Funniest/strangest dementia patient stories
Best story I've got. Super sweet 80 something patient who had some OCD. Things on the floor irritated her, like lint, paper scraps, etc. We had a gold pipe covering on the carpeted area that she would spend hours each day picking at. Well, one morning, while we were scrambling to get 0600 meds done, she woke up and unknown to use, had a code brown in her attends. Some leaked out, onto the white tile floor...so of course this contrast caught her eye. Before I could stop her, she reached down and stuck her hand right in it! Then, she walks out of her tiled room, into the carpeted hallway and flings it off her hand with the most disgusted look on her face. GREAT MOMENT! Same patient, a different morning was absolutely convinced she needed to stand on the table. We'd pull chairs away, distract her, etc...but before you knew it, she was climbing on the chairs toward the table again! I miss those days!

I violated HIPAA while talking about the news!
Did you care for the victim or the people tried for the crime? What medical relationship did you have to these people? I you didn't violate HIPPA if it is published knowledge and you didn't give medical details that were not in the court records.

Nursing school help
I live in the Springfield MO area and all the hospitals around here offer 2-3,000 a semester in exchange for 1 year. Call the hospitals. The ones around here had stuff all over school to fill out the scholarship forms and a recruiter come talk to us about it.

pregnant with large fibroid?
We had a patient a few months ago with this same issue. This pregnancy turned out great with healthy baby girl, delivered c-section because the fibroid prevented pelvic progression. She had a previous still birth a couple years before that though. Your doctor will of course have much more knowledge than I on this topic. I wish you the best!!!

Colour-coded hospital bracelets
We just had a new policy with colored arm bands in place. We have a yellow-ish typenex band for the blood, just like before. We just added a yellow band which represents fall risk, a purple band which indicates a DNR status and red which is of course allergies. I've heard a lot of positivie about the system.

Thank you for the suggestions!! So far, all I know about is the text book as far as suggested materials. The semester starts in a couple weeks, so I'll know this week for sure what other material we'll be using.

Needing Study Help for Cardiac Dysrhythmias!
Hello everyone! I'm a senior nursing student about to begin my cardiac/respiratory rotation and I need some tips and suggestions. I've heard from recent grads that the dysrhythmias are difficult to learn and I was wondering if there were any helpful materials to learn the basics with. I appreciate all your suggestions!

Change room, staff room, gym, locker room?
My unit (L&D) has both a break room and a locker room. The break room has a table, microwave, fridge, 2 couches and a chair. It also has a tv, and the makings for coffee, tea and hot cocoa. All the other units on the hospital where I have ever had clinicals have break rooms with similar ammenities. Our locker room just has lockers and its where we change into our hospital scrubs. I'm sad to hear that not all hospitals provide this for their employees. When you're on break, you deserve to actually relax!

I am being written up!
It seems silly to me that you're being written up for this. So you were supposed to do chart checks and missed it. Obviously the nurse behind you wasn't using their "5 rights" when it came time to give meds. That is one of the first things we've learned in nursing school....she should have checked the MAR!!! Had she, she would have found the discrepancy and verified the orders. Don't worry too much on this one, like you said the patient was fine.

Consent to drug test OB/L&D Patients
Thanks for all your input. To answer some of your questions. They run the simple 7 test when we ask and yes. Yes, they are charged for the test. I would guess 75% or more of our patients are Medicaid so they probably don't care too much about that. We have a pretty high rate of positive drug tests when we're suspicious-mostly cannibas. I think maybe a drug test should be standard in triage and even if we had a consent, they would know everyone gets tested. Like one of you said-its about treating the baby and knowing what to expect with them. I'd like to know if we're going to fight withdrawl issues with them first.

Consent to drug test OB/L&D Patients
Currently, the hospital I work at performs urine drug tests to patients who meet certain requirements like no prenatal care, questionable appearance or behavior, low birth weight, still birth or miscarriage, any hx of use...you get the point. The patients are not informed they have even been tested unless the test comes back positive-then the social worker is called and she's who tells them. A new policy is in the process of being passed about having the patients sign a consent for this testing. If the patient refuses, they plan to test the baby without permission after birth with the refusal as "reasonable cause". I don't see the point in the policy (I support the random tests), but I was wondering if anyone else works where they have this rule?

Being Rushed through Orientation!!!!
I understand completely! I took a new job as an OB Assistant in the hospital where I have my clinicals for school. I had one day of training for the floor and one day as unit secretary then I was thrown to the wolves and on my own. I am still confused about a lot of things and have trouble getting help some times. Its very frustration to have less that par confidence while trying to do patient care.
