  1. I am so impatient and can't believe that not everything can be done online! So, we pay the GA BON $60 to endorse us, we pay NurSys $30 to send verification of our license, and then pay Cogent $50? Awesome. I really wouldn't care, if I could do it all online...immediately. Here's my issue, I cannot figure out GA's Cogent website. I seriously feel a bit...Corky. I was hoping someone could offer me a bit of guidance. Reading this might have helped a bit. Is the Agency/Agency Head my local police station?! Do you see how confused I am!? OMG. Please send help. And a margarita.
  2. Upon starting my unit, we were offered either straight night shifts (12 hour shifts) or rotating months (again, 12 hours). I chose rotational in an attempt to get on to days more quickly. I do 2 months of nights, and then 2 months of days and so on. I know this is probably different from what you're asking, though.:)
  3. 1. When did you graduate? December 2009 2. Do you have a BSN or ADN? ADN (with Honors) 3. Are you still looking for work? No, thank god. 4. If not, how long did it take you to find a job? 7 frickin' months 5. If you don't mind my asking, those who are working, what type of job or floor do you work on. ICU- Medical (i precepted on the floor, but it still took a lot to get the job. The hospital got a grant and started a Graduate Nurse program.)
  4. So, I started a grad. nurse program in July and I have my first 12 hour shift with my preceptor tomorrow. I precepted in IMC back in December for my final semester of nursing school for 60 hours already. We have had 2 8 hour days on our unit already, but I'm still nervous. Excited, but nervous. It's a big unit- 32 beds. I am so SO grateful to have a job right now, and also within critical care. This opportunity will not be offered to grads in the future. I graduated in December of '09, and I was not willing to work anywhere but a hospital. I was hired in June for this position- YAY! The pay is so not great (especially during the 3 months of "training"), but it's steady and it's a job! Hopefully, I, too, can check back in 3 months and be loving my job. Congrats!
  5. I would just like to add a friendly bump to this post. I'm interested as well.
  6. i when one starts living in my house, i name him. always a guy's name too, like 'stan'.
  7. my take- i think rnwotwob1 may have been turned down for a job b/c he only had an ADN and perhaps another applicant with either A. more experience, B. a BSN, or C. both may have gotten the job. let's keep in mind that few places are hiring nurses in central florida, let alone new graduates! halifax has ZERO job listings! nothing administrative, nothing clericla, nothing clinical...ZERO. florida hospital seems to have plenty of listings though. anyone have the time energy to copy/paste NCLEX pass rates from DBCC, oh excuse me, daytona state ;)and surounding schools. p.s. i graduate from daytona in december!
  8. actually, florida schools now rank 10th nationally! this is such great news! http://www.tampabay.com/news/education/article960721.ece
  9. i'm only a student now, but i'll weigh in. i lived in upstate ny for 11 years and i've been in eastern central florida for 18. florida is home. ny is great to visit, but man, florida is home. you don't like it? *shrug* leave. disclaimer: this might all change once i'm actually working as a nurse.
  10. omg, at 5:30 i try to throw it back with a headband and then a pony, or use a claw cliip for a 1/2 french twist. sometimes i'll kinda do two 1/2 french twists- imagine pigtails placed towards the back of your head (rather than by your ears) then twist each one up separately. works well with shoulder-length hair. get this- during ob, my instructor told me to wear my hair down. she mentioned my tragus and rook piercings and said they have to be covered up. i asked if a band-aid would be okay. the first day i wore one, she told me to take off the band-aid and just wear my hair down to cover my ears. *shrug* works for me. p.s. i cannot believe how strict and archaic some programs are. your hair accessory must match your hair? egad.
  11. my instructors had no problem writing out three letters of recommendation for me. this is nursing school, not fashion merchandising.
  12. dress comfortably. i live in florida and work nights. getting up at 5:30 am for class was pure torture. i actually did wear my pajama pants one day. i usually threw on a pair of jeans, a t-shirt, comfy undies (you will be sitting for many hours) and NO br and a pair of 'flops. i need comfort, not fidgeting. makeup sometimes helped me from not falling asleep- i didn't wanna mess everything up, so i'd sit up straight and not rub my eyes. =D everyone's different, though. when peds came around, class didn't start until 12:30pm (sweet!), but i had to head to work right after. so that semester, i always had my hair and makeup done and dressed decently. wear whatever you feel comfortable in, but i didn't start slumming it until we were a couple of weeks in. p.s. my uniform for clinicals was always perfect and always looked presentable!
  13. sounds like you need a new man and some new friends! people who should love you should encourage you! you'll find out how "competitive" it is when you go speak with an advisor. that is for *you* to worry about. p.s. an associate's degree in business administration amounts to hmmm...nothing. that degree and $1.25 will get ya a bus ticket! and your husband thinks you're dumb, b/c you stay at home all day? he's the one who leaves to go off to work and then gives money to you. you've got a good set up! sorry to sound harsh, but dude, go for it! promise to come back here and tell us how you rubbed it in both their faces when you get your first "a"!!!
  14. i will be graduating from dbcc- oops, excuse me, daytona state this fall. great schoo, amazing instructors, imo. just get ready for the roller coaster ride!!!
  15. HA! if you can handle this descriptive thread, you'll be fine. eventually. i graduate in december, and i was gung-ho about the o.r. even orthopedic o.r.! guess who had to be escorted out when a central line was being placed in our o.r. patient! but, i got some more food in me, and went right back in.
  16. hee hee. i like you, dolcevita! band together, bitter nursing students! *cat fight sounds* ugh, i think there is only one student who i would have loved to chop her in the throat- just once. luckily, that was only our 6 week peds class!
  17. I graduate in December, but I am plagued by anxiety (dr.- 0.25mg alprazolam please!!!). I live in cental Florida and hiring freezes are in full swing- even with a new hospital being built and another one adding on. Go figure. My biggest problem is I have no healthcare experience...I sling drinks for a living, b/c that's what pays the bills. I'm worried that after school and with the influx of graduates, I will struggle finding a job. I will hold on to my bartending job though. I also plan to go right back into school to get another degree. I don't think I feel comfortable leaving my job search in the hands of a "higher power". It all rests on me...just like the money for rent, utilities bill, groceries, gas, etc. all rests on me. Good luck to all those current grads on a job hunt!!!
  18. I will be the first student to be disappointed that in only got a 90 when a 94 is needed for an "a"! Firstly, I am highly competitive, but only with myself. I never boast to classmates, until someone asks. I work for these grades and I'm d@mn proud! Secondly, i need that "a" to maintain a high gpa to be considered for scholarships and furthering my degree. Lastly, it's too bad that someone isn't passing the class, but not to sound callous, there's a reason why that student is struggling. Grades are earned. P.S. Oh god, every time I get the highest grade, I am smiling the smuggest little smile inside!! Keep in mind, I'm also always willing to help others study and quiz them. I know, I know- i'm oh so mature! =D I am too dumb and lazy to fix different-sized fonts when posting from my phone, though!!!
  19. ahhh, i love community college! i work as a bartender, but still need help financially. i qualify for federal financial aid (subsidized stafford loans), but i'm really hoping for a pell grant this year. also, i always apply for donor scholarships through my school. i am crossing my fingers for this semester!! i actually have about 2 g's in stafford loans already (3/4 of the way doen with a ba in philosophy...and then i got bored). so, that's all the *school* debt i have, as of right now.
  20. Not to quibble, but plenty of large chain retailers sell "long and lean" tanks. Also many are following the trend of draping, loose shirts. Belly-baring shirts are actually somewhat passé, IMO. Check yer local Old Navy or Target. I'm fun-sized so I can offer no help for those 6'-ers, except for checking ONLINE!!
  21. heh heh. maybe they should all have been wearing "mom jeans". clicky and appreciate:
  22. wow. there's this great "club" in the area, i think you'll fit right in. just grab your whitest bedsheets (cross burning is optional). you say there is a distinct lack of culture, and then you put down the hispanic AND african-american culture (in one sentence, which is impressive). i respect the culture, music and food that the puerto rican, mexican, african american, caribbean peoples have brought to florida. let us not forget the heavy vietnamese culture in orlando, as well (mmm, pho!). and due to so many transplanting to florida from the northeast, there is plenty of anglo-saxon influence (hello winter park!). i truly enjoy florida, and i believe the state is what one makes of it. p.s. i'm from upstate new york. :)
  23. thank you, scraig, for some soothing words. i've been hearing about a frightening amount of hiring freezes, but i hope the situation will be somewhat alleviated by december. i also just checked job listings for bert fish, and they have several rn positions open, even for those w/o experience.
  24. i think the argument that students cheat on tests might have led to our economical recession is a somewhat ad hoc fallacy. i have yet to witness cheating in my classes. but, i'm also completely consumed while taking a test. i don't look up, and my face is 4 inches away from my test. interesting to see how dumb i'll look if i try to do that with the nclex. =d if i was witness to some blatant academic dishonesty, i would perhaps anonymously inform the instructor to pay closer attention. i don't believe it is the student body's responsibility to police their peers. teachers should be vigilant during testing and also while reading papers (although, it kinda sucks they have to...). [color=dimgray]pssssttt...what did you get for question #49?
