Did Anyone FeeL Nervous before becoming an LPN......
Wow, i know exactly how you feel. I was scared of puking at the first sniff of smelly poo. Now, it is no big deal. I just try to get my nose as close to my armpit as possible. I am entering my last semester of an LPN program this fall. You will be terrified of everything, failing the classes, failing the labs, doing something wrong at clinicals. You and everyone else in your classes/group will all talk about how scared you are. Once you get done with the first day, the initial fear is a lot less intense and you just get into a "groove", sort of. The fear is still there, it just becomes part of your life and you get used to it, sometimes you don't even notice it. But, i know nurses who still have that kind of fear...if they do one thing wrong and something happens...you can loose your license. When you think of it that way...i think clinicals are much less stressful. Don't worry, it won't be long and you will be looking back and smiling reminiscing about school. :)

MA's Calling Themselves Nurses?
If I offended anyone by saying that my grandma reffered to caring for people as nursing and that was years ago. What I was trying to say is that i have heard of the term being used loosely. I forgot to add that I distinctly remember seeing everyone in the clinic with a name tag that identified their certifications of nursing LPN/RN-i don't think the receptionists had tags-I don't remember seeing any on the MA's. But the LPN's and RN's had tags.

MA's Calling Themselves Nurses?
I am a student and would be really PO'd if some one who wasn't licensed claimed to be a nurse. I would be even more PO'd if i were the patient. However, i would say that the general population does not know the difference among PCA, NA, LPN, RN, HUC-they think everyone is a nurse. I know as a fact, i didn't know there was a difference between RN and LPN. If some one said they were a nurse, i assumed they were an RN. Boy, have I learned a lot since those days-and i am only a first semester LPN student!! I vaguely remember the whole refering to caring for some one as "nursing" them. However, they always refered to it as "nursing" so-and so, not that they WERE a nurse. But that was back in grandma's day, 70 years ago! Yep, things have changed! Anyway, in the great state of MN-you can not practice nursing w/o a current license. So, i would assume that if you told someone you were a nurse-you would be commiting a crime.

Need suggestions on BSL/CPR certificate!! Many thx
This will be mostly a refresher. Although the bagging will be new...although I wouldn't say it is all that HARD. I am sure when you are doing it in real life it can be stressful. I took a class at the local hospital and we were done in like 7-8 hours. We did not take first aid like red cross offers (BLS and First Aid in one class). I would definelty suggest taking an AHA at a local hospital.

Breast Reduction ???? To or not to ????
I think the breast reduction made them look skinnier. One had always had a relatively flat stomach, you just couldn't see it before. The other one is the shape of a potato anyway-so it just makes her look marginally skinnier. I would think that most men would think that the one looked better before-simply because she was a red head, had BIG BOOBS, and a flat stomach.

Breast Reduction ???? To or not to ????
I know 2 people that have had breast reductions and both absolutely love their new boobs. One used to have her bras specially made so that she could tolerate them for an 8 hour work day. She just loves her new look-and being able to shop at a regular store for bras.

Nursing school loans
My SIL is a transcriptionist. She was making $14 an hr a year or 2 ago. But she has been doing it for at least 5 years. I don't know how easy it is to find openings. I think it only took her 1 or 2 semesters at a tech college.

Depressed about job experiences as CNA
You pick up your chin and keep on going with what you want to do! If you like the residents and you like the work, don't let anyone stand in your way. You sound like just the kind of person those residents needed. And i think your boyfriend was right. I think your co-workers were intimidated by you. Maybe by your looks, but most certainly by your level of care and not whining about things-oh and working hard. Just like with any job-sometimes you don't "fit" in certain cultures and it makes going to work a nightmare. It happens everywhere-not just nursing. I find it happen with a number of different scenerios. Don't give up!!

How often are the Dads prosecuted?
I went to high school with a girl who got prego when she was 16 and her boyfriend was 15 (he was 16 when they had the baby). I believe she had to go to court and they ordered that she had to go to some sort of class-kind of like AA-I can't remember what it was called-but it was like a stataotry rape thing. I was really suprised that the county was so on top of that.

I am a worried CNA
Girl, get those NIKE's on and like the wind!! You don't need to- and shouldn't take that. I would get a different job and call the state as soon and I step foot out of there! Not to mention I would let those other CNA's have it with both barrels! If they don't care about people-go work retail!! Not to mention if some low life called my house with the sob/how-dare-you story, I'd just tell her if she had been doing her job she wouldn't have been in trouble in the first place! I hate when businesses pay their workers pennies because the people on top want more $$$. It is always the people who need help the most that suffer. I hoep that there is a SPECIAL place in hades for these people!! Right next to those who get a job in healthcare and really don't care about people (not to mention falsifying records!!) :angryfire

Federalize Nursing Licenses! Who's with me?
Isn't EVERYTHING about $$ these days? Well, Federal licenses would surely put an end to revoked licencees going to the neighboring state to practice. Since we are tested on a federal level, wouldn't it make sense to have Federal licensure, and from there maybe just registering in each state that you practice? But....could you imagine the hoops they would make you go through to renew the Fed. license, not to mention what they woudl probably charge?

'Dumbing Down of Healthcare'
is how everyone would ask "will that be on the test?" My thought was-what difference does it make-you have to know it anyway. If I were an instructor that would be my answer. However, my instructor was pretty patient. She would let us know which charts we would be tested on (some of the charts in the book she would never even refer to in class). But she would never tell us which items in the chart we would be tested on (obviously). I was just suprized that people would ask such a dumb question. Come on-would she really tell us what would be on the test?? Some people would constantly whine about different things, too. I couldn't believe how immature some people were-and nearly all were older than 25!!

'Dumbing Down of Healthcare'
I attend a Tech College and I am currently enrolled in 1st semester classes of their LPN program. I was shocked at how poorly people did in my A&P class. I think it comes down to dedication and preparation. You must really take the time to study, and I think you must also have knowledge of general biology. The instructors a the college point blank told us it was a class they use to "weed out" people. Plain and simple-I think that if people would have dedicated the time to studying they would have been fine. I certainly don't think that just "anyone" can do well in these classes, either. I wonder how they though they would make it through nursing school.

Marriage to a Nurse-- Need HELP
Okay, can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen. Sometimes things don't end up the way you ecpec them to. Sometimes people don't give you the answer you are looking for. That doesn't give you the right to get mad at them. Boy, you have a lot to learn about life-have fun. Glad she chooses you, because I sure wouldn't. Once again, as a couple you are going to have a lot more serious things to worry about than her work schedule. Sorry about your childhood. Maybe there are some issues from that period of your life that still want to be worked out. Okay, when you are having a heart attack at 42 and your wife is looking at you helpless because she doesn't know what to do, just remember that you said you wouldn't want anyone here to treat you, and your faithful wife dropped out of nursing school so you could spend more time together. Ohhhhh, I'm feeling SASSY today!

interview clothes
Sears also has some nice 2 piece suits that are affordable. But, certainly the cheapest (and probably easiest) way is to go to Wal-mart or target and get slacks or khaki's and a nice sweater knit or dress shirt. Keep it really simple and classic...solid color slacks and shirt. It is easier to interchange if you pick up another pair of slacks or shirt. Pastels you can't really wear in fall and winter and brown you can't wear in spring and summer. Also...you might wear your dress to weddings...but you will probably wear this second outfit to wakes and funerals...gee, that sounded really morbid. And, professional closed toe shoes (Leave the sandals at home).

Marriage to a Nurse-- Need HELP
I didn't mean to attack you like a pitbull or anything. Repeat after me "Everythign on TV is not reality". Here is an idea...ask her where she wants to work. You or your fiancee call that hospital and talk to the HR dept. See if they would be willing to let her shadow a nurse or talk to a nurse in whatever dept. she is thinking she wants to work in. That might give you-and her-some insight on what life is like for a nurse in that hospital. I know some suburban hospitals have set schedules and not swing shifts. I kind of think you are freaking out about this a little. You're making assumptions about nursing...and you need to get information. I also think you need to look at the bigger picture...there are going to be a LOT more serious things you 2 will have to deal with as a couple than her work shedule. If her schedule doesn't work out...she can work somewhere else. You have to forgive me-but you just don't seem very supportive of her career choice. And that's fine...I'm not marrying you-so I don't really care. But, I agree with Rusty. BTW--our "perks" aren't in cash bonuses for reaching or sales goals, or free club membership through the firm. It is knowing that we helped someone...improve their health...care for the ill...saved a life...whatever. I'd like to see some one in accounting get that kind of satisifaction from their job.

dress code before clocking in
I'd buy a HUGE mu-mu and wear that with a nice pair of ugly, garage sale, outdated flats....Hey, It's a dress, right?? Or they'd be sick of seeing me in the same khaki's and T-shirt EVERY DAY!! Give me a break...obviously some one who has never even WORN scrubs made that one up!! Yeah, i'd look at your state's Dept of Labor web-site...or look in the white pages and give them a call. I'm thinking if they have a seperate entrance for employees they can't make you do that...but you had better find out before you buck the system.

Marriage to a Nurse-- Need HELP
But, maybe you should re-think why you want marry her. If you want some one around whenever you are...get a dog. It isn't fair to ask some one to give up a dream for you. If you really love her...you will figure a way to work it out. You will put your fears aside and deal with schedules, and the risk of injury, blah, blah, blah because you want to see her happy at what she does and succeed. This is really rude to say, and I am sorry-but grow up and quit being so selfish!! And maybe you should be talking to her about how you feel. You remind me of my husband when we were first married. And thank GOD he changed-otherwise I wouldn't be married to him now!!

What not to say / do while you are in the ER...
Okay, my hubby said this to a nurse when he was in college "you miss on the first try-I'll stick you with that thing"...in the ER for dehydration from DRINKING...Okay, I am a first semester LPN student, so I don't know what rights a nurse has. I think I would just give the look of death "fine have it your way-you'll have to wait until one of the IV team/expert IV starter has time to start yours" and walk away...maybe after PT has to sit for awhile-providing they are not in a life threatening situation-they'll be more inclined to let me try. And of course, document, document, document. Hey, I'd consider it a threat. I can't imagine it would be easy to get a line on some one that is dehydrated.

Question about rectal exam
Okay, I feel really left out here! I have been getting pelivc's for 9 years and I have never had a doc or NP perform or even suggest a rectal. I have been to nice clinics and PP. Weird...I will have to ask next time I go in.

child care problems
My MIL does daycare out of her home, too (licensed) and does the contract thing. However, there is a person in my neighborhood that is licensed out of her home and she DOES NOT do contracts. I think each person is different. I also think the people who haven't done daycare for very long do not have contracts. I think the reason providers do that is to protect themselves and to set guidelines. Also, they look at it as. "I should get a paid vacation just like you do". But, I agree with, "you chose that job". Just like nursing is a 24/7 operation-I will have to work holidays and such. Find some one that doesn't require a contract. That's it, I'm never having kids!
