What's Your Best Nursing Ghost Story?
I've been a travel nurse for 20+ years and most facilities have some disturbing occurrence. Currently I'm at a hospice facility and occasionally I get a feeling that I'm not alone, although I've never 'knowingly' seen an apparition. However.... I do have an experience. My patient was a young woman dying of cancer and getting very close, her husband had a habit of leaving his shoes outside the door. Noticing them there I started in to talk with him and the door was slowly opening a little. As I went in the husband was at bedside and seeing me said "I think she's gone" and I concluded that she had. The husband immediately left, and I called the funeral home for transport. Meanwhile, I had past the room twice and the door was standing open of which I closed it on both occasions (this room dosen't have that tendency- normally). Later, I asked the cna why she had left the door open has we had visitors there for other patients. She said that she too had closed it and thought I had left the door open. I had assumed the husband had been opening the door when I went in to speak with him, but now realizing he was about fifteen feet away by the bed. This has not reoccurred, so strange. I do believe the woman's spirit wanted the door open, after the body was gone it didn't seem to matter. What do you think?

that's a hell of a good feeling isn't it. i get that urge to be gone after three months even if it's a good assignment. travelers in this prof. are a unique lot, we hate it on the one hand but one the other we love it more. kinda wierd...another wierd thing is why do the "mods" want to filter out useful information? simulair to removing a hazzard sign from the highway. i dunno.

Am I too old to dorm on campus?
my initial reaction of being too old for dormlife at age 24 struck me as funny. it should actually help as you have more maturity, the only issue is if you will be able to sleep, which is all you will be doing there. accelerated bsn programs are very busy. i checked an agenda and realized there were no bathroom breaks scheduled for that year, as i could eat a snack on the run to the next class or lab. point is there isn't any free time, your life is on hold much more so than regular college courses. not saying it can't be done, but good luck

Making the Move to Florida
no wonder i get blank stares from nurse recruiters - however,$19 when i was a new grad would have been fantastic. but now.. i can,t see showing up. sorry, i have no info regarding tampa areas to live & work. there are i'm sure an array of possibilities and if you have any experience at all don;t settle for less than $25 w/benes(staff). that's low but this is florida.

Ever work at one of these Fla. hospitals?
i work in jupiter med center. it's okay..depends on where you work (tele) is a hell. the staff are semi-friendly, fairly good help (cnas, secretaries), chg nurse is free but don't seem to do much. one of the worse computer systems. the pharmacy is fast, responsive to questions. the hospital is clean. the lab...you really have to watch closely for timed labs. same with radiology. docs are a mix, but overall are good. the pay is so-so. my greatest concern is with the high acuity and the high ratio (7-8 pts) with the rest of job responsablities. whatelse, it's a job..i'm looking for greener pastures.

on the positive side, know that you have the option to leave. this is one of the greatest benefit inherent as a traveler. i too have assignments where i've marked the days off a caleder...i empathize with you. keep to the fundamentals and you will be okay. leave a mark when you go, let the hr person know why your so eager to leave and won't be back, and will warn fellow travelers off...now where is this place?

6 Month Vacation? Possible?

Ever work at one of these Fla. hospitals?
jfk or any of the hca hospitals are thumbs down... patient load maxed with no help (that you can find). i've heard good things for naples and ft. myers but pay very mediocre. orlando pay better - job wise i can't say. health first (melbourne area & cocco beach) had been great but have recently change attitude to nurses as just "meat" (per some friends still there). in the interview ask real questions and read between the lines in the responses. good luck and have a good winter season.

Do you clean desk and hands before test?
think of it as boot camp! i didn't do that per se, but every clinical was as severe as the military. the only thing not regulated was underwear - i wore bart simpson drawers under my whites. the only thing i can prescribe is if this is what you want then do it - most important pray before test and later before you clock in to your shift..i'm serious.
