Do honor societies make a difference?
Possibly the selection process is different at the state universities..I am a community college student and I am a member of PTK (Phi Theta Kappa) honor society - I can't speak for others, but as for my experience being in this honor society, it did not make 2 cents worth of a difference on my application as plenty of students are admitted into our ASN program w/o being a member of it ..but I can say this...it sure looks good hangin' on my wall! LOL Our program like so many others is very competitive - the wait list is terrible, so after two previous application processes, I just found out I am #13 on the alternate list for the upcoming January program..rah..will see how that goes. Congratulations on your acceptance into DEI tho! I would think they would look more at the fact that you have documented shadowing hours but ..IMO, it never hurts to put the HS on the application - it is a hard earned accomplishment that you've been recognized for..:) so I would be sure to list it in your letter or app. Good luck to you! Lisa

What was the cost of your LPN school
hello all..just got my acceptance letter today from the school i will be attending here in jacksonville, fl (fccj) along with the financial/cost info. in-state tuition for me will run $2892.50 - this is for an 11 mos. program - 3 semesters. there are other costs to factor in as well such as state licensure exam processing fee, books, uniforms, steth - etc...which adds up to quite a bit..so i would say grand total is a little over 4100.00 with the odds and ends figured in also. lisa the late bloomer

Am I too old
Congratulations!! and you are going to do so well!! :) I am 47 and hoping to post soon that I rec'd my acceptance letter also for our FALL LPN Program! :) I truly feel that we limit ourselves if we embrace that idea that "I'm to old"..I know in most of my classroom settings we have had such a variety in age ranges...we had one lady who is 60 in my micro class going for her RN and doing great ..I just love her outlook on life. LPN Career Options/Pay in Jacksonville, FL?
hello...i also posted this on the "florida" board but hoping to get some feedback from anyone that works as an lpn here in the jacksonville, fl area. i actually live in a small town called middleburg (near orange park) which is on the outskirts of jacksonville ....anyhooo... i am considering going for my lpn due to the fact that the waiting lists for the rn programs are a fairly long wait in this area..i am in my last class (micro) that will finish out my prereqs for the asn ..i also know it will be a good year from now ..possibly two (2) before i even get in the program - and then at least another 16 - 18 mos of nursing classes after i am in...in the meantime, i know i need to get a j-o-b soon..lol dh and i were discussing getting my lpn first since it is an 11 mos program here which begins in august at fccj - then bridging to the rn or possibly going for my bsn while working as an lpn..fyi, i have already applied for the lpn program - however, probably won't know until the end of july if i am accepted...if i am not, then i guess that solves that..lol but..if i am (and i am hoping that is the case!) ..is their anyone on here that can shed some light on where lpn's can work in this area? are they basically employed in ltc?.... and do you know if lpn's are hired in our local hospitals? also..for someone just out school..what is the avg. rate of pay in the jacksonville area for an lpn? i did see on the shands site that starting pay for their lpn's is around 12.05? :uhoh21: that seems very low to me..but maybe it is more universal here than i thought. thanx for any feedback that can be offered on lpn career options and rate of pay.

Topic: Venting in Private?
nursie30, i am so sorry this happened to you...no matter what was said by you, it takes a person with zero class to do this sort of thing - we should all be able to share on the forums w/o worry of someone trailing where you've been and using it against you...sending prayers that life will start looking up for you very soon. normally folks that do this have alot of sweeping behind their own back door to do..but for some reason seem to enjoy riding that broom rather than cleaning up their own act. take care.

Do you wear makeup?
i am still in prereq phase - not in any clinical settings as yet, but even then, i would wear still some makeup just to look alive and have some color on my face..i do not like the tired look on me which is how i appear when i do not have any makeup applied to my face.

CNA to RN
Hello! At the CC I attend in North Florida, admittance to the program is geared to how many points you have acquired (mostly thru your grades)..for those applying to the nursing program, a CNA (EMT & LPN also) is awarded an extra 20 points on their application..whew..thinking I should get that certificate just for the clinical and points value alone before I apply! :)
