How do I deal with a liar?
I would just ignore her.

Is this overtime at your facility?
Where I work you have to go over 40 hours in the week to get OT. Doesn't matter if you work doubles, day shift and then nights. You have to pass the 40 hour mark

Maxim? What is it like to work in this HH agency?
I worked for Maxim many years ago. I thought they were a great company but I liked my hospital job better-just because that was the kind of work preferred.

Who is in Nursing for the money?
While I wouldn't do the job for free. It is certainly not a career to get into just for the money. The money is not worth the stress you go through!!!! You have to love what you do or you will be very unhappy.

new nurse facility missing a narc
Narcotics are something you have to be very careful about. Always count them and trust no one. I have seen nurses get busted for diverting drugs that you never would have suspected. Like everyone said if you didn't take it, you have nothing to worry about.

Milking chest tubes
Where I work they tell you not to strip the tubing. On the policy, it says this Do NOT strip the tubing. If there are areas that contain small clots, gently squeeze the tubing in these areas between your thumb and forefinger.

Most Humorous Call-In Excuses
yeah? tell my boss that. in fact if you call out you have to call the boss first even if you call her at home at 2am. yes i am sure we could fight it but then you are marked for termination, who needs that? i agree it is a valid excuse. in fact i have called out when my dog died and my old boss gave me three days bereavement. i had the dog for 15 years and i was very upset. i didn't ask for 3 days, she offered it. the boss i have now would tell me to come to work-not a dog lover

crock shoes.
Yeah me too! But at my age I'd probably break my rear end trying to get around on them

Is working in a hospital really so awful?
Honestly I like to complain about it. But I've been doing it for a long time. And I miss it when I'm off. It has it's bad days and good days.

A pressure ulcer will also form a blister, before it becomes a crater.

Differences: Nursing then and now...
I remember when I first became a nurse. We smoked in the nurse's station. We had to wear caps, which were a pain because they would fall off at times. Gloves were insulting to the patient. You stood up and offered the doctor your seat and you brought them coffee. We did not have IV pumps. You calculated your drips and used a roller to regulate them. ICU patients were in ICU, not on the floor. The floor was for walkie talkies. You never heard that's "not my patient". All patients were everyones responsibilty. It was "our" hospital and we were proud of it and the care we provided. Doctor's writting was never legible. We had standing orders for pain meds, sleeping pills. meds for nausea etc. Tylenol was given as a nursing order until recent years. To name a few things Some things are much worse than they were years ago and some things are much better. Mainly I think nurse's attitudes have gotten much worse. Alot of nurses come to the profession for the money. To me this is not a profession you do for the money, although I think we deserve the money and even more money than we make. But then who will that attract to our profession?

Most Humorous Call-In Excuses
My hospital doesn't respect HIPPA laws. You have to tell them why. I don't know of any funny call out excuses although some are lies and you know it.

crock shoes.
In my hospital you are not allowed to wear crocks with holes. Why anyone would want to, I don't know. I'd be afraid of something getting on my feet. Accidents happen, I've had my shoes pooped and peed on by a patient as I was walking them to the bathroom-I'm thankful my shoes did not have holes! They do make crocks with no holes now. Personally I want rollerblade work shoes

Evidence collection on unconscious patient
I think the kit should be collected but then wait until the unconscious patient wakes up to see how they want to proceed. Unless it's obvious they have been raped then I think a family member should approve it.

Do You Announce That You're a Nurse?
I always let them know I am nurse. I am proud of what I do. I don't expect special treatment. But want them to understand my questions and answer me in medical lingo.

Is it safe to sterilize medical tools this way???
Sounds gross to me. Old Blood on instruments? I wouldn't go to that doctor!!!!! What happened to one use plastic speculums? Sounds like the health dept would close that office down
-
Am I wrong?
Mejane19 I am just curious do you have any experience in the medical field or are you just here as the daughter of a doctor? emmy41lgpn I think he should have told you up front that he did not have an answering service or anyone covering him. I think it was wrong of him not to visit you in the hospital if he knew you were there.

Differences in pain medication
From my experience Percocet is stronger than Loratab Demerol is pretty much a drug of the past for reasons posted by Grumpy Dilaudid is the drug seekers choice so I think that may be the strongest other than Fentanyl which requires patient be in step down or ICU Morphine is best for chest pain because it also dilates the arteries-thus better O2 supply

I can't get a hospital job!
I don't know. Wonder if your legal experience is scaring them off.
-
PO vs IV formulations
I agree. Was it a pharmacist you talked to or a pharmacist. Where I work there are 2 pharmacist that I fully trust otherwise I double check everything they say and find many times, other than my favorite two pharmacists, I am given incorrect information

Should I work as a GN b4 u pass I pass my boards
I agree. Starting a job as a GN is stressful. I guess it would depend on how well you handle stress. Taking nclex stressed out from your job will only make it worse

Slow times at hospitals?
Summer is always slower as are holidays. I guess it just depends on where you are
