin assessment by the charge nurse is routine. That way preventive tx can be implemented. The skin checks should ideally be on the TAR.
  19. do you wash your hair every day?

I scrub daily with whatever conditioner I find on sale...will shampoo 1 x week or so. Germs do not creep me out. My focus is on healthy eating and taking quality probiotics (although not sure if they help hair).
  20. Alarms? Do they work?

I work nights and find myself helping the patient more often than finding them on the floor. Building layout, staffing levels etc. play a huge roll I'm sure. BTW my facility is staffed very well ....each CNA has between 12- 14 on nights with each n...
  21. Alarms? Do they work?

No experience with a "no alarm system" but have heard of others trying it with mixed results. Seems it would only be a part of what maintains safety. Would love to hear updates on how it works over time.
  22. Foot Care

Did you have an order for the olive oil? As long as skin is intact it should be OK with an order.
  23. Foot Care

    Oops ....A & D
  24. Foot Care

Olive oil or A&D ointment are what seems to work best for the shower schedule because it lasts longer. Inexpensive lotions contain alcohol and can be drying.
  25. As if I am not busy enough!

All these responses are so true.... What never ceases to amaze me is the fact that if I take time I don't have to hand hold family it all seems to work out ....most are just struggling to deal with not being able to help and wanting to make sure I'm...
