I am doing a speech on communication in nursing for my communications class. I would like to open with a gripping story about how a lack of good communication with a patient led to an avoidable bad outcome. I have been searching online but have not found any news articles about such an event. Can anyone think of any examples that may have been published somewhere? It would be a big help :)

I have never done ROMs or seen any of my fellow CNA's do them in any of the 3 places I have worked. I agree that it is important and should be done but how can you when there are other people are waiting to go to the bathroom and you have already skipped your lunch break? It is sad. I would not feel comfortable in most cases doing them because no one else does and I would not want to hurt them.

Although the academic portion does not transfer, I have heard that the experience of being a CNA makes it easier to get through the classes because it is all stuff you see in action already instead of being new and scary. It also gives you relavent work experience so it should be easier to get a job when you graduate.

I would wait if you are able to keep on as you are. Maybe take some medical terminology or something like you said. I just got on a 3 year waiting list, but I have to do all my pre requasites so It should keep me busy in the meantime.

I am a CNA, 32 hours right now, but I am looking for a weekend option job before classes start. I would make the same money and work only 2 days. If that works out I may study full time instead of half time.

I am desperately seeking such a shift before I start school, but they are hard to find.people really hang on to them. Congratulations on the new job!

I would just do it if you are worried. When I took the class it was just a one time 2 hour ordeal, no big thing.

I am starting A&P 1 in January also. It will be my first class since high school (11 years ago) so I am nervous:stone:stone:stone. I took biology and chemistry in High school so I am not required to take them again and I do not want to waste time and money. I got Anatomy and Physiology for the complete idiot and I am studying it. I read each chapter and take notes and make online flashcards. I hope it helps I hear it is a really hard class! I did not try to get the text book because I don't want to burn myself out on it before we even begin. Plus this way I think will help me more because When I begin to recognise things that I learned I will feel like I have "outside information" or something. It just seems like it might turn on more light bulbs for me that way. I am actually finding it really interesting! Definately do rounds and politely ask them to correct the problem before they go next time. In the places I have worked this is the rule you should do rounds anyway just to make sure that everyone is safe and has their alarms and so on because you are taking over that liability. If this does not take care of it then you should report neglect, and document it.

I am considering going to Everest (Grand Rapids, MI) for my LPN, but I do want to go on for my RN. I have been reading scary posts from people that say you would have to start over because the credits wont transfer. Is it possible to enter an LPN to RN program after attending everest. Would I have to do alot of extra classes?

You have to find out the COA or total cost of attendance. This is what is estimated your cost will be including living expences. Your school should have and estimated COA and this is the maximum you can borrow. I think it used to be that privvate loans would let you borrow more, but now limit you to your estimated COA. I will be attending a community college and their COA is only $12000 and since I am out of area my tuition will be over $4000. I was hoping to borrow enough to cover my meager wages while I study, but I think I am restricted to the $8000 minus books and supplies.

I wonder this myself because I live in Michigan and jobs are hard to come by. There do seem to always be openings for LPNs and RNs though.

Don't beat yourself up too much. Earnings is a big factor. It is the reason we work and it deserves consideration. I have been a CNA for a few years now and I really love my job. I am pretty sure I will enjoy my job less as an RN but my family simply needs more money. I have observed the nurses I work with and I'm pretty sure I can do it and do it well. I have looked into other career choices and this is the only one I can get into without going to school for many years and although it is not a guaranteed job, I am more confident finding a good paying job with this path than with some other choices. At this point in my life I can not afford to put my time and money into school without having it pay off. I am compassionate, and hard working, I know what the job entails and I will do it well. BUT the money is THE reason for me wanting to be an RN. I have had no "calling" from any higher powers. I am not ashamed of it. I was also in customer service for 10 years and it has helped me tremendously an a CNA the skills cross over well, and I think that is what will help me be a better nurse. I took the CNA class at Walker Medical. It seemed good although I dont have anything to compare to. I have been working as a CNA for 2 years now and rarely meet people who went anywhere else.

Medical assistant- 10 months, $11,000 for school CNA- 3 weeks $600 for school This is what was available to me so I became a CNA. I always have a job. I know MAs who do not and end up working as CNAs. From my online research it looks like the pay is similar. Think about it. How many doctors offices are there and how many MAs can each one use? Now think of how many CNAs it takes to care for all the people in all the hospitals and nursing homes 24/7 365 days a year.

Good for you! I took mine last Friday and got a 91. We only took the math, grammar, reading, and vocab. Also fractions and proportions and percentages. They were all really simple though, just know how to ad, multiply, simplify and divide fractions, and write them as a proportion. the grammar and reading was discouraging sometimes because sometimes there were more than one answer that would fit, or none that seemed quite right and you just have to pick the best one.

They gave me mine immediately when I finished my test.

Hi Michelle! I am starting my pre reqs in January as well. I have not been to school since high school 11 years ago! I am really nervous, but I took my HESI today and got 90+ in all areas so I think I will be OK. I have two girls 16 months and 5 years. My youngest should be in Kindergarten when I enter the program so I can still have extra time with her now. It sounds like you are really well prepared. Good luck!

I was going to take the LPN and go for RN later (RNs make A LOT more money and have more choices and opportunities) But at my school That means getting on another waiting list and taking many extra classes, so Now I am just going to go strait for my RN. Some schools have a ladder program, so you have to get the LPN classes first, but mine has alot of seperate RN and LPN classes. I would be wasting my time with almost 20 credits of LPN stuff.

I drew vital signs an one of my skills and the peorson had a very hard to hear BP. It was not accurate and I failed. I passed easily the second time and am an excelent CNA and I love my job. Good luck and don't worry to much!

I have pretty much decided to wait for the ADN as well. It takes almost 2 full time semesters extra to do the LPN first, and I do want to be an RN eventually. Have you looked into nursing homes? I am a CNA and work with a quite a few LPNs and RNs alike who are fresh from school.

I am getting on that wait list right now! I take my HESI in one week, and That is my last requirement. I do have to take all the prereqs so that will keep me busy part time. Is it really 3 years? More? Less?

Yes I have looked into all these loans, but they all say that you can not borrow past the schools "total cost of attendance". How I understand it I would not be able to get more than the $12,000 total no mater where I get the loans. I only talked to the one lady on the phone who seemed confused so I think I will speak to them in person next week when I am there taking my HESI. I was just wondering if anyone had had experience with this.

At my community college you just have to pass the HESI and a background check to get on the waiting list. I don't think GPA has anything to do with it.
