Patient died...
I agree!!!! I went through many stages dealing with my grief and guilt over this pt! At one point I even remember thinking, 'why did she wait SO long to come see us!?' and 'why didn't she go to the ER?!' It's just so sad when this happens...I'm sure many of the people in her life have thought/felt the same. The only positive I can take from the situation was that I definitely learned a lot. As you said, now ANYTIME someone comes in with those symptoms I will be more prepared!

Patient died...
I completely understand!!!! I too am a nursing student, but I also work at an urgent walk-in clinic. A few months ago I had pt come in who was experiencing dizziness, fatigue, and SOB. I was able to get all of her vitals which were fairly normal but about 15 minutes after she arrived she crashed on us. We ended up sending her to ER via an ambulance and found out later that evening that she had passed away from a pulmonary embolism. I was devastated. I cried most of the evening. I asked everyone if there was anything I personally could have done to save her. She was very young-a few years younger than myself! Still to this day, I have a hard time when I think about it, but the truth is, there wasn't anything I could have done- I did my job and I have to keep my chin up and move on. It's a really hard lesson to learn sweetie but it happens to the best of us in this field. Don't be too hard on yourself and God Bless!!!

I love them! Great job!!!! :yelclap:

What is a day in your life?
I am a full time ADN student! Our schedule is the same for our first year: Mondays Tests 12-1 Lecture 1-5. Then we go get our clinical assignments from 5-6. Most of Mondayevening/night is spent working on care plans! Tuesdays Clinical 5:45am-12. Post clinical conferences 1-3 Wednesdays Lecture 12-5 Thursdays Lab 8-12:30 Fridays Off! I spend about 2 hours a night on reading/studying. I usually take Fridays off (for my sanity!) and I always go to a study group on Sunday nights for a couple hours to prep for Monday's tests! The reason we have Mon, Wed, Fri mornings off is because many students are also taking science/general ed classes those days! Hope this helps you! PS- I am also married and have two little boys! It's hard to take so much time away from them but if you have a good support system you can handle it!!! Just remember, it's only temporary!!!

A ? For DFW Nurses!
Wow! I knew the job market was competitive but I didn't realize it would be SO difficult! I am currently living in Nebraska and I suppose we are in a bit of an economic "bubble" because new grads here have very little problem finding jobs. That said, the main reason I went back to school was to help support my family so we could move down to FW where my family lives. :heartbeat In your opinions, would I be better off getting some experience under my belt before making the move? Would a year or so really make that much of a difference?

A ? For DFW Nurses!
Hi all! Question for my DFW nurses. I don't live in the area but plan to move there when I graduate. As a new grad (ADN) what do I need to do to (help) insure I will be able to get a job when I graduate? Also, are all new grads forced into med surg as a first job? My ultimate goal is L&D. Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

What is so bad about STATS?
Thanks all! I was kinda wondering if it was a lot of hype... I had a lot of people freak me out about chemistry and ended up loving the class and getting an A+! So now I'm wondering this: for those of you who have taken it and nursing classes, do you think taking stats with first semester nursing classes is a bad idea? Is it too much? I don't want my grades to take a hit...

What is so bad about STATS?
The question pretty much says it all... I'm taking statistics this fall along with my first semester nursing classes and everyone I tell this to says, "REALLY? You're taking stats too?!?!?! Good luck with that!!!!" Can anyone give me a heads up? Math isn't really my favorite subject but I don't exactly struggle with it either. I know the teacher and he comes highly recommended! I have to take the class at some point (for my bachelors) but it's not required for my associates degree. Thanks so much for any advice! You guys are the best!

How many extra credits should I take?!
Our program is designed so we have Mon/Wed/Fri mornings off in case people have other non-nursing classes that need to be taken. We have clincial on Tuesdays mornings from 6:30-3:30.

How many extra credits should I take?!
Oh, and I'm not working. But I do have two kiddos (5 yrs and 8 yrs).

How many extra credits should I take?!
Thanks guys! Self-sabotage is exactly what I am concerned about. Mostly for my GPA because I want to go on and get my masters. The english class would be online and I know the teacher and she is fantastic. The math class would be 3 days a week in the morning and again, I've had the teacher and he is good. The only hole in my vision is the nursing classes. I'm just not sure what to expect...

How many extra credits should I take?!
Hello all! I start nursing school this fall (August 24th! Woot woot! ) It's an associate degree program and the nursing classes alone add up to 9 credit hours per semester. I plan on going on immediately and getting my BSN so I would like to finish my additional classes needed to complete it while I'm taking my ADN classes. Sooo, my question is this: how many credits are too many while attending nursing school? I would like to take stats and english comp 2 this fall..that's an additional 6 credits which would take me to 15. Too much? Thanks for any advice you all may have! I really value your expert opinions!

Specific Heat?! Please help!!!!
It does! Thank you! But what if you don't know the mass such as in the question I posted? How do I find the mass?
-
Specific Heat?! Please help!!!!
Hey guys! I am TOTALLY frustrated because I do NOT get how to do specific heat problems!!! My teacher pretty much mentioned it in passing and now expects us to know how do it! I have been checking websites, reading in my study guide..you name it and I still don't get it!!! Can someone please explain this to me? Also, one of my homework problems asks about finding the mass with specific heat and I am lost there too!!! Please tell me there is a chem whiz in here that will have mercy on me and explain this concept and show me what I'm supposed to do!!!! :bowingpur Copper has a specific heat of 0.092 cal/(g x degrees c). When 52.7 cal of heat is added to a piece of copper, the temperature increases from 22.4 degrees c to 38.6 degrees c. What is the mass of the piece of copper? Any help is MUCH appreciated!!!! :heartbeat

Chemistry HELP!!!
Hi everyone, I am in desperate need of some explaining!!! We have our first chem lab today and I have a pre-lab assignment I'm just NOT getting!!! (I swear he hasn't gone over any of this stuff in class yet) So the first thing we had to do was calculate the volume of ice and water, which I did. Ice: (mass) 1.000/(density) 0.9168= (volume)1.090750436 Water (mass) 1.000/(density) 0.9999= (volume)1.00010001 The next question is this: A sealed glass container with a capacity of exactly 100mL contains 96.0 mL of liquid water a 0 degrees C. If the water freezes, will the container rupture? I'm really confused because doesn't water freeze at 0 degrees C? So how can water be at a liquid state at this temp? I'm not sure what the answer is or how to answer it!! Ughhh I also do not know how to answer the following question: A perfect cube of aluminum metal was found to weigh 20.00 g. The density of aluminum is 2.70 g mL -1. What are the dimensions of the cube? I would ask my teacher but we're expected to hand this in when we get to lab today... Can someone please show me how to do these problems?!?! Thanks SOO much for any and all help!!

How do you wear your hair for clinicals?
I've been hearing that our clinical instructors are super picky about our appearance at clinicals (As they should be!). Our hair cannot touch our collars but I'm afraid that a ponytail may be looked down on as being sloppy?! I want to look like I care about my appearance but I don't want to spend a long time in doing my hair when I have to be there at 5:30 am!!! Any ideas?

Is Survey of Chemistry really THAT bad?
I posted this in the General Forum and then thought, this is more of a pre-nursing question! (Duh!) lol I know organic isn't a lot of fun, but I'm just going to be taking Survey of Chem 1... Pretty basic stuff right? I've been avoiding chem because I DO NOT want to take it but now I'm looking at the syllabus and it doesn't seem terrible! I mean it's only the first 8 chapters in the book. Just wondering the opinion of someone who has actually taken it! Thanks all!!!

Is survey of chem really THAT bad?
Thank you SO much for your response! I went down and met the teacher because it's his first year with the college so I couldn't ask around to see what he was like. :) He seems great. He told me that as long as I study there's no reason I can't get a good grade in his class. I hope he is right!
