How many patients is full time in home health
Hello, I am currently on a telemetry unit. Have been a nurse for about a year and a half on tele. Really wanting to do home health because I am a single mom and need to be with my kids when they are not in school to help with homework and sick of being tired all the time with working nights. My question is how many patients per week is considered full time? I am going to be moving to Chicago soon and I know that HH pays 50 per patient. Would 25 patients per week be too much to handle? Would home health work for a single mom? Thanks

Safe Nurse Patient Ratio
Hello, I am a new graduate and currently working in a medsurg/tele unit on nights where the nurse patient ratio is 8 patients/1. I am not by myself yet but when I am I feel like Im going to be really overwhelmed. Is this an unsafe patient ratio? How can I manage 8 patients by myself being new and all?

I Passed the NCLEX!!!

Thinking about nursing school but I'm scared!!!! Need advice...
Nursing is a great field to get into. You wont have to worry as much about not having job security. As far as nursing school, there is a tremendous amount of studying to do. I have 2 kids and am almost done (in my last semester) so its even a bit tougher when you have a family but it can be done. It is possible as long as you put it in your head that you wont have much of a life but just mostly studying, and between semesters you can relax, but during semester you just hit the books like your life depends on it. So good luck and whatever it is you decide if you have a strong will to do it, it can be done!

For Fun - Things You Want to Buy Once You're a Nurse
- How is nursing school different than regular classes like math, history, english etc?
NS is different because of the tests. The tests are different than any other tests you have taken in your life. Its about picking the best answer, the answer that takes priority, multiple multiple.- my husband....the jerk......sorry this is a rant :)
You can do it. If you want this bad enough, nothing will get in your way. Like Randy Pausch said "Brick walls are for people who dont want it bad enough." Do not let him get in your way, it can be done with your families support.- Waking up early again for clinicals
Congrats on your first semester! Good luck to ya!- Waking up early again for clinicals
I always have trouble falling asleep at night. Most of the time I have to take a sleeping pill but then I have to deal with that hangover. So you cant win but only 16 more weeks for me of having to wake up early, then its off to my night owl shift .- Waking up early again for clinicals
Im totally going to be a night nurse too. Good thing there are night owls like us to cover the night shifts.- Waking up early again for clinicals
I am the biggest night owl. During Christmas break Ive been staying up until 3am. Now school is starting in a week and I have to start waking up early for clinicals (6am!) Any other night owls out there? How do you transition to waking up early or the early birds how do you do it by coping with waking up early? Im getting in a lot of sleep because I know Im about to be sleep deprived!- Spring 2009 Graduating Class
Best of luck to you. I also will graduate this May!!!!! Congrats to all!!!- Last Semester!!!! What to study?
I am also in my last semester, and of coorifice Im scared! Its the end and I feel like I should be studying over break! Good luck to you.- Please help.....I'm worried about NS
Well when I started NS my kids were 2 and 3(graduate this May). I did(and still do) have childcare but I recieve childcare vouchers. Could you maybe qualify for vouchers? I am the type of person who hates to put my kids in daycare so I was suprised on how much help I recieved from my family. The way I studied was my kids would watch tv and I would study while they would watch, or when they went to sleep I would study. As far as how hard nursing school is, it is not like AP or Micro, these classes are based on memorization. Nursing school has a different way of testing students. Their tests are set up like by asking you pick the "best" answer out of the four choices. Sometimes there are two choices that seem to be so right. They may ask you to prioritize for example "what would you do first." there may be multiple multiple questions, and to get credit its all or nothing. You should buy an NCLEX book and practice doing some questions, because in order to pass nursing school you have to figure out how to answer questions the "NCLEX" way. Especially when you get to medsurg, you have to know how to answer questions this way. When I got into my first Medsurg course our school just expected us to know how to answer these type of questions. Read, read, and read like your life depends on it. Someone told me this once and I think it really helped for me to understand how passionate and hardworking you have to be in order to pass nursing school. Good luck, you can do it with strong determination! If you have a strong will you will do it!- How long did it take to you
I havent finished nursing school yet, I will this May. But it took me two years to finish the prereqs because I really only took like 1-2 classes a semester. Then the two year program, so 4 years all together. Ive never failed a class but for my friends who have, its really unfortunate, they get on with their lives by either taking the class over or finding another school but most people don't give up, even after failing a class.- Needing Study Help for Cardiac Dysrhythmias!
this is an excellent site, thanks so much! it really explains the types of solutions.- Mom of a 7 year old starting last semester....feel like a bad mother
I have a 4 year old and a 5 year old and I am about to start my last semester in two weeks. Ive also felt guilty at times for not spending time with them throughtout school but I always make it an issue to tell them I love them and to take them out to places they love like McDonalds(play land) or take them to buy a toy at the dollar store. I think that we are so busy as moms but like they say quality time is sometimes better than the amount we have with them. I think that we should tell ourselves that going through nursing school is best for the whole family and not to feel guilty because we are showing the best example to our children by reading all the time and being excited when we get good grades. So I def. feel you on the feeling guilty but we just have to be excited that we only have 1 more semester, and I know I owe me and my kids a big vacation after graduation!- Stuff for clinicals
pen light(foleys, pupils) pens tons of pens for charting, clipboard, notepad,sissors- Med Surg....... what to expect???
When you get questions about delegating to CNA's remember that the CNA cannot do any tasks that involve critical thinking or assessments, they can only do... such as take BP or temp, or serve the meal etc.- Med Surg....... what to expect???
This is true, but I would say that the first medsurg you take is really hard. After you successfully complete your first medsurg, then the second is easier because you should have a better understanding on how to do the nclex style questions. I havent taken my third medsurg yet, this next semester I will. But really read your medsurg book. I tried to read my chapters word for word if I had time. Especially if its your first medsurg class then def. spend more time reading the chapters to get an understanding of medsurg. I remember my first test was on preop, intraoperative, post-op, and I thought the chapters were pretty easy reading so I kinda skimmed but when the test came there were such detailed questions on there like, what do you do if you patient has stomach pains after surgery? And the answer was to ambulate them (to get the bowels moving) so really look into your chapters and read about the nursing assessments, implementations etc... - How is nursing school different than regular classes like math, history, english etc?
