How long do companies keep applications on non-hires
With the nursing shortage in America and the amount of unemployed nurses, I would say those companies delete applications like spam and shred paper applications to be made into toilet paper. Just my opinion.

Failed NCLEX
Dont be insane! I have worked with the some great nurses and they took the NCLEX several times. You have been out of nursing school for a while but to those going to take it, I say this: You have been in nursing school for 2-4 years. Don't waste your money on extra classes. Just read a NCLEx practice book once or twice and then take the NCLEX. Nursing loves taking your money. Don't let them. And for you....do not read the question tooooo much. Read the question. read the choices and answer whatever answer comes first and move along. Dont worry if the one next to you leaves in 5 minutes, just keep going. In nursing school there were people with 100+grades. When they hit the floor though they could not prioritize a dressing change to chest pain. Best of luck to you.

Rehab needs to get a clue
I think the story is alot deeper than just a pain med.
-
Rehab needs to get a clue
I had a physical therapist tell me all these problems with a resident and it was something that should have been called to the doctor. I asked the PT if she could call the doctor because she could explain it better and also because the information will get to the MD firsthand. She did call the doctor, that was great. But this almost never happens. Or PT wants to eval someone's walking ability and they come to me and say, "Ms. X wants to use the bathroom." If I were PT I would take them to the BR. Then PT wants to watch me take them to the BR! Hmmm, thats when I ask them to leave.

Rehab needs to get a clue
Yes, and it is worse when nurses report on nurses. Meanwhile you wonder why the eye drops are never even opened or last forever. The rehab aide now thinks they know more than you. Too much knowledge just creates monsters.

You and sally are one of those.....

Thank goodness for CNA's!!!
Thanks again to ALL CNA's. I was a CNA. I became a nurse because I was tired of all the lazy nurses. "Oh can you go in room 225 and empty the urinal." My Lord empty it yourself. I hope nurses all realize that the first semester of nursing school deals with being a CNA. Believe me I know everyone has things to get done but when a call bell is going off for 15 minutes and the nurse is documenting (which is important) she / he could get up and see what is going on. Maybe the call bell is going off because, "I need some ice." or maybe, "I am having a heart attack." Too many times I think nurses think call bells and such are not their "job". Well, I got news for you, it is. So don't go walking around the floor for 15 minutes looking for a CNA for something that you could have done yourself in 5. The end.

Graduate in the Philippines to take NCLEX in California
for international graduates it says. submit copy of license or diploma of the country you were educated in. there is no way to take nclex without a diploma or license from another country.i think you need a social security number also.

Graduate in the Philippines to take NCLEX in California
go back to the philippines and get all the information. or take the boards there. that would be a lot alot cheaper than the tuition i paid here in the united states to go to nursing school.

Reporting Errors
FYI: go to any and all state board disciplinary actions and see what nurses get disciplined for, from the mundane to serious. it is the mundane that disturbs me.

Reporting Errors
do what you think is right and necessary. pt gets 2 multivitamin-not a problem, patient gets 100units of regular insulin instead of 10-well somewhere along the the day like very soon, this patient is going to be foaming at the mouth and seizing, patient gets med that theyre allergic to-well they may or may not have reaction, i could go on and on. these patients trust you. their lives are in your hands, remember that. if you gave wrong med 1st time, i would talk to you maybe, maybe, even the 2nd time but after that you are a problem and we need to understand why. if it continues you will destroy yourself.learn from your mistakes. this is something i was taught, "bad habits become routine" dont get into bad habits. Watch out:there are nurses that will hang you for the most trivial thing. When reporting things there IS a difference between reporting it and going out of your way to tell on someone else. here is my story- a nurse one time left me a patients crushed meds to give. it had a narcotic in it.(the nurse had a personal emergency) when i went to give it there was NO narcotic in the med crushed or otherwise. i've seen and given tons of crushed meds, it aint in there. so the next time i saw her again(next day) i told her never to lie to me, she knew what she did and did not lie. i am not going to have my co-worker lose their career or life even BUT i am not going to lose mine.some nurses would say i should have reported her and destroyed her life. if she had lied to me i would have made it known.it is hard... i certainly dont advocate stealing but i dont advocate destroying others lives.and believe me the patients are very important to me but so are my co-workers. another story-i had 6of 14 patients all getting blood sometime within my shift and the next shift.variuos levels of consents and labs were done. 4 all had same blood type and 2 were getting blood on my shift in the same room. i went and got blood and checked it with a nurse but not at bedside.i walked to patient(the wrong one) and gave blood.management asked who i checked blood with. i would not give the name because it was my fault.i knew the policy and i hung the blood. we all knew the policy.it was busy, we each had 14 patients on night shift.that will never ever happen again. but one can never say never. did i learn from that? oh yeah very much!just do the best you can and never hesitate to ask for help! God bless!

Reporting Errors
near miss...as in the 10 mile wide asteroid was a near miss to planet earth. it missed, we are here, nothing happened. but if its something that can be improved you should send an anonymous letter because if you dont then management will make sure you are not a near miss to be fired.

What are the main things you can get written up for ?
hmmm...go read on any states nursing board and see what nurses lose their licenses for. there are cases ranging from stealing morphine to holding colace. if the powers that be want to get you...they will get you. so avoid being written up by following policy (however idiotic the policy is). I think some insane government agency says "all falls are preventable". all-100%.maybe that is true in a hospital in heaven but here on earth it just aint so. but if you dont want to get written up for the mundane then accept the policy as true. then you should be fine.
-
What will you do?
give the med with lidocaine. patient could be allergic to dust on Mars. patient is NKA.
-
What will you do?
the patient was NKA.
-
New nurse still on orientation and first med error?
and also dont trust any nurses. you dont need their trust. just do your work and you should be fine. if you need help then ask someone is fine and the right thing to do.but trusting that this one or that one will do this or that...forget about it. dont let trust cause you to lose your license.
-
New nurse still on orientation and first med error?
anyway some experienced nurse probably gave this patient a warm pack but if it did cause a problem you will be the only one to fall.
-
New nurse still on orientation and first med error?
this story makes me not want to reposition or fluff up a pillow without an order.
-
New nurse still on orientation and first med error?
your preceptor should have made you put a line through your note and initial it. there is no such thing as nursing judement. you need an order to do things. although you will see nurses do things without orders and get orders later. i would rather have an order for anything because no one is going to back you up.
