What you described sounds exactly like the place I am currently working out and let me tell you, there is no 4 days of shadowing a nurse unless your are working during the week. I work the weekends and shadowed a nurse for 2 days and I'm still trying to figure things out. I wish you the best!

I'm in a Dallas suburb and at the facility I work at we have a total of 90 beds. 14 are classified for geriatric's, 34 are classified for adolescents (12 beds as adolescent overflow) and the remaining 42 beds are classified for acute care, a detox unit and high functioning psych patients. I work nights on the geriatric unit with 1 to 2 tech's depending on the census or the acuity of the patients. If I have a 1:1 patient I may have an extra tech or LVN. All the other units have only 1 nurse and one MHT. There have been alot of shady things going on here. The unit I worked on last night is usually the kids unit which holds 22 patients, but yesterday they decided to change that since the census for the kids unit was 7. Instead they housed the boys and girls together in one unit (against policy) instead of being separated that way they could admit more adult patients. Two weekends ago they apparently lost count of the census and admitted more patients than they had beds. And to top it off the nurse that was scheduled for the kids unit called in and the ADON requested another nurse from another unit pull the meds for those patients and let the MHT's give the meds! Needless to say this place is unsafe and I'm in a pickle!!! What should I do???

This is my everyday life at the psych hospital I work at. I had 15 patients last night with 1 tech and by the end of my shift this morning I still had 3 more admissions coming in making it a total of 18 patients for 1 nurse!!! :banghead::banghead:

I'd like to know the answer also, because where I work the doctors order the same cocktail you described and I also thought benadryl not to be compatible with many things. I would certainly give the benadryl in a separate syringe.

Bariq - Thanks for the prayers because I truly need it. It's been hard trying to find my first RN job without any experience. I pray that you get an interview for the OR position as well.

I graduated in December 2010, passed the boards in February of this year and have sent over 60 or so applications. I have had multiple rejections, 2 resumes forwarded to hiring managers (didn't get an interview or the job), 1 phone interview by a talent scout used by the company (did not get that job even though they accept new grads) and I finally had an IN FACE interview for my dream job as an OR nurse (Internship does not start till July). In the meantime, I had an interview last week with a mental health facility for a Psych Nurse position. I was offered the job on the spot and will start orientation next week and work PRN on the weekends. Although, this is not my dream job it seems better than the alternative of not having a job in this economy. I've heard stories of of people graduating a year ago and still not able to find a job because they have no experience. I'm in Dallas, TX. I hope your prospects look better.

Had my interview yesterday with the OR educator and the Nurse supervisor and I think it went pretty well. She was really excited with the fact that I spent more than 80 clinical hours in the OR during my last semester of nursing school. She only asked me two basic questions like if I every had a conflict with a nurse or someone else in the hospital and how did I handle it. She said they only have 4 spots available. She said she had an overwhelming response to the ad and that she would hope to make her final decision by the end of the month since the program does not start till the first week of July. Wish me Luck because this is truly my dream job!!!

Well, since she set up the interview by email I did send her a quick thank you. She mentioned yesterday that she had an overwhelming response to the position(only 4 spots available) and still had people to interview and would hope to make a decision some time at the end of the month since the internship does not start till the first week of July. I will most definitely follow up with a thank you card in the mail.

MorningLight - what all did you say in the email? I had an interview yesterday and it's my dream job, but I don't know what to write. I have it all in my head and just can't get it out (if that makes any sense)

I have an interview for an OR internship next week and was wondering if anyone could give me some advise of what to expect during the interview process? I took a job as a Psych nurse, but it's not my dream job. I'm really hoping a get the OR position because they are hard to get.

I looked on line Saturday and found that Hill regional hospital in Hillsboro and Lake Granbury hospital will actually considered new grads for Med/Surg positions so applied at both places. Also, Lake Pointe Medical Center in Rowlett has an opening for RN internships that start in July.

Temple is very far from Arlington.

I agree with CrunchRN with the job market in North Texas. I graduated 12/10 with an ADN and passed the boards in February with still no luck in finding a job. Most of the rejections I have received from the hospitals say that they went with an internal candidate. I also have a friend who was rejected by one hospital for the L&D internship even though she has her certification in PALS, NRP, & ACLS.

I'm in the same boat as you are. Graduated December 2010 and passed the NCLEX February 2011 and have no true hospital experience other than clinicals. I'm located in Dallas and am very frustrated as well.

Congrats to you!!! I finished school in December and passed the boards this February with still no luck in finding a job in Dallas. Every place I apply declines me because I have no experience. How can I get experience if no one will hire me???

Can someone please tell me the difference between client goals and outcome criteria? Are they one in the same or are they different? Can anyone give me an example of each one? I'm having trouble with this part on my nursing care plan. Thanks

I was told by Ann last month that Success Camp is usually given two weeks before schools starts. I guess this gives people time to finish up any loose ends they may have before starting the program.

DON'T GIVE UP!!! I didn't get accepted at first, but then low and behold I got a call on April 30th offering me a spot for the Fall '09 class. I of course took it!!! My school doesn't tell you that you're on the wait list so I really didn't think I would get in this year. Just keep the faith and your head held up high!

I will be starting nursing classes in the fall. I'm not currently working right now and have all of my support classes completed so I will be completely focused for what is next to come. I've been told that the hospital's will hire you once you've completed your first semester of classes. That is what I am aiming for.
