CT Supreme Court Decision: Teen can't refuse Chemo
FORCING a patient??? Seventeen isnt a child, and as a cancer patient this girl has to face multiple decisions already. THIS is so wrong...the state dictating. This is only a slippery slope folks. Next thing will be the state enforcing everyone over 80 drinking the red kool aid as it is their best interest. UGH!!!

WHY do employers that give 2-3 days orientation require a month's notice of resignati
Indiana is a "at will state"... which means a facility can fire someone without notice or even good cause. It's used as a veiled threat...no job security. It also works going the other direction, someone can quit without notice. Employers hate it when they pull the "two wk notice" routine, and the reply is "Indiana is at will".

I want to SCREAM, no job yet!!
Same thing is happening in Indiana. LPN's getting the cush "clinic jobs" because they cost less. I'm an RN, never thought I'd be scrambling for work.

LTC is so wrong for me...should I go? Help!
I've been in home health until the econ tanked, then I was laid off. Since then it's been a struggle to find satisfactory work that wont need up killing me. I'm pushing 60 yrs old, the days of running for hours are beyond me now. I've done LTC before, never lasted more than a few months...it just isnt me. I more than dislike passing pills to 15, 25, 30+ patients at a time, chasing those patients down who then complain they didnt get it on time. Forget the other headaches on top of that. Anyhow..the point being, when I recently hired into this super nice place I very specifically explained I was seeking a Healing Touch Nurse position as I have earned my credentials. The DON response was that is why she's hired me. Wonderful. :) Unfortunately, things arent progressing rapidly enough ,most recent comment is another 3-4 months. In the interim I've been working the floor which is starting to raise my BP, the migraines are returning...just ugh! It's only every other weekend, how ever, its becoming a mental and physical stress. I've spend 10 yrs and a few thousand dollars to earn my HTI credentials, this is what I want to do. I dont want to work the floor, Would the wise course to speak to the DON, and request she takes me off the schedule? and when the facility is ready for HT, start back then? I dont want to technically quit... however LTC is just not for me. Sorry this is so long winded... just ended to vent.

Unrestrained pittbull
Where does it state nurses arent to have RIGHTS FOR THEIR OWN SAFETY just because they're are a homehealth nurse? I've have always explained to my patients that any dog must be on a leash. If its a large aggressive type breed. *pitbull* then the dog is to be in another room behind a closed door before I would enter the home. I've had the "oh she's a sweetie" pitbull almost rip the closed bedroom door open as I was making my visit. No.. sorry..it dont fly. Patient's have a responsibility to provide a safe place for the nurse to visit.

Can you have a life AND do HH?
I have been in HH for 10 years. This last week was when the line was drawn into the sand, and I said enough was enough. The agency I work for is private owner/family run agency. Not such a bad idea, however there is never a let up on the demands. SOC and ROC complete.. and I mean the EVERYTHING in 24 turn around. Meeting following meeting following meeting...which naturally cuts into my time to be a nurse in the home, performing MY JOB! I regularly drive 75 miles daily, often just to see one patient. The management totally does not understand correlation between 3 hrs of drive time subtracts from charting. The stress at the office is effecting everyone. I , who has never had BP issues, is now on meds. The DON started smoking, and one of our schedulers landed in the hospital with BP 220/120!! Is home health a great field? Yep. However there MUST be a balance between job and one's life. I chose my life. I gave notice. I have other things to accomplish besides an early grave. I dont have another job lined up, other than work on building a HT client base. If I can work 12-16 hr days/ 6 days a wk for someone else, than I should be doing the same for myself Home health is a great field.. if there are boundaries.

Did the shut-down of Mobile Doctors affect you?
Indianapolis. Four of our pts were Mobile Doc. All the pts information, med list, H/P locked up. Fortunately another company is willing to take these onboard..however... 3-4 wks at least before the documentation is updated.

NM BON length of time for transferring license
Im planning to move to NM from the Midwest. NM is one state I am interested in. I've started reading all the requirements for getting license by endorsement from IND. IND is not compact, so I understand it will take longer. Does anyone have a ballpark idea how much time to expect for approval?

57 and need to start over YET AGAIN!
OH goodness the boat keeps getting bigger and bigger. I am 57 and was laid off following years of healthcare experienced. Cant return to college as I DID that when I was 45 yrs old. Earned my RN at 50 yrs old. Still another 5 yrs of the FIRST student loans to pay for. LTC is plan frightening when the ratio is 35/1. (Been there done that) I feel too old to start over... AGAIN.. and too young too.

A Call to Action from the Nation's Nurses in the Wake of Newtown
A LITTLE GUN HISTORY In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control. >From 1929 to 1953, about 20 million 'dissidents', unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated. Germany established gun control in 1938 and from 1939 to 1945, a total of 13 million Jews and others who were unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated. China established gun control in 1935. From 1948 to 1952, 20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated Guatemala established gun control in 1964. From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated. Uganda established gun control in 1970. From 1971 to 1979, 300,000 Christians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated. Cambodia established gun control in 1956. From 1975 to 1977, one million educated people, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated. Defenseless people rounded up and exterminated in the 20th Century because of gun control: 56 million. You won't see this data on the US evening news, or hear politicians disseminating this information. Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws adversely affect only the law-abiding citizens. Take note my fellow Americans, before it's too late! The next time someone talks in favor of gun control, please remind them of this history lesson. With guns, we are 'citizens'. Without them, we are 'subjects'. During WWII the Japanese decided not to invade America because they knew most Americans were ARMED! If you value your freedom, please spread this antigun-control message to all of your friends. SWITZERLAND ISSUES EVERY HOUSEHOLD A GUN! SWITZERLAND'S GOVERNMENT TRAINS EVERY ADULT THEY ISSUE A RIFLE. SWITZERLAND HAS THE LOWEST GUN RELATED CRIME RATE OF ANY CIVILIZED COUNTRY IN THE WORLD!!! IT'S A NO BRAINER! DON'T LET OUR GOVERNMENT WASTE MILLIONS OF OUR TAX DOLLARS IN AN EFFORT TO MAKE ALL LAW ABIDING CITIZENS AN EASY TARGET. Spread the word everywhere you can that you are a firm believer in the 2nd Amendment! It's time to speak loud before they try to silence and disarm us. You're not imagining it, history shows that governments always manipulate tragedies to attempt to disarm the people. Okay.. yes that was long winded. However it IS factual. The horrific nightmare was caused by a loner determined to inflict pain and suffering, if not by a armed weapon.. then some other means. And remember...he chose a GUN FREE ZONE, FULLY AWARE he faced NO resistance. It was ONLY when law enforcement showed up did he do us a favor, and took his own life. Guns are inanimate objects, incapable of self action. It takes a PERSON to cause harm. Its time to start seeing the forest instead of the trees. Time to reach out to PEOPLE whom are hurting and let them know they are cared for and valued. The human touch is needed... not another gun control law.

"Fee Basis" Exemption for Home Health Nurses
Yes, the pay per visit is a means to cheat nurses out of their rightfully due pay. The agency I worked for changed from hourly to pay per visit with the bold remark they were doing it 'so we dont have to pay overtime". Two very large national HHA have a class action suit filed against them for such ploys, Ameysis and Gentiva. There is a possibility a third company will be added to the list. It will be interesting to watch how HH will try to cover the backside when those cases get to court.

Obamacare Survives, Supreme Court Rescues 'Big Health'
I've spoken to several Canadians who've left Canada to seek medical attention..."from the USA broken system" They are all in horror in seeing what is happening here. Socialized medicine does not work.

Nursing: Not A Recession-Proof Career
Thank Goodness ... finally.. an article stating the current situation of nursing lay offs. I've been laid off since early February from homehealth agency. Last month I was hired PRN at a wound center. The unemployment office first remark was " Oh you're a nurse, you'll have no problems" It's a falsehood to promote nursing as recession proof.
