For the shirt, I think you're only allowed the one pocket on the left chest. I tried to get some two-pocket scrub types and they told me that wasn't allowed at all and they had gotten in trouble for selling that type to GCC students before. For the pants, you can have as many pockets as you like. I don't know if your indigo will be the same as Navy, but I ordered some Dickies brand in Navy with five pockets, and they worked fine. I got them from http://www.mynursinguniforms.com.

It should be the same, Caityliz. I bought that from Skyscape for my PDA and haven't noticed any differences from the print copy I have.

Guess I should have said, it hasn't proved true "yet" I'd be interested to know how many of those just couldn't keep up with the reading and/or studying (I mean, for instance, weren't very dedicated to begin with or had no idea what they were getting in for) vs those who failed for other reasons.... oh well, guess we'll never know that A lot of the people I know who dropped simply couldn't handle the schedule, were always late/disorganized, or just didn't like nursing.

This must have been a couple years ago? I was at the pinning ceremony for this year and there were more students than that graduating.

Well, I'm getting ready to start my second year this September, and it certainly hasn't proven true. I'd say we may have lost 10% or so; and many of these were the ones who couldn't keep up with the reading and dropped or withdrew. They didn't say that to us at orientation, either. Some of the teachers of first year are fantastic! And most of them are good at what they do. I never noticed any of the instructors being any different than all the other instructors I've had - some awesome, some middling, haven't had a bad one yet - there was certainly enough work to do though. :)

In my first couple clinicals, us students just interviewed patients and worked on therapeutic communication, which is what our first few lectures were on. We had to do progress recordings (basically just a record of what we spoke about and whether our conversation was therapeutic or not).

I have never carried so much crap around in my pockets as when I'm on the floor. So yeah, those "cute" scrubs aren't that cute any more when they're bulging out half a foot on either side with those flushes, alcohol swaps, and pens!

I'm avoiding studying too. Y'know, not consciously, since I sit down and study and before I realize it I've flipped around and am looking at something on the computer.... five minutes later my brain goes "Hey, you! You're supposed to be studying for that final tomorrow!"

Hehe.... Last semester was my first semester, and when I was in it I was thinking "you know, this isn't bad... what is everyone talking about?" All of my friends felt the same. Now I'm in my second semester; and now I know. My short and quick answer is yes, it does get tougher.

I liked A&P 2 better. I wouldn't say that it's easier, but I thought it was more interesting when we were talking about actual organs rather than muscle and bone; this made it easier to learn for me because it was more interesting. :)

Oh my gosh, I feel your pain. My med-surg book is the same way. It takes every single disorder and every single version of every single disorder and the current research on every single disorder, as well as the older research, down to the absolute chemical/atomical level in the most technical terms possible. I'm a science geek, and it even makes my eyes water at times. Painful!

Psychology & self concept I don't have anything that can help you out, but good luck with it... I know how painful it is.

I agree with many of you. However, I believe the person who said that Nursing schools have to find a balance between delegation and getting their students enough experience with personal care has it right. One of the most important things about teaching students delegation in nursing school, IMO, is that delegation gives them the time to learn how to take care of an appropriate amount of patients. I don't know of many situations where you get one-two patients and do total care on them, except for high-acuity wards and nursing students. In most cases nurses are given a large amount of patients and others who can help them manage their care. What I'm trying to say is that I don't think delegation is something that should be withheld from a nursing school curriculum, because otherwise a student would get no experience with taking care of an increasingly larger amount of patients, because they wouldn't have time. Which would you be more afraid of? A student who has less experience with personal care but strong assessment skills; one who may be a bit clumsy, but can get the job done with the education they've been given? Or one, who, when thrown on a real ward and given six-eight (or more!) patients has experience with handling just one or two and can't properly and accurately apply the nursing care priorities that they've learned due to lack of experience delegating? Either way, whether you believe schools should be teaching delegation or not... I'd be ashamed to leave my patients room and spend thirty minutes hunting down an Aide to get them a drink of water or take them off a bed pan if it would only take me a few minutes and none of my other patients have immediate and pressing needs. "Wiping butts" is just part of the game, and they're paying to learn how to play it....

That certainly puts my uniform into perspective. *comfort*

It's packed full of a lot of practice questions, explains everything pretty clearly, and on top of that it has pictures of medication labels and syringes and IV bags and things for you to practice off of so that you can learn what the different types of things may look like. If it were me and I had this to do over again, I would work on the nursing process, the common medications, and medication dosage calculations.

If someone decides not to attend GCC, then she may get a call if she was borderline and be able to attend anyway by taking one of those seats. You'd think after all that trouble no one would give up their spot, but truthfully, there were 10-15 in my class who got in that way, so there is still a chance. I applied last year so I doubt my Hesi/Science scores would be accurate for what was required this year. :)

Would you please, please, please stop interrupting the professor, the clinical instructor, me, my friends, anyone else in our class, the cat, and that random person on the sidewalk who was innocuously talking on the cell phone and doesn't even know who you are to talk about how you had THAT disease process too? Please? Seriously, if you have every single thing wrong with you from two semesters worth of nursing school, why are you still alive?!

....when you're studying in Starbucks with your clinical group; someone starts laughing so hard they can't breathe; four other people start yelling "AIRWAY! AIRWAY!" which makes the person who's dying of laughter laugh even harder and the five people sitting at the tables around you look at you like you're nuts... ....when your professors start noticing the nonverbal communication flying around the room from people who've been in nursing school together for so long (seems like forever) that you don't even NEED words any more!
