  1. I agree!!!! I went through many stages dealing with my grief and guilt over this pt! At one point I even remember thinking, 'why did she wait SO long to come see us!?' and 'why didn't she go to the ER?!' It's just so sad when this happens...I'm sure many of the people in her life have thought/felt the same. The only positive I can take from the situation was that I definitely learned a lot. As you said, now ANYTIME someone comes in with those symptoms I will be more prepared!
  2. I completely understand!!!! I too am a nursing student, but I also work at an urgent walk-in clinic. A few months ago I had pt come in who was experiencing dizziness, fatigue, and SOB. I was able to get all of her vitals which were fairly normal but about 15 minutes after she arrived she crashed on us. We ended up sending her to ER via an ambulance and found out later that evening that she had passed away from a pulmonary embolism. I was devastated. I cried most of the evening. I asked everyone if there was anything I personally could have done to save her. She was very young-a few years younger than myself! Still to this day, I have a hard time when I think about it, but the truth is, there wasn't anything I could have done- I did my job and I have to keep my chin up and move on. It's a really hard lesson to learn sweetie but it happens to the best of us in this field. Don't be too hard on yourself and God Bless!!!
  3. I love them! Great job!!!! :yelclap:
  4. I am a full time ADN student! Our schedule is the same for our first year: Mondays Tests 12-1 Lecture 1-5. Then we go get our clinical assignments from 5-6. Most of Mondayevening/night is spent working on care plans! Tuesdays Clinical 5:45am-12. Post clinical conferences 1-3 Wednesdays Lecture 12-5 Thursdays Lab 8-12:30 Fridays Off! I spend about 2 hours a night on reading/studying. I usually take Fridays off (for my sanity!) and I always go to a study group on Sunday nights for a couple hours to prep for Monday's tests! The reason we have Mon, Wed, Fri mornings off is because many students are also taking science/general ed classes those days! Hope this helps you! PS- I am also married and have two little boys! It's hard to take so much time away from them but if you have a good support system you can handle it!!! Just remember, it's only temporary!!!
  5. Wow! I knew the job market was competitive but I didn't realize it would be SO difficult! I am currently living in Nebraska and I suppose we are in a bit of an economic "bubble" because new grads here have very little problem finding jobs. That said, the main reason I went back to school was to help support my family so we could move down to FW where my family lives. :heartbeat In your opinions, would I be better off getting some experience under my belt before making the move? Would a year or so really make that much of a difference?
  6. Hi all! Question for my DFW nurses. I don't live in the area but plan to move there when I graduate. As a new grad (ADN) what do I need to do to (help) insure I will be able to get a job when I graduate? Also, are all new grads forced into med surg as a first job? My ultimate goal is L&D. Any advice will be greatly appreciated!
  7. Thanks all! I was kinda wondering if it was a lot of hype... I had a lot of people freak me out about chemistry and ended up loving the class and getting an A+! So now I'm wondering this: for those of you who have taken it and nursing classes, do you think taking stats with first semester nursing classes is a bad idea? Is it too much? I don't want my grades to take a hit...
  8. The question pretty much says it all... I'm taking statistics this fall along with my first semester nursing classes and everyone I tell this to says, "REALLY? You're taking stats too?!?!?! Good luck with that!!!!" Can anyone give me a heads up? Math isn't really my favorite subject but I don't exactly struggle with it either. I know the teacher and he comes highly recommended! I have to take the class at some point (for my bachelors) but it's not required for my associates degree. Thanks so much for any advice! You guys are the best!
  9. BTW, if anyone is interested in seeing the average RN salary in their area, here is a great website to look at! http://monster.salary.com/
  10. Our program is designed so we have Mon/Wed/Fri mornings off in case people have other non-nursing classes that need to be taken. We have clincial on Tuesdays mornings from 6:30-3:30.
  11. Oh, and I'm not working. But I do have two kiddos (5 yrs and 8 yrs).
  12. Thanks guys! Self-sabotage is exactly what I am concerned about. Mostly for my GPA because I want to go on and get my masters. The english class would be online and I know the teacher and she is fantastic. The math class would be 3 days a week in the morning and again, I've had the teacher and he is good. The only hole in my vision is the nursing classes. I'm just not sure what to expect...
  13. Hello all! I start nursing school this fall (August 24th! Woot woot! ) It's an associate degree program and the nursing classes alone add up to 9 credit hours per semester. I plan on going on immediately and getting my BSN so I would like to finish my additional classes needed to complete it while I'm taking my ADN classes. Sooo, my question is this: how many credits are too many while attending nursing school? I would like to take stats and english comp 2 this fall..that's an additional 6 credits which would take me to 15. Too much? Thanks for any advice you all may have! I really value your expert opinions!
  14. It does! Thank you! But what if you don't know the mass such as in the question I posted? How do I find the mass?
  15. Hey guys! I am TOTALLY frustrated because I do NOT get how to do specific heat problems!!! My teacher pretty much mentioned it in passing and now expects us to know how do it! I have been checking websites, reading in my study guide..you name it and I still don't get it!!! Can someone please explain this to me? Also, one of my homework problems asks about finding the mass with specific heat and I am lost there too!!! Please tell me there is a chem whiz in here that will have mercy on me and explain this concept and show me what I'm supposed to do!!!! :bowingpur Copper has a specific heat of 0.092 cal/(g x degrees c). When 52.7 cal of heat is added to a piece of copper, the temperature increases from 22.4 degrees c to 38.6 degrees c. What is the mass of the piece of copper? Any help is MUCH appreciated!!!! :heartbeat
