I don't want to be a doctor. I am happy with my role as a nurse practitioner, but I want a terminal degree. I also plan on teaching at some point so a DNP makes sense to me. The idea is that we all should have the same degree as an entry into practice at an advanced level. More and more professions are moving to this idea

They have to give him treatment in his language. They can lose their Medicare medicaid funding if they do get someone in there and quick. The apps may be good for a few things but he has the right to understand and be understood. Demand an in person translator. That is what my hospitals do immediately. I think one has to be present within 24 hours of admission.

As an APRN, I have to correct nurses and techs all of the time because they refer to me as "the doctor". Their argument is that the psych patients do not understand that I can prescribe their meds. I think sometimes patient education is the key to helping people understand our different roles.

I see schizophrenics with active hallucinations and all of the above problems. It is what I was trained to do as a psych np. But if one of them complains of an ear ache I refer to medical. There is still a need for psychiatrists just like there is still a need for family practice docs even though we are trained to treat the patients too.

Had a 30 something year d patient at our psych hospital last month with mental status changes also had lesions that his pcp was telling him was eczema or something like that. Ended up being syphlis transferred him out for iv abx.

I bet this hospital belongs to a huge corporate chain of behavioral health hospitals. The facility I worked at before becoming an APRN had census like this. The acute unit is staffed 1:15 or 1:whatever the census is some days and teacher count in the matrix so the nurse loses some techs on day shift. Crazy stuff when they want no restraints or seclusion a on top of that.

My 10 year old autistic son has cvs. I thought I would end up being investigated for munchaussen by proxy we have spent so much time getting ivf. Haldol is the only thing that has ever helped even tho our pcp thought I was nuts when I suggested it.

I would get copies of my charges resolution of my case etc and go talk to your state board of nursing. They will let you know. Your school may also counsel you on it but I found the most relief by talking to the board. I have a dwi and a misdemeanor hot check from 20 years ago and have since been licensed as an APN and given authority to write prescriptions.

Family education has been shown to be effective in reducing re hospitalization rates in many mental disorders, but this does not mean these people need a guardian. They just need family members who understand and are willing to learn.

Honestly I don't see what the patients mental health had to do with this scenario. I think examining one's feelings about patients with mental health histories may be in order. Patients who are in pain tend to be agitated and verbally aggressive. I know I am not in the best frame of mind when I am in pain. To the apap issue call provider for a change.

I was going to ask this same question. Here in arkansas it just recently changed to where APRNs can bill for all psych services provided by telepsych to medicaid.

Going the cc route to even just get your RN is going to help you maximize your GI bill. You are better off staying away from places where you even have a doubt in your mind. I am a recently graduated PMHNP who went the CC route and I made it just fine and probably in record time since I graduated with my ASN in 2009. Take some college classes at a cc to get your feet wet see how you are going to do. You will need pre reqs for nursing start with those (make sure they will transfer). Most colleges don't accept an act score from 12 years ago so you may have to take a different entrance test at the community college. If your grades in your pre reqs are good you will be able to go anywhere you want to go!

The facility I worked at outlined the dosing schedule for orders like this in our policies. TID dosing for an adult unit of patients was 8,2,8. If the doc wanted it q8hrs then he ordered it that way. I think most places outline this in policies and procedures.

Starting RN salary: 2009 18.50 ending salary was 21.50 I quit last April to finish my MNSc. I graduated in May as a PMHNP I just turned down an offer for 75k. Lowest starting salary for my class so far is the girl who owes the VA for her ed and she is starting at 85k the rest are making over 100k. At least you know they are HIV + you will encounter many patients who do not know their HIV status. Use your precautions like you are supposed to and you will be fine. I have never seen someone double glove it almost seems rude and disrespectful. Idk I am just a psych nurse and encounter HIV pts on a daily basis. But I am not in contact with bodily fluids

Not enough ceu reimbursement either. Most places offer 2000-2500 and paid time off for them that does not count as your pto time

When my twins were born they were preemies who did well and left the hospital pretty quick. Quick is not always better so we spent a lot of time seeing the PNP at their clinic. She was the one that recognized my PPD she was AWESOME!!! Switch gears to learning my son had autism and being treated by a spectacular PMHNP who worked hard at med management and therapy with us in a world where she could have just been a prescriber. I knew I had found what I wanted to do and I made it happen. I always knew even in nursing school for my adn that floor nursing was not where I would land. If I had listened to the naysayers oh don't do psych that isn't nursing or you have to have worked as an RN for 5 years to do well in school for an APRN. I would not be where I am today. Board certified as of yesterday all in the space of 7 years total (2009 ASN, 2010 BSN and 2014 MNSc)

I had that tote for nursing school also. Now I use it like luggage for the lake or short trips. So yep it is durable considering I bought mine in 2007.

I graduated in 2009 and worked as a psych RN until 2003 when I had to quit to focus on my PMHNP program. I just graduated and I feel I was leaps ahead of the people with no psych experience.

She could have discussed the issue at the hospital instead of avoiding getting the baby rehydrated. Obviously the doc thought the baby was bad enough to send to the hospital. Maybe she didn't discuss the formula with the doc but she could have discussed it with the hospital. Or even taken the formula of choice with her. There's more to this story.
