Thanks for the welcome! Being on the west coast will be quite a change for me. I've lived in Florida for 26 years and moved around on the East Coast mostly (except when I lived in Hawaii for 3 years) I am currently at George Mason University - it has the largest nursing program in the state of Virgina....I am about 2 semesters away from being finished with my pre-reqs. I don't care how I get it right now. I am almost 34 years old and I just want my RN right now. I plan on going all the way to MSN... but it would be nice just to get into the program. I am a former EMT, and I currently work for a doctor right now, assisting with injections and using the xray on the patients. I have a lot of medical background experience to guide me through. I've even done some phlebotomy work. I am hoping my previous experiences, and my GPA will help me a little bit. I am at a 3.74 right now, overall. I still need A&P but that's about it... I need to figure out what pre-reqs will be required in Cali. I've already taken Advanced Comp (ENGL 302 here), and BioMedical Ethics... (fun) I took Micro a long time ago, and taking Statisics this summer.

My boss (a doctor) smiled at me when I told him about my upcoming hectic schedule... Although he reassured me things would be fine, he also thinks I will be okay in A&P.... I am SOOO nervous about that class. I mean, I got 100 percent in Micro, and I have all As and Bs in my other classes.... but A&P appears to be very intimidating to me. Plus, they don't have the professors listed on who's teaching... Anyways, I am getting back to work. Hope to hear from you soon... Add me as a friend if you'd like. Thanks!

Girl - the world needs nurses. If you are ready and willing to do it, they are willing and ready to take you!!! I've met girls, women, boys, and men of all ages who are either interested or into nursing. You either will love it, or you wont. My 14 year old son wants to be a nurse, because he's seen the things I have studied (before as an EMT) and he's so struck by it he wants to follow in my footsteps. :) Good luck lady - and give us all youngin's a run for our money!!!!

Thanks for all of your posts.... it means alot to me. I keep trying to find online study groups, or rooms where I can ask others opinions on things. Right now I am taking BioMedical Ethics and Advance Composition... in a few short months it seems, I will be heading into A&P and a few other classes as I make my way towards nursing school. Wow.... I feel EXACTLY the same way you do. BioMedical Ethics is interesting, but I can't seem to grasp the depth of the philosophy being taught. I always understood ethics to be more "common sense" so all this extra hoop-la" is overwhelming me. Then there is my Advanced Composition. It's business based so they are going through a book in economics. SOO boring. I can't seem to focus in this class - and I am keeping a B average in it. Not what I want. I am trying my best to make it interesting, but it's just not working for me. If you want a "vent" buddy - I am right with you. I have an active 14 year old son, and a 12 year old step son. My mother lives with my husband and I since she is disabled (we take care of her).... so our plate is kinda full too. Plus I work full time. Ugh! :) I think we both need a hug.

Hi there, Thanks for responding. I am attending GMU right now for my pre-reqs. I am going for my BSN, since I already have an AA degree. Didn't want to get another associates if I can just go for the bachelor's you know? I am applying for GMU's nursing program for the fall of 2010. :) What classes are you taking, and where?

I've posted on here several times, and each time - received mostly no responses. I will post here one more time... maybe this time, I'll reach someone. I am a pre-nursing student. I am finishing up my pre-reqs and will be applying to the program hopefully this December or next January. I am just searching for someone who I can befriend. Someone who is already a nurse, a nursing student or even a fellow pre-nursing student. Where I live, I have tried Craigslist and even though there are lots of students in my school going towards the same goal - none seem to be interested in either making a friend to go through with this, or give advice and guidance. I love my family dearly, and I know they love me and are extremely supportive of what I am doing. However, as we all know - they will never fully understand the commitment, stress, and overall constraints of this journey. So if there are any willing participants who either want a friend to confide in, through email, online chat, phone conversation, or if you live near me even - we could meet up to study or whatever. Please feel free to respond.

CONGRATS!!!!! I am hoping for a seat for Fall 2010 myself!!! I won't know til next spring though (in 2010) I am VERY happy for you!!!!!!

GMU registration started November 3rd. My registration ticket was for November 14th... and yes all the classes I needed to take are filled up already. I am on a wait list.

Only one problem with that - the classes I need are upper division classes, not something I can take at the community collge. Plus, I have already paid all my fees at George Mason. With my limited income, I am not going to fork over extra cash for another school ... and lose my place at GMU. I am just disappointed that I need to take 8 more classes. It has nothing to do with how much it will cost me. Just means I wont get as much time with my 13 year old son before he moves back to his dads house this coming July... that's all.

Well, since i found out that I need 12 classes before I enter the BSN program instead of just 4.... I have NO clue what I am taking. Probably just one class in the spring, and 3-4 classes in the following three semesters.

So, today I find out GMU finally evaluated my transcripts... and I thought I only need 4 classes before applying to the BSN program... but now I need 12. SO - My option is to quit the medical assisting program I am in - and go to GMU full time in order to apply for the fall 2010 program as I fist planned.... I am stressing out here... and mentally exhausted. I am worried I wont be able to get into the classes I need when I need them. This totally stinks.

I wasn't talking to anyone in general - but to everyone in general. This is obvious a sore spot for everyone, whether they are defending their reasons, or voicing their frustrations. I am just saying whether you (meaning everyone) do it or don't.... It's not disrupting me because you aren't in my school. If your bring your phones in the class, I expect them on at least vibrate. I appreciate there there are a lot of working moms (and dads). I myself, at 33 am a mother of a 14 year old boy and I also care for my mother who is dependent on me. I have my own reasons for having my phone on vibrate in class. BUT, as a respecting adult, I make sure I do not disrupt anyone in class if something were to come up. So like I said.... if it bothers you (meaning everyone) - do something about it.

I am not in nursing school yet. I am in a vocational school for medical assisting... and there is a VERY small business office that closes at 5pm. My class is from 6-9pm and well the only way to reach any of us in an emgergency is through our personal cell phones. Heck, even our instructiors have theirs on vibrate. In my class - ALL are women... 35 women/girls and about 3/4's of them have small children. In fact, one woman just gave birth last week, and wow, she came back to class almost immediately. I think I would definitely have my phone available, (obviously on silent, or vibrate) if there was no other way to reach me ... especially if I had a 'days old' infant at home. I agree though - we should ALL agree to disagree on this subject. We are all attending different schools. We ALL have different instructors, different students. It all boils down to this "If the one person in YOUR class bothers you... do something about it. Confront the student, or tell the instructor." That's all there is to it. But lets stop badgering each other here, and judging each other on whether we think the people on this board are good people or not by how they act in class.

My name is Tami..... I wanted to say hi to all of you, and I totally respect you all for the job you are doing. I am a pre-nursing student myself, and hopefully will have my BSN in hand in 4 years. (2 years to get my pre-reqs, and 2 years for the degree) My son is inspired and also has an interest to be a nurse. It started when I became an EMT a few years ago. He's turning 14 on the 21st. If any of you have advice that I can give to him regarding school or what he can do in the mean time... I would appreciate it. I thought about signing him up on the board to talk directly to you and get advice.... but dont remember what the age limit is here. Hope all is well - God Bless

ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME :hpygrp: I am medical assisting school - I drew blood for the first time in my phlebotomy class... SOOO fun... but since we're practicing on each other... I look like I have track marks on my arm.. HAHA Anyways, I start with BioEthics in January, Statistics in the summer, A&P I next call and A&P II spring of 2010... and I am applying to the nursing program for the fall of 2010. :) Getting my BSN!!! Can't WAIT!!!

I know exactly how you feel. I switched where I was sitting in my class too... the girl next to me was HORRIBLE .... She would talk very loud during class, and every time the teacher would say something in her lecture, the girl would repeat it loudly and mispronounce words... Then she would sit there and smack her lips the entire night... OMG... I wanted to strangle her. She put her feet up in the middle chair between us and it constantly hit my chair... she would take up 3/4ths of the table... can you tell she irritated me? So, I moved and I am sitting with a nice young lady who is quite and listens the first time. And if she has questions she asks me during break or after class. YAY... much more relaxing. I dont text anymore because I don't want to be the "culprit" who distracts anyone. Although you can't hear my phone at all (it's silent and a touchscreen)... but it doesn't matter. Although - I left it on just in case because of possible emergencies at home... (disabled diabetic mother constantly has BS in the 30's and 40's)... and its a good thing I left it on last week... my husband was driving his motorcycle home and was hit by a car on the freeway. Wow... I almost had a heart attack. He was okay thank God. From then on, I have gotten the "OK" from the instructor to leave my phone on, as long as it's silent. (The screen lights up when there is a call or msg for me to call home) so I told her if that happens I will leave the class room so not to distract anyone)

That is horrible..... where is the respect? My instructor knows about my occasional texts with my husband because I explained to her before term even started that I need to have my phone available, but I promised to keep it on silent to not bother anyone. I take care of my mother (she lives with me) and she is disabled... and on top of that my husband has Crohn's disease and lately he has been doing kinda bad. So she knows I will have it out on my desk so I can see it light up... but I will leave the class room if a call comes in... He knows to only text me if he really needs me.... but mostly its a note to ask me to call him when I am on break or leaving school.... So far no one has complained and the instructor has been fine with it, as its not distracting her either. Now, granted, this isn't nursing school.... this is a VO-tech type of school with 30 people in my class... for Medical Assisting... I know I wouldn't be able to do this when I start nursing school... but that is 2 years off and hopefully my family's health will have improved somewhat by then so I wont be such a worry-wort... :)

Well you guys are both right.... One told you the end of next week, and someone else told SillyRabbit "November".... so both answers are good because the "end of next week" is technically November 7th. So you might very well know what's going on in a week!!! Just try not to stress about it. Take a deep breath, and relax. :)

In my MA class, I have quite a few girls who talk talk talk talk talk talk. It is quite annoying and bothersome to those who try and listen and can't hear... and sometimes they end up missing valuable information. I do text sometimes but not even close to those who are in my class. Usually its to my husband if he needs something important. (health related) But my phone is always on silent, and you can't hear anything because it's a touch screen. I even turned off the vibration so it doesn't distract anyone. I am carrying a 4.0 in my classes so studying, listening isn't a problem... only when the other girls talk does it become irritating. I have complained before and the teacher does say something - but they don't respect her, which is sad. I hope to God that they do not pass, because I sure as heck do not want these people working in the field, with access to drugs and needles, and sick/dying people. I definitely don't want them anywhere near myself or my family. God Bless you all. Tami

I think they go by a point system just like everyone else. Have you been to their site? I am applying to the program myself for the fall of 2010. I have been accepted into GMU and I am starting in January 09, finishing off my pre-reqs (only need 4)... and then hopefully will get in. You need to attend an "info" session with them and meet with a Nursing Advisor there. I am currently going to ACT to get certified as a MA to have something to fall back on just in case I don't get accepted right away. I have honestly only lived here for 2 years so I can't tell you too much as I am still learning myself. Holy cow!!! LOL What grade is your daughter in?? Maybe she knows my son? Where is ECPI? I chose ACT because it's just down the street from here. Is their program any good?? Where are you trying to get into the LPN program??? That might be an alternative for me as well if I can't get into the BSN program right away. How long ago did you start your MA program? I just finished my first module... so I have 4 more to go after I finish this new one. (I began the program right after Labor Day). Do you work? I only work part time, at Fresenius Medical Care, up in Fairfax. Lets chat more... maybe one day we can get together and compare notes. :) :typing

I am in the Wellington Community myself. Wellington Place apartments actually. :) My son goes to Metz Middle... :) I go to ACT college down the road right now... just getting my certs as an MA (backup plan) in case the Nursing program takes a while to get into. That's cool that you and your family live so close...
