What's Your Best Nursing Ghost Story?
I've been a travel nurse for 20+ years and most facilities have some disturbing occurrence. Currently I'm at a hospice facility and occasionally I get a feeling that I'm not alone, although I've never 'knowingly' seen an apparition. However.... I do have an experience. My patient was a young woman dying of cancer and getting very close, her husband had a habit of leaving his shoes outside the door. Noticing them there I started in to talk with him and the door was slowly opening a little. As I went in the husband was at bedside and seeing me said "I think she's gone" and I concluded that she had. The husband immediately left, and I called the funeral home for transport. Meanwhile, I had past the room twice and the door was standing open of which I closed it on both occasions (this room dosen't have that tendency- normally). Later, I asked the cna why she had left the door open has we had visitors there for other patients. She said that she too had closed it and thought I had left the door open. I had assumed the husband had been opening the door when I went in to speak with him, but now realizing he was about fifteen feet away by the bed. This has not reoccurred, so strange. I do believe the woman's spirit wanted the door open, after the body was gone it didn't seem to matter. What do you think?

Pray for me!!!!!!! Only 9 weeks until this assignment ENDS!!!!!!!!!!
that's a hell of a good feeling isn't it. i get that urge to be gone after three months even if it's a good assignment. travelers in this prof. are a unique lot, we hate it on the one hand but one the other we love it more. kinda wierd...another wierd thing is why do the "mods" want to filter out useful information? simulair to removing a hazzard sign from the highway. i dunno.

Am I too old to dorm on campus?
my initial reaction of being too old for dormlife at age 24 struck me as funny. it should actually help as you have more maturity, the only issue is if you will be able to sleep, which is all you will be doing there. accelerated bsn programs are very busy. i checked an agenda and realized there were no bathroom breaks scheduled for that year, as i could eat a snack on the run to the next class or lab. point is there isn't any free time, your life is on hold much more so than regular college courses. not saying it can't be done, but good luck

Making the Move to Florida
no wonder i get blank stares from nurse recruiters - however,$19 when i was a new grad would have been fantastic. but now.. i can,t see showing up. sorry, i have no info regarding tampa areas to live & work. there are i'm sure an array of possibilities and if you have any experience at all don;t settle for less than $25 w/benes(staff). that's low but this is florida.

Ever work at one of these Fla. hospitals?
i work in jupiter med center. it's okay..depends on where you work (tele) is a hell. the staff are semi-friendly, fairly good help (cnas, secretaries), chg nurse is free but don't seem to do much. one of the worse computer systems. the pharmacy is fast, responsive to questions. the hospital is clean. the lab...you really have to watch closely for timed labs. same with radiology. docs are a mix, but overall are good. the pay is so-so. my greatest concern is with the high acuity and the high ratio (7-8 pts) with the rest of job responsablities. whatelse, it's a job..i'm looking for greener pastures.

Do you clean desk and hands before test?

Pray for me!!!!!!! Only 9 weeks until this assignment ENDS!!!!!!!!!!
on the positive side, know that you have the option to leave. this is one of the greatest benefit inherent as a traveler. i too have assignments where i've marked the days off a caleder...i empathize with you. keep to the fundamentals and you will be okay. leave a mark when you go, let the hr person know why your so eager to leave and won't be back, and will warn fellow travelers off...now where is this place?

Ever work at one of these Fla. hospitals?
jfk or any of the hca hospitals are thumbs down... patient load maxed with no help (that you can find). i've heard good things for naples and ft. myers but pay very mediocre. orlando pay better - job wise i can't say. health first (melbourne area & cocco beach) had been great but have recently change attitude to nurses as just "meat" (per some friends still there). in the interview ask real questions and read between the lines in the responses. good luck and have a good winter season.

Do you clean desk and hands before test?
think of it as boot camp! i didn't do that per se, but every clinical was as severe as the military. the only thing not regulated was underwear - i wore bart simpson drawers under my whites. the only thing i can prescribe is if this is what you want then do it - most important pray before test and later before you clock in to your shift..i'm serious.

Making the Move to Florida
indigo in florida you are as unique as anyonelse - meaning everone in florida is from somewherelse. now in ltc (in which florida is God's waiting room) you may work until you too are a patient in ltc...and then maybe. .true most of the ltcs are staffed by lpns, but the facility must have an rn, as the state requirements mandate that accessments (required periodic and prn) must be done per rn. if this your desire the opportunities are there, get a newspaper for whichever location your interested and use discretion. god be with you.

Anyone Else Experience Mobbing?
can happen to anyone i suppose. shouldn't be like this, according to the borchure, however you may have noticed it happens. is dog-eat-dog sometimes, do what you need to survive. getting out of the prof. will not really be the answer, as i'm sure mobbing/bullying happens in all realms of life. my suggestion is not to carry a chip on your shoulder, but be wary, so that your not caught off guard. remember always smile when you kick them in the ...

feedback on fastaff
thanx--any info is much appreciated. yeah, i'm in for full time traveler (have been a "local" traveler for several years) i'm getting restless, starting to look further down the road when it's my exit. had disappointments with credibility of a couple other travel companies that promised along the same lines as fastaff. really is too much paperwork and playing phone tag for this kind of nothing. so this is why i'm asking... again thanks.

Anyone Else Experience Mobbing?
okay tommy do you believe in "mobbing " now? does not matter either way it does, as a traveler i get to experience it now and then. i take advantage of them when they are not scheduled together, my advice is to take this opportunity and be relentless. nurses are always asking for help to move patients, etc. doctors do this as well. i'm not insubordinate but i do get hard of hearing, and very slow to accommodate. when i leave (which is as soon as possible) i let it be known why i won't be back and why i will warn other travelers off. what goes around- comes around.

Why are nurses so angry?
i agree, we're not alone. want to experience a good sample of the crosssection of our population go to your local walmart on any given weekend to experience aggression, frustration, rudeness...or call a "customer service" of any company at any tme, drive at times of high traffic volumn. but us (nurses) we are special. we on one hand are fundamentally caring, but on the other...hypocritic...maybe. we are obligated to put a good face on (hopefully true care) for those entrusted to us. although we too are human and these forums are the ideal place to indulge in our "anger" and to find some empathy. getting rich--ha--just makin' a livin'.

Some nurses make you sick!!!
after thinking about this, i have to give "the venting nurse" the benefit of the doubt for 400 cc whatever...but to the point of this issue is going to the supervisor for this small matter of a beeping/empty feeder is malicious. true enough finding empty iv bags, feeders.etc is a pia, but who has the time to go whine. i work nights and i find many mistakes and questionable issues but i fix them if i can and go on. But, i am no florence nightengale - should some nurse following try to gain points or just mean and bring matters like this up. i will make every effort to find their errors and it usually won't take very long as we all make mistakes. who enjoies being called at home by the supervisor?

Travel nursing fears
since you live in florida and if your working in a hospital your probably in close contact with travelers. pick their brains about their travel agencies, recommended or not hospitals. most travel agencies offer more or less the same - it's general bill rate that is divided differently. mostly it boils down to the recruiter, you must develope a repoir...if you are unable ...it probably won't get any better. note that in the case of recruiters actions speak volumns, words are nothing.

Talking to many companies...
no problem except the paperwork. your under no obligation untill you agree to a contract (remember verb agreement is binding). always make copies of everything you send to the agency - they're notorious for losing stuff. many forms like physicals, lab titers, etc can be on a standard (no letterhead) form. keep your work history of the hospitals and contact info up todate - it gets confusing. make a list of questions for the interview. be sure you understand the way everything operates before you say yes, if your recruiter seems alittle coy on specifics - back away!
