  1. All title 38 nurses get boarded by the professional standards board for initial offer. They based it solely off the contents of your resume and how it aligns with the professional standards boards requirements for each level. It is very very important that when they ask you to include what you have done and as the USA jobs postings state "IN DESCRIBING YOUR EXPERIENCE, PLEASE BE CLEAR AND SPECIFIC. WE MAY NOT MAKE ASSUMPTIONS REGARDING YOUR EXPERIENCE." If you submit a resume that simply is one page and has only dates of work and brief job descriptions you risk a very low boarding, and they don't allow redos. Long story short, brag about yourself to get the salary you are searching for.
  2. Well, I am a manager for someone that couldn't do CPR, and at my facility there is a waiver process involved. My staff member did receive a waiver bc of the proximity of other CPR trained staff in the area and her medical condition. If you are an otherwise excellent employee I see them accommodating. This may actually be more a reasonable accommodation request than an ADA issue. You may want to ask in those terms. Good luck with your health and employment.
  3. we have up to two hours after our shift starts to call in. I have called in 15 minutes before my shift due to a car accident. Life happens.
  4. calling of references is very good....at our VA that means your looking at being selected if you pass the hiring/HR processes.
  5. yes! nursing school sucks. work life balance as a nurse can be hard too! hope u find balance and hey 3 months left...you're almost there!
  6. The VA is unionized :-) and no it isn't hard to get in, USAJOBS...takes a long time to get hired but it isn't challenging.
  7. I have been a RN since 2008. I make great money and have great hours. I'm in leadership and am able to impact change. But, I'm not satisfied in my career, I feel stagnate. If I could do it again I would go for a terminal degree like pharmD or MD. Nursings career ladder is much more complex, the straight path would have been more satisfying.

when I was nursing I asked the pharmacy and they did have a special book....but with drugs you should be looking for the "pregnancy classification" that's in all drug books.
  9. our Va has 12s and 8s. also have weekend package 36 hours get paid for 40
  10. night is 10% of hourly weekend is 25% and yes if u work a weekend or night on the weekend it is 35%.
  11. yes it is VERY heavily weighted, good luck!
  12. Your "packet" will go before a board and you must write to the qualification standards of the professional nursing board. Google it to get help writing it, it's what they base your pay on in addition to education and experience. I don't know any CBOC w night evening weekend holiday, may be 1. the VA puts it in so they can float u to other campuses or 2. they used a cookie cutter posting or 3. they have very rare coverage you are correct the process is very long but worth it!
  13. Correct. You will be offered a salary but that is without differentials.
  14. I'm a woman and my father became a nurse before me and mentored me into becoming one!
  15. are you traveling just for the financial benefits? have u checked your area for higher paying jobs?
  16. Sounds like you are insightful and learning. Please keep an open mind she may be great when she isn't percepting, hopefully you get someone more your speed and style for nights.
  17. I did this role before I became a nurse. for me the ortho floor was a lot of helping people get to the bathroom in the middle of the night hooked up to their scds and the pain from moving and assisting them back to bed. before bed is getting them in their CPM machines that bend the new knees, early morning is accuchecks and getting them up for breakfast. ortho floor is a lot of physical moving bc patients are limited based on diagnosis. didn't work neuro can't help U there. congrats!
  18. I have worked at the VA for 6 years, it is a great place to work. Benefits, Union, set staffing ratios, it makes the private sector look like a joke!
  19. I can help. how would you like to communicate? I have experience w scabies in the long term care and acute care setting.
  20. I<3Nursing replied to NRRN,IWP's topic in General Students
Danskos yes! there is a break in period for those fyi
  21. No. Everything patient related was self disclosed by the patient there was no personal information brought up by the nurse.
  22. I can only give you my thoughts on Des Moines. I'd look at Blank Children's Hospital for higher level NICU. Please be aware pay for MN to IA is vastly different. We are worst in the nation for nursing pay. Also Iowa city is a college town, Des Moines is the capital, we awesome suburbs! Just my two cents.
  23. Desktop computer, most colleges have laptops at the library but I was looking to get out of college debt free.
  24. Both courses are time consuming for me anatomy was more time consuming with memorization ect. Good idea balancing your schedule always important but vital in nursing school :-)
