  1. I would never be rude to anyone because they had an accent, but, If I went to see a doctor and he had a thick accent and he was difficult to understand, I would definitely find a new doctor--even if he or she, were very good at their job, patients need to understand their clinicians! How can we expect compliance when the patients cannot understand some of these thick accents. HR and the hiring managers need to take these things into account when hiring individuals.
  2. At the hospital where I work, if you resign and miss a day at work before that date, you lose all sick and vacation pay when you leave. They may want to explain that your last check will not include those days.
  3. I agree that when a test is given and you can leave after the test is completed, that is a bonus. Why would anyone schedule an interview on a class day--even if it is to take a test? Some schools never allow students to leave early, no matter what the reason. Problems happen and we all have to learn to adjust when they do! What are you going to do when you are working as a nurse and the rules change from one shift to another (and it does happen)? Flexibility is a key in nursing.
  4. Most of the counties in Southern NJ have Technical Institutes that offer an LPN course. The tuition is nothing like the ones you have mentioned. In Burlington County, the tuition is about $7000 a year and includes books and uniforms.
  5. It means grains 20. gr=grains and the XX=20 in Roman Numerals. That is the Apothecary system. Did you learn this in school? Doctors frequently order Tylenol or aspirin grains 10. Is this the first time you have seen this?
  6. Lovenox is not a treatment for a DVT, but used prophylactically to prevent formation of a thrombis.
  7. If you have all of this information, why don't you just report it yourself instead of trying to get other nurses to do it? Are you a nurse? Did this happen in the US? Are you from the US?
  8. No offense taken. I just wanted to reiterate that I am familiar with AS and it is often confused by many as a mental illness. Afterall, it is taught along with Mental Disorders in nursing school, but is clearly not a reason for Cho to commit those horrendous crimes. My point was to ask why his family did not recognize any of these symptoms. How sad that they did not. So many innocent lives could have been saved. You obviously know a lot about this disorder. Do you know someone personally with AS?
  9. I know exactly how you feel. I was diagnosed with labyrinthitis a few years ago and it stopped after I took Antivert. I got it again in November and it has not stopped since than. It is not as bad, but I still have positional vertigo. I have not missed time from work, other than one day. I have seen an ENT doctor who diagnosed me with BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo). After infections, a virus or head injury small bits of particulate matter form in the ear (similar to kidney stones-called ear rocks) which upset the equilibrium and result in dizziness. It happens mainly when changing position in bed or putting the head down or to the affected side. I have not been able to sleep on my right ear since than. I have exercises which I do daily to move the matter in the ear, but it has not completely subsided. I have had ear infection, after ear infection since November, but no one can explain why or how to prevent this from happening. The symptoms you describe sound like BPPV http://www.pennhealth.com/ent/balance/hi/benign.html and here is a link to read more about the condition
  10. I am very familiar with all aspects of Aspergers and I never said that it was a mental illness. I said that he had some type of mental illness along with AS. I am well aware the AS does not mean the person is mentally ill. Cho's isolation, intelligence and poor communication skills do fit the criteria for Aspergers. However, he obviously had some type of mental disorder--not related to Aspergers, possibly schizo affective disorder.
  11. I think that Aspergers is more of a possibility than autism. He does fit the criteria of AS, from what I have heard, but there was also some type of mental disorder along with that. He definitely had anger management issues along with delusions. Who knows what else he was suffering from. As far as the mental hospital saying that he was a danger to himself--is that not a reason for further investigation for some type of commital or referral to follow up care with a threat of commital if the person is non-compliant?
  12. I heard on the Today show that former roomates of Cho said that he claimed to have a girlfriend named, Jelly, and that she was an alien. He also called his roomie to tell him he was away on a road trip--with Vladamir Putin! How did his family not know these things? Did they turn their heads away to avoid seeing that their child was mentally unbalanced? I agree that the laws need to be more stringent about mental illness, but the family needs to share some responsibility in this. And yes, I do feel bad for his family, but how do you close your eyes to this?
  13. Boy are you wrong! I am an instructor and all the students work under her license and it is very nerve wracking. We have to watch them constantly!
  14. I know how you feel. I did that schedule for school and work for two years. It was rough, but manageable. If I could, I would have cut back on my days at work, but I could not afford to do so. I worked 3-12 hour day shifts a week and attended school the other days. I went for 4 months without a day off and than a break came from school. If you are that stressed, tell them you are cutting back to part time, don't ask them. How much longer until you graduate?
  15. Don't forget to use spell check, too. No one wants to hire a nurse who cannot spell or one who is not computer literate.
  16. I know they did not do much for your husband, but I think that $500 is really cheap! Most hospital emergency room visits are 10 times that amount. He is very fortunate that the cause of his pain was something that did not require surgery, and that the MD did not order a lot of tests. I also think the $275 charge for physician services is reasonable.
  17. Have you transferred to another school? Have you just given up? I certainly hope not.
  18. What did you mean that you were off for a while and than went on vacation for a month. Did you take time off from school?
  19. http://www.cprassociate.com/aclspretest.php Here is a pretest that I found very helpful with ACLS. I have enjoyed the class each time I took it.
  20. Are you looking for a position in psych? If so, applying at a state institution usually pays much higher salaries. They also offer paid state holidays along with generous sick days and vacation days. I am not sure where you are looking to work. There is definitely a nursing shortage with the biggest nursing need in medical surgical and critical care nursing. But, you need experience before you can make more money.
  21. I have never heard of negotiating a higher salary-especially for a new grad with no experience. Your education level can also make a difference in salary in some hospitals. If you want to make a larger salary, first you need some experience and than you can work for an agency, hospital pool or traveling agency. The salaries for most of those agencies pay the highest rate. During your first year, offer to work a lot of overtime, including nights, weekends and holidays to increase your salary. I live on the East Coast and there is no negotiating salaries here-just a lot of hard work!
