Is school really a lot of work?
I am in school now and I have a homeschooled 6 yr old. I decided to go back to school this year and was able to transfer in a lot of prior credit. Fortunately, I have been able to take my pre-reqs at night when hubby is home. I have also taken online classes; it's still a balancing act, but it saves so much time! I have been home with my daughter her entire life and this year she will go to daycare for the first time because my college does not offer nursing lectures at night. Thankfully, I will be leaving her in a loving environment with a wonderful lady I met at church. I say go for it if you have a good support system. There are so many options for going back to school. You could enroll part-time, take night classes, online classes, or even take the CLEP exams for a few subjects. It's such a small amount of time to sacrifice for your lifelong dream. Most people look back on their lives and regret the things they didn't do - not the things they did do! Good Luck!

Brilliant in lecture, Horrible in LAB....
I know exactly what youre going through! I have taken 2 lab exams and made 2 B's (thank God for extra credit!) and 2 lecture exams with mid to high A's. I have a 4.0 and can see this class causing my GPA to tank. I think it's just test anxiety coupled with having to master a large volume of info in such a short time. I struggled with labs more last semester because I didn't see how they were relevant. When I find the relevance and can apply it to real life, I tend to do better. I hope that by this Fall when I go into my nursing class I will be over some of this anxiety! Study hard and stick with it - good luck!

Study Habbits
REPEAT AFTER ME...Reading is my new best friend, Reading is my new best friend, reading is.... I never had to take a pre-entrance exam for my nursing program, but I did have to take placement tests before taking my pre-reqs. Honestly, there was no way to prepare for that. There's no way around it- you are going to have to read. There are some other study aids out there that can help you. I like to find online tutorials that I can just watch and listen. Alot of the major universities have links to flash animation tutorials. My textbooks also have online resources with study aids. If you have alot of free time you can find some pretty interesting podcasts! Ah - don't forget flash cards! Good luck and stick with it. It's only a little suffering for the great reward you get at the end!

Resume help please!
1. Write the current name of the facility and reference the name of the facility back when you worked there Stedman Medical Center (formerly known as Carter Community Hospital) 2. I would focus my resume on my skills rather than work history. Highlight your professional accomplishments and expertise what you would bring to the job. However, if you were called in for an interview and asked about the gap - just be honest! It's not shameful or a crime to take care of your family!

A&P I Summer 2007
For me, this load would be overwhelming, but with good time management and study habits, doable. My English class required us to write lots of essays and research papers. I consider English one of my better subjects and still found it a challenge to take this class with Micro and Chem. Otherwise - this probably would have been a "cake" class. Math was never my strongest subject so I had to get a tutor - and spent what seemed like tons of time burning the midnight oil on homework. I am taking A&P now and devote a considerable amount of time on it. There is so much to memorize for this class that I find I need at least 2 hours for every hour I am in class just to keep my head above water. There are people who take on fulltime class loads and work but I don't see how they do it without sacrificing their sanity! I have my hands full enough with being a fulltime student, homeschooling my daughter and staying semi on top of household chores! I would suggest evaluating your time management skills and study habits before taking on this load. You will have to sacrifice alot of personal leisure time, time with friends and family and just plain get used to having a messy house! If you are determined enough, you can do anything you set your mind to do. Good luck!

Share Your Funniest Patient Stories...
I'm relaying a story told to me by someone who worked the phones at one of our local hospitals. We live in a college town so I would assume that this call came in from a couple of college kids. The call comes in and the Operator answers the Caller: O: XXXXX Medical Center, how may I help you? C: Um...I have sort of an emergency... O: Ma'am, if you have a medical emergency you'll need to call 911. C: No!! I can't... O: Why not? C: Ok, I'll just say it. My boyfrind and I were fooling around and he has my d*ld0 stuck in him. It's like it just got sucked up there! He can't get it out, so I need instructions on how to retrieve it. O: Ma'am, your going to have to bring him into ER C: Ok - *click* Ten minutes later she calls again. O: xxxxx Medical Center, how may I help you? C: Hey, it's me again. Is this the guy I talked to earlier? O: Yes ma'am. But I need to reiterate that I can not help you over the phone. Your boyfriend is going to have to come in to the ER. C: Yeah, I know. I tried to get it out but he started screaming. I just had a question about insurance. O: I don't know if I can help you with that. C: Well....I was wondering if my boyfiend's treatment would be filed with his insurace company. O: If he receives treatment, and I suspect he will, it will be filed with insurance. C: Ok, well, how will it be worded? O: *laughing* I really don't know, ma'am. C: *click* He doesn't know if they ever had the nerve to come into the ER. I laugh everytime I think about it. . .

Nurses/Nursing Students:What advice would you give someone starting Nursing School?
LOL! Too true! My husband did laundry for the first time in I don't know how long last night b/c I had my nose in a book all week studying!

What do you do with DISRUPTIVE classmates?
First of all I would find a different seat! If your seats are assigned, ask to be moved. Tell your teacher that she is interfering with your ability to hear the lectures. Perhaps you could gently, but firmly TELL the girl to hush so that you can learn! Or make a specticle of her by asking your instructor to repeat something because, "someone behind me was talking AGAIN and I couldn't hear you." I have this same problem in my A&P class. Usually the teacher can coral the "talkers" in so I haven't had to say anything. Good Luck with it and I hope it works out for you!

I can't stand MICRO!!!!
Wow - you sound like me! My first quiz in A&P I got a 6/10 - because I wasn't specific enough in my answers! Uhhhggg! I've never made a grade that low - Thank God it was only a quiz! I know it can be tough - but just hang in there. I did struggle with some of MICRO, but found the class very interseting overall. It can get really interesting.
-
Ughhh....Microbiology!!
I fell your pain...lol. I'm in A&P and am floundering - not because the material is particularly hard-but because I am required to master it in such a short period of time. Micro is not easy and it does require alot of reading and studying. Being that it is a summer class-you have less time to learn everything. I would study concepts in chunks. I used the web site associated with my text book. It offered flash cards, practice quizzes, outlines and study guides. I also Googled topics and researched them when I struggled. As for the professor, ask if you can record him. That way you can listen and re-listen to things you miss in class. Also, do not be afraid to ask the professor to repeat him/her self. If it is inconvenient during class, approach him/her after class and ask for clarification. Usually, instructors are very accomodating.
-
Will this be too hard??
Definately not! There are many concepts in both classes that you will need to master in order to pass. I would suggest taking one at a time. I just took Micro in the Fall and it was alot of work. I passed, but had to devote alot of time to it. I neglegted my other 3 classes for Micro, but thankfully they were not intense. I'm taking A&P right now and in order to keep a passing grade I have to study at least 2 hrs for every 1 hour I am in class. Granted the course is in summer and is shorter, I am sure that one would have to devote a considerable amount of time to learn the body systems. If you do take both be prepared for alot of work. You will not be able to have much of a social life! On a positive note - there isn't alot of critical thinking involved with these to subjects. I'd say 90% is memorization. If you are a very driven and disciplined student who has alot of spare time for study, then it may be do-able .

Is it too late for me?
I'm 26 and will start Nursing in the fall. Hopefully if there are no set backs I will have my RN by age 28. Most of the other people in my program range from their 20's to 40's. I wouldn't worry about age - I would focus on getting a good education. If you were in the hospital would you really care how old your nurse is or care about the quality of the care she provides?

A&P I Summer 2007
Oh my goodness! I have a hard time with the slides too! It's like she cut a square out of a map and we are supposed to look at it and tell her where it's from! I don't have a problem with companct bone, blood or neurons. I'm lost when it comes to epithelial and muscel tissue. My test is Wednesday! Good luck to you!

Second-career? what was the first?
I have always worked in Non-Profit organizations. I start Nursing classes this Fall.

A&P nightmare!!!
Nurse2BStacey- Not at all! I do want to be prepared for the rigors of nursing, but without the all the drama this teacher brings! We've only had 3 sessions and the class already has nicknamed her, "the nazi." My Bio/Chem teacher was tough-yet compassionate. I have heard so much bragging about how instructors at this school want to help you succeed. I know I can't let one bad experience ruin it. I'm typically not a complainer, but this is ridiculous! As for tape recording - we are prohibited from it. Thanks for the pearls of wisdom. I suppose I better start training to jump through hoops for the next 10 weeks!
