As for finding the application: Go to the gatewacc.edu home page. Click on the Nursing link on the left side in the navigation bar. On the right side of the different nursing programs at Gateway you'll see some other links. One of them is the fast track LPN application. Spring 09 is still up there; hopefully the fall one shows up soon cuz I too am planning on applying. :)

Hey this is a funny thread. I've never had major surgery or heard stories about what I've said (though I think I'd find it funny so yes I think I'd want to know). I only had oral (wisdom tooth extraction) surgery and it was the coolest experience to me (I agree with the poster who said, "That was fun, let's do it again" lol) because I'm laughing one minute, and the next thing I know they're waking me up. I wanna know what happened in between... it's like time stopped. But - I've been known to sort of sleepwalk when I'm extreeeeeeeeemely tired. I've had people tell me I answer phones when they ring - and I have no recollection of it. So it would be interesting to see what would happen under extreme sedation? Who knows. But yes this was a funny funny thread. :paw:

That's good information. :) Thanks for sharing that. Did you work any OT? Have you changed jobs since then? Did you have any prior medical experience?

Do you know how much experience they need for that rate?

In speaking with one of the staff at RSAA - I asked him what a new CNA with no prior medical experience could expect to make and his answer was just about "either side of 12/hr." So I've been guessing that's what it'll be at first. Most agencies that I've read/heard won't hire unless you have some experience first - and that's when you get the higher rates through the agencies.

You and me both! I actually lost a lot once and put it back on. Bad me. :) But I am planning to go back on my diet that I did well on back then. It was a low carb/low fat high protein that I followed w/a doctor's supervision. No real sets of scrubs for me yet. I can't wait though. :) I am starting CNA class on the 21st and I am trying to find some white scrub bottoms. I'm holding off on buying anything until I have a job, though - I know that every place has different rules about what to wear etc.

At least in my experience, I think in your interview before you get offered/accept an offer, you can discuss salary rates and you can decide from there if you want to accept the position. When you tell your boss is up to you. I work in computers right now and I know I'd rather have a job in hand before I let go of my current one so I wouldn't tell my boss. Yet when I transferred within the same company I let my current manager know because I didn't want it to get back to them and have it be a surprise. So I'm not really sure. All my experience is non-nursing/medical though. And I don't consider my job a "real job" still :) All though it's more of a real job than Burger King (which I did when I was 16).

In the nursery where I volunteer one night a week they have a small-ish nursery. They do the billi-lights in there, antibiotics, and then "babysit" the babies whose moms want to sleep. They can only have X number of babies, though (ratio to # of medical professional staffed in the nursery), so if the nusery is full, they usually rotate the babies out - the ones that have been in longer go back to the Moms so a new mom needing some sleep can send the baby in. They usually staff one nurse and one CNA in the nursery and then each baby has its own nurse that brings them in to do vitals etc. While in the nursery, though, it's the nurse, CNA, and whatever volunteer that might be there to care for the babies when they need to eat, be changed, or be held. I volunteer at night, though, so I'm not sure how the nursery operates in the day but I assume it's pretty much the same.

Well uhm not really sure how a raise could be a bad thing? :) But congratulations! I'm not even getting the full 4% I've come to expect each year at my job. And I've been with the same company over 7 years. Not in nursing yet though. Sorry can't really be much help. :)

I am going because I want out of my job as sooooooon as possible, and getting my CNA gets me going quickest - I think though I'll try going for the LPN Fast Track at Gateway in the Spring next year, and then work as an LPN until I can get through the rest of getting through the RN program. Because I don't know how long I'll have to wait to get through the RN program so I don't see that getting the LPN hurts.

I have an add on question to this: if you're working OT is that counted after 36 hours or after 50 hours?

So the LPN Fast Track is still 2 semesters if all the information I'm reading is correct, right? But basically you can get the LPN portion w/o needing all of the pre-reqs BIO, MAT, and CHM finished? How extreme are the classes for the LPN portion - could you still work on Pre-reqs while you get the LPN if you can fit it into a schedule?

I just signed up for RSAA today - I'm so excited to get started! (24 Days April 21st) I am doing the evening class (M-Thurs 5-10). The total tution is 850 - the state test is 85 and the only thing separate (aside from some scrub pants) - but they do the test AT the school so it's not like you'll be driving all over town. Tests are also on weekends (Saturday OR Sunday Morning or afternoon) and you have a set date depending on when you go in for the program. I talk to Jim whenever I call and he is VERY heplful and gives you all the information you need - in what has to be the most patient manner because I'm sure he answers the same questions day in and day out all day long. :) Oh and there are 3 payment plans - either the 1/2 and 1/2 - 425 to register and 425 later, or they use the same system the community colleges use - ecashier. That one you only have to pay 205 up front and the rest is broken down into 3 or 6 monthly payments. I'm SO SO SO excited! I feel like this is the first step towards a long path but it will be so worth it in the end. I can't stand my current job any longer (technical support) so getting my CNA will be a help in getting me out of here - although I'll have to work a lot more to stay afloat. :) Ok I'll quit rambling now and let you get back to your regularly scheduled program! :)

ok i know i'm not a nicu person yet - not even in nursing school (going to start pre-reqs this summer/fall etc). so please forgive me if i'm intruding... but a few weeks ago when i was volunteering in the nursery (every sunday night!) there was a baby who had come in (i think) from the nicu that made me decide i was going to work in the nicu (after being too afraid i couldn't handle it, too sad etc). she just looked so sad because she wasn't feeling good. so i've been in here reading all of these posts, and i love them! but i have one question maybe sounds dumb - but what do you guys mean when you refer to "kangaroo"-ing/care etc? i haven't quite figured it out... i know i probably shouldn't decide yet where i want to be since i haven't "been there done that," but really after reading these i think my heart is set. if anyone wants to pm me suggestions on how i can best my chances of getting a nicu job after graduating i'd be glad to hear them. and the post that had me really crying was this one:

I think if you have your CNA certification it won't matter at that point. But at least that's what I'd understand. But maybe if you're working as a CNA you could be flexible with your work schedule and get into the day program. :) Would you mind sharing when/times for the spring? (Because I might still go for it then) :)

well - i think if you look on the program listing for the fast track you'll see it's an "or" situation: either have you already have your cna (which i would assume is the certification) or take the cna program @ one of the community colleges. but maybe they'll have another one that starts in the spring? in the meantime you can probably continue with other nursing pre-reqs if you're heading for the rn. but the fast track definitely requires fewer credits. but just think of the medical terminology and fundamentals of healthcare delivery as added knowledge. :) i actually hope to take them this summer - i was considering the same route you were but my class definitely wouldn't be finished in time. i'm just hoping to get through a cna program, get licensed, work on pre-reqs and then hopefully not wait forever to get into a program. if all goes well i should have all the pre-reqs finished by the end of next spring semester. after that it's just a waiting game. :) good luck!
