Do you identify yourself as a nurse when you or your family are a patient?
i generally do not make a habit of saying that I am a nurse because my being a nurse should not change the way that any health care professonal handles their job. Not to say that I wouldn't do it if I thought it would help.

Poll for those who have already taken NCLEX..
1. How many questions did you take on NCLEX? 75 (NCLEX RN) 2. What study materials did you use? Did you take a test review course? Mostly Saunders, and No I did not do review course 3. Did your SON offer any testing (ERI, ATI, HESI)? ATI in last quarter and an RN predictor 4. How long did you wait for results of the test, or are you still waiting? 48 hr, but did the PVT got good pop up after an hr 5. What were your thoughts coming out of the test (total disbelief, certainty you had failed, confident you had passed)? I was crying and had to call my Mom to "talk me down" I was certain I had failed 6. Was this your first attempt at NCLEX? Yes and thank GOD I never have to take it again!!!

Opinions, Is this illegal?
Thanks Caliotter for pointing out that indeed that is what these are... opinions. I work for Amedisys, as a RN case manager. I am not a cheerleader for Amedisys , however, the office I work for is excellent and our DOO is a caring and medicare conscious person. She has encouraged me to use MY nursing judgement in answering the oasis questions, and we are never encouraged to admit patient's who do not meet the homebound status. I would like to clarify a theme that I am picking up here in this thread, and if I am wrong, please enlighten me. Is it the majority opinion that in order to be homebound that one has to be dying and cannot leave their home for any reason?? I have been taught that a person can leave to shop for groceries,go to medical appoinments, church, or even the hair salon, as long as it is infrequent and it must be a taxing effort in order for them to do so. I do not intend to be fraudulent to medicare, if I have it wrong, I need to know.

I am afraid to admit that I am a registered nurse!
Part of being a good nurse RN or otherwise is researching a topic if you don't know the answer off the top of your head. You are a RN it doesn't make you a doctor, or a psychic! Give yourself a break! I am sure you learned something in nursing school or you wouldn't be able to even call yourself a RN at all. You can learn from books and clinical, but experience takes time! Keep your head up and be proud of yourself. You earned the right to call yourself RN:yeah:

Cna challenge lpn boards
I have a problem with this statement as a whole, though parts may be true. I would like to say that I started as a CNA for about 5 years, went to school for my LPN worked for 13 years as an LPN before finally deciding to get my RN. I got good grades in school, and feel that I am a fast thinker, but in NO WAY do I think "challenging" a board exam is a substitute for foundational learning! You have to have the basics to be able to critically apply what you know. The difference between an LPN and an RN is 8 months of critical thinking, increased knowledge of pathophysiology, pharmacology, patient education, community health, and more acute care experience! If you haven't done the extra 8 months of schooling you can't really say there " is no substantial difference in the complexity or breadth of the material presented. " That is a false statement and insulting as well! That would be like saying a surgical tech could become a general surgeon after 10 years on the job. Can you honestly think that working as a CNA is "close enough" to an LPN, or a surgical tech is "close enough" to a surgeon to perform on you? Not this girl! And I have worked every aspect of the nursing profession from CNA to RN, each level has it's similarities and differences. Respect it for what it is, and earn the next step as it should be earned. Short cuts are not a good idea for sound patient care. *stepping down from the soap box*

How long did you study for NCLEX RN?
Graduated 8-20-09. Tested 09-24-09. Wasn't terribly focused on studying until after 09-01-09. Studied about 2 hours a day on avg and did at least 75 questions a day. Saunders, exam cram, incredibly easy, and LaCharity(prioritization/delegation) were my books. Passed with 75 questions.

SAUNDERS, all you need? HELP!!
Personally I used anything that I could get my hands on, but that's just me! I passed my RN boards 09-24-09. Saunders 4th edition was my main book, but I also used exam cram, incredibly easy, and prioritization book by Lacharity. If you can't afford a lot of books and insist on owning one, I rec the Saunders,I suggest for freebies check your local library, you may be surprised at the resources you can find there. If you have buddies that passed with other books, ask them to loan to you. The link for the NCLEX 3500 still works, you just have to find it... I used it a week or so before my exam, and the link came from here. Practice the test questions and think about WHY you are choosing the answer you are choosing, it helps with application which is what you need to pass the NCLEX. I had 3-4 SATA, 5 meds, and rest were inf ctrl and prioritization/delegation,and patient teaching( i got 75 questions). DO what you must to continue to practice questions that make you apply what you already know-this is not a recall test, it's an application of knowledge to different situations. I wish you all the luck, persistence pays off I promise you!! Meems

Amedisys
I have worked for Amedisys for almost 3 years now. I have never been shot.:stone:chuckle Started as an LPN( they are the only hh agency here that uses LPN) They helped me with tuition reimbursement and I start with them as a RN on Monday. They have liason people to help keep referrals up, PR to facilitate communication with the area doctors, so you stay busy, they pay mileage, have decent benefits and are forward thinking in what is coming for Medicare etc. Is it a finely tuned machine... no! But I have been in nursing since 95(LPN) and have never worked at a completely smooth running place! I feel appeciated and respected, I get steady work, and am paid nicely for the work I do. Some of it will depend on your DOO and CM( mine are the bomb:yeah:) Good Luck to you. If I can be of any further assistance let me know!

Pearsonvue Trick Is this TRUE? Does it work every time?
:chuckle I am Giddy with relief. I did the attempt to re-register @ pearson vue about 3 hours after my NCLEX RN on Sept 24 and got the now infamous "contact your member board" pop-up, a classmate took it the same day and got the cc page. Found out with quick results this morning I passed NCLEX RN, she did not. I have never heard of anyone that followed the directions, got the cc page that passed. That 7.95 was the best money I have ever spent!! I am a RN!!!!!!!!!!!!!:hpygrp:

Has anyone attended the online LP to RN program at Lower Columbia College?
I don't live there, but haven't heard a lot about racist activity. If you do the onlie option, you do not have to go to Longview for morse than a few weeks if you choose to do clinicals in one of the other offered cities such as Portland, Vancouver, or Olympia. If you have f urther concerned, email Karen Joiner she is the LPN 2 RN online coordinator and may be able to give you more information that may ease your mind. Good Luck to you!:typing

Lower Columbia
quilted star. I do work full time as a home health nurse and spend probably 3-5 hours daily on my schoolwork(more on weekends as I don't work weekends). It can be overwhelming, but I ask myself: how bad do I want it? I want this. B-A-D! I still get to spend time with my daughter, just less time watching 24, Damages, and CSI than I used to(thank goodness for TIVO). As far as the OSBN, we have several nurses who are from Oregon, so I assume they intend to sit for boards in their own state, but no special or different requirements have been brought up to my knowledge. Good Luck to you.

Lower Columbia
I don't know if you have heard anything back but wanted to let you know what I know. I am currently a student in the LPN to RN program @ LCC. I understand there are 40 positions available, and you can do full time (takes a year) or part time(takes 1.5 years). It is a first come first served type of thing and is a fast paced trip lemme tell ya! Finished first quarter(3 classes 240,241, 242) from September12 to December12, you average 2-3 tests per week, pluspapers, posts and care plans. This is not easy. Finals are proctored so be prepared for that. Let me know if I can be of any further assistance.:nuke:

Lost one
It appears that you were meeting the needs of your patient to the best of your ability. There are some things in life that you have no control over: this is one of those things. You checked on your patient , assessed and met the needs as appropriately as possible, and attempted to resuscitate when discovered. What else could you have done? Do not beat yourself up over it, learn from it and grow.

i failed 2nd semester, i need some guidance
I would certainly look harder at the difficult topics, the topics that you were comfortable and knowledgable in would have no need to go over them again. Outlining is great for self study as far as I am concerned. But you have to be able to apply what you have learned. NCLEX books may assist in that aspect. Good Luck to you!

Has anyone attended the online LP to RN program at Lower Columbia College?
Most colleges that offer a full nursing program will allow a LPN to "bridge" into the program as long as the requirements are met and there is room. I know my LPN summer clinicals we had at least two who had to go through clinicals with us to bridge into the RN program. Check yur local colleges and see what works for your need. Good luck:up:

Has anyone attended the online LP to RN program at Lower Columbia College?
When do you plan on applying? they have a part time and full time option both with the same clinical rotation in spring/ summer. Part time takes 1.5 years and FT is one year. i suggest you look @ the programs required chem andMicro, and complete them while you are finishing up your hours. You can always supply proof of completion after applying, but I think you have to have worked the 1000 hrs in order to enroll. The ladies @ the college are pretty laid back and will help you. Will let you know more as I go!

Has anyone attended the online LP to RN program at Lower Columbia College?
They outline quite clearly what they require for acceptance into the program. My friend A had all her requirements and got her spot right away, but another LPN I work w/ and I needed to take some courses before we were accepted. I suggest you get all the paperwork together and send it in, they will need an official copy of transcripts and let you know if any classes are needed prior to your acceptance and give you the deadline. Pretty easy to communicate w/ but @ times it is kinda hurry up and wait as far as the "am I in or not". Good news is: once you have applied, yourspot in the program is reserved for you as long as you complete any neeeded pre req's( I needed Math and Soc, which I took @ a different on-line college) before the deadline. I am going for orientation on 09-22-08 (mandatory) in Longview, where they will outline things like the course management sys(ANGEL) and the syllabi, so hopefully I will have a little better understanding of how this is going to work. Any particular areas you want to know about? Let me know, and I will do my best to keep in touch:rolleyes: M

Has anyone attended the online LP to RN program at Lower Columbia College?
I am enrolled and start in just a couple of weeks. You have to have worked 1000 hours as a LPN in order to apply for a spot. It is distance learning for the most part, but you have to go to Longview for about 9 weeks in the late spring and all of summer quarter for clinicals. Hope this helps. Good Luck to you.

Male Chest Hair and Scrub Tops
i love this thread! Ok.. Hairy chest.... fan of manscaping, but don't think t's should be a requirement unless doing a lot of sterile field procedures etc. Does it look more professional, probably, does it MAKE a nurse more professional. NO! As an endowed female, I tend to take care that I wear clothes that cover, not clothes that make me look like I am workin for singles! But Hey, that's just me...

1 year in and I cannot do bedside anymore!
I think almost any kind of nursing has it's own unique sets of challenges, and we all get frustrated. Have you looked into home health? The pay is decent, you have some flex with your hours and you have a caseload you manage, but not everyone is on you @ the same time . I personally love it!
