Pulling Cannulation Needles and Labs
I appreciate your response, it helps clarify a few things for me. I too desire the patient's safety first. I agree with others rushing, it only seems to create more chaos than is needed, and less gets done as a result.

Pulling Cannulation Needles and Labs
New to dialysis and had a few questions! What's you policy on pulling needles and why? Is it one at a time or both? I see people pull both at the same time and use clamps for pressure. Would this increase their risk for clotting the access? I know what our policy says, but I also know what I am seeing. Is this a case of the "ideal world" verse the "real world" usage? Is there any real risks involved to the patient by pulling both at the same time? Also, I see labs being drawn from the port on the arterial line. Is this OK? I was told that there's saline in there and the data is not accurate. Is this true? I know we use central lines for lab draws, after wasting first. Does the line clear of saline quickly once the treatment has started? Newbie here needs help. I only seem to get conflicting info from the workplace. I can read the policies, but also observe the reality of it well.

Acute Pay
Thanks you, it does help. At least it gives me somewhat of an idea. I'm still hopeful more people will respond with hourly rates, diffs, on call pay, etc. I'm sorry about your "drafting" to your new position, and I do hope it works out for you. It seems every time life made a change for me, it was for the best but I just didn't know it at that time. May this be one of those for you! :wink2:

Acute Pay
Can anyone help me out with this? I have tried searching on my own, and can't find any answers to my specific questions.

Would I have any problems being a nurse with an associates degree?
I proudly have my ADN and it has never hindered me on my career path. I have worked ICU/CCU/ER. I have also been a Hospital House Supervisor and I never felt my degree held me back from any of my pursuits. I really think if you have an RN, that's enough. Who you are will determine what you do and how far you will go with it. I have also seen job ads where experience will fill-in for a degree in that field. I always tell people to get their ADN at a Community College. You will have it paid off in no time and get the necessary education to sit for the NCLEX. That's what I did, and I never regretted it. I have also felt no need to go on and get my BSN either. But, if I did, I could have always went back and got it done while making good wages to support the tuition. Best Wishes!

Acute Pay
Hi All! I am two months into my training as an Acute Dialysis Nurse, and I am loving it so far! I am curious though what the average pay would be for a nurse with years of ICU/CCU experience, but NO dialysis experience in Acutes? I am working in the midwest area too. I really have no idea what the salary range is. Please enlighten me so I have an idea of what a fair wage should be for a new dialysis nurse. THANKS!

Dry, cracked winter hands
Cutemol was advised to me from a Dermatologist. I went specifically to him for this problem. My hands were bleeding at work, and I thought I might be getting a latex allergy it was so bad. No script needed for it. It's not cheap, but actually is, as it lasts a loooonnngggg time. I had to call around locally to see which pharmacy had it in stock. I swear by it. All the nurses I have told about it who tried it swear by it too. http://www.amazon.com/Cutemol-Emollient-Cream-Summers-8oz/dp/B0001Z997E

Anyone Else Experience Mobbing?
there have recently been studies done on mobbing in the workplace. i suggest interested persons google the topic and read up/educate themselves. i have found this myself, and other material i have read supports it: who mobs "the literature is particularly critical of the perpetrators of mobbing. according to namie and namie (2000) those who instigate mobbing tend to be bullies, who try to dominate people in nearly every encounter. they are described as “inadequate, defective, and poorly developed people” (namie and namie, 2000, p. 14). they tend to be unpredictable, angry, critical, jealous, and manipulative (davenport, schwartz and elliot, 1999; namie and namie 2000). finally, glass (1999) describes them as representing “everything bad” (p. 239). targets of mobbing an individual can be mobbed regardless of age, race, religion, gender, or rank within an organization (davenport, schwartz and elliot, 1999; namie and namie 2000; leymann, n.d.). though any person is susceptible to being mobbed, those individuals who are devoted, loyal, creative, organized, cooperative and experienced professionals, seem to be at a higher likelihood to experience mobbing (davenport, schwartz and elliot, 1999). it is suggested that particularly creative individuals may often be subjected to mobbing because they promote new ideas which may challenge others (davenport, schwartz and elliot, 1999). mobbing may begin out of jealousy over the superior competence of the target, envy over the targets social skills or envy regarding the positive attitude of the target that attracts colleagues to them (namie and namie, 2000). at times mobbing is done as a bully revels in animosity, gaining pleasure from the excitement that it creates, giving the bully what westhues (2002) calls “the euphoria of collective attack”. why do targets endure it may be questioned why a person would stay in a job in which she/he is being mobbed. mobbing victims often stay because they love their work (davenport, schwartz and elliot, 1999). they feel a sense of identity, competence, and commitment to what they do. it is perhaps the targets commitment to the job that leaves him/her ill prepared for the mobbing experience. targets dedicated to their work may rely on their superior efforts to move ahead and gain recognition, in lieu of tracking the politics of the job. targets tend to be empathic, just, and fair people (namie & namie 2000: auerbach, 2001), who naively believe if they don’t fight back against mobbing and continue to excel in their work, the perpetrator will lose interest and stop or that others will recognize the work they do and disbelieve the rumors and lies being told. this lack of knowledge about mobbing leaves the target little time to build the necessary survival networks to combat the problem (davenport, schwartz and elliot, 1999)." i will say this for myself, i am a strong person. i have fought the good fight for over a year. but, you can not beat the mob, or ignore them either. i wish i knew what "the survival networks" mentioned above were because i have found none. do not let my "weakankles" sign-on id fool you. the only thing weak about me is my ankles, and my back.

Sorry, I have to disagree with you. That's like saying someone's who's stoned to death in Iran had the power to stop it? Or, they empowered the mob to do it? Are you serious?

Anyone Else Experience Mobbing?
I think this is the first step towards change with this. However, I also think this is what started turning "the mob" against me to begin with. I didn't join the mob at the beginning of my employment there while they were ganging up on someone else at the time. Gracious no, I even tried to point out their untruths against the poor soul. Call me naive, foolish, or idealistic. I just still can't stop trying to hang onto my integrity in these toxic swamps though. And yes, that person quit 6 months later anyhow. I am in my 40's and have lots of ICU experience. I am simply put, a good and respected nurse by the Docs. Ironically, I think this also contributed against me here. Anyhow, I am an "at will" employee. Also, I don't think the United States has any laws yet against mobbing, like they do in some European Countries. Are there really any legal avenues for me to pursue here? "Quitting" seems like I'm empowering them to continue to do this to others. I really think we need to find solutions for this problem collectively. I'm sure countless others have been on the receiving end of this particular form of workplace abuse. I wish them all a speedy recovery. Again thanks to all who responded so far. I found myself shedding healing tears while reading some posts. It's sad to think my only recourse is to run from it. But this sad truth has become self evident already.

Anyone Else Experience Mobbing?
There is another side to me that feels we should really create an awareness about this too. Bring it into the light. Until we can identify it readily as it occurs, we have no chances of stopping this from happening to others after I leave. It is an insidious poison. Let's talk about this so others may learn.

Anyone Else Experience Mobbing?
As a nurse, I have seen it occur at all my workplaces. Maybe I have been unlucky? However, as I contemplate leaving this job, it has actually led me down another path too. That of leaving nursing completely because of it. Give me hope! Are the workplaces without mobbing?

Anyone Else Experience Mobbing?
I know I need to leave and will begin job hunting. However, I am still wondering how often this occurs to other nurses? I am also curious to know other people's experiences with it, and how they resolved their situations.
