Age Discrimination in Nursing
My goal is to stay with my company as I have great benefits. Why should I feel I need to leave to be treated fairly! LOL. And I'm not 67 but 65. And even so, I don't feel as though I have a stamp on my forehead that says "expired." Like a piece of meat in the supermarket. Training costs? The program is 3 months long. They are not loosing anything. And...let me make this clear...this is discrimination. Please don't defend them. But if you insist, then come talk to me in ten years and tell me how you feel about your job in L&D. If I was black and they said, well you're probably looking to take it easy would we be OK with that? Not hired because I'm too feminine and probably gay, would we be OK with that. But age, yes many are OK with that. How old are you? Honey, you will soon find out!

Minnesota Nurse Staffing Bill, Mayo Clinic Exemption
I work at Mayo and I would no longer recommend it to anyone. There is a serious integrity problem going on. To the post about involving bedside nurses to make things better -- NO! They are not doing this. We are short staffed, administration is indifferent. Patient care is declining because the services are also overworked.

Mayo Clinic Nurse Residency October 2023
Mayo used to be one of the best, if not the best hospital in the country. It is no longer. Yes, it's a good place to get a job, the ratios are better than most, but it is no longer a good hospital and the work environment is bad. Please don't look at Mayo with rose colored glasses. Things changed after COVID.

Age Discrimination in Nursing
I would like to share my story on age discrimination. Please read my story and offer advice and feedback on how I can deal with a situation where I was told, "this is not a job for someone approaching retirement age who is looking to take it easier". I have been a nurse for 14 years and I am 65 years of age. For 8 years I've worked at one of the top hospitals in the United States, voted year after year as one of America's Best Hospitals. I have eight years of both positive employee reviews and 360 comments, and I have been told I am well liked by everyone. I know, talk is cheap! I applied for an internal job posting, a case management fellowship position. After submitting my resume and internal reviews, I was scheduled for an interview over Zoom. The interview concluded with a question and answer period. At the end of this period the person in charge of the fellowship program made the following comment to me. "This is a very difficult and demanding job. Our case managers have 18 patients, and you as a nurse only have 2. That's a big difference and many nurses don't realize how difficult the position is. It is not a good fit for someone approaching retirement age and looking to take it easier." I was shocked and I was so dumfounded that this would be said to me during an interview that I did not even respond. During the following two weeks I related this story to all of my friends, "Do you think they were talking about me, or am I over reacting". So stupid was I until it finally dawned on me, "They were not talking about you, they were talking directly to you!" I was told that HR would let me know, and I never heard back from anyone, period. Finally two weeks after the start of the fellowship program, I stumbled online to my "career" page and I saw that I was no longer being considered for the position. I pride myself on great patient care and I love the hospital that I work for, in fact for many years I worshiped it and felt honored and privileged to work there. Now I feel hurt, angry, unappreciated and I feel as though nothing I have done for the organization really mattered. But after that disappointment came anger, that I could be treated this way. I am feeling I want to fight back. I am considering calling the compliance hot line but I fear retaliation. I have a pension and great benefits and do not want to loose my job. I feel that HR represents the company, not me. I am considering reaching out to the EEOC and filing a formal complaint. I am unsure what to do but in my heart I realize that not speaking out and doing nothing is allowing this kind of behavior to continue. I would now like to call the company out on their behavior. Any advice anyone can share would be appeciated.

Is Discrimination too strong a word?
I would love some feedback from fellow nurses. I sometimes take care of covid-19 positive patients on a separate pod set up to maintain safety. I utilize PPE and feel comfortable. I have recently had a negative blood drawn antibody test (but as we know the accuracy of these tests are being questioned). Now for my question: I have been going to PT for ongoing back problems that go as far back as two years. The good new, by back is great, now they are working on my knee. Today I was told since I'm dong very well they may want to end my case because of the fact that I take care of covid-19 patients and here in AZ, the numbers are climbing. Even though I am asymptotic, they want to talk to the owner of the clinic to see is she is comfortable with me coming. I get it but I feel like someone just came by and popped by balloon! Frustrated. I would like to continue therapy. I also scheduled an appointment with a vascular surgeon for a couple of bad varicose veins that I would like to have treated in the office. I had extensive treatment for this three years ago and would like to follow up with two that are now starting to become symptomatic. All the procedures are done in the office including phlebectomy. I get it, elective procedure. Can they refuse to see me since I am a nurse taking care of covid patients? I get it, don't want anyone to be uncomfortable around me but this is beginning to bother me. Thanks for listening to my rant.

Failed Pre-Employment Drug Screen
Insensitive to say the least!

No opinions please just facts
We should be more concerned with opiate addicted nurses than we are with nurse who occasionally smoke marijuana. I have not seen anyone die of marijuana but I have sure seem them die of ETOH. Our society is hypocritical and the medical community needs to speak up. Pot should be legalized, then concentrate on helping folks with their emotional problems instead of locking them up.

Timeline for endorsing RN license to CA
My experience with the CA BON is as follows: CA will request transcripts from every school you attended. For instance, if you took an online course from one school to fulfill a pre-req, you need to contact that school and have a transcript sent. I found this strange since the school you graduate from accepted the outside course and it appears on your transcript, but CA wants to see the original transcript from the school that delivered the course. I would go online to your school's website and request that your transcripts be sent to the CA BON. If you can't do it online, I would call the school and request transcripts over the phone. Make sure you have the BON mailing address to give to the school. Sorry, I don't know anything about third party transcript services. I would feel safer going directly through the school. I think CA BON is a little slow but you will get your license once everything is submitted! Good luck!

Is Banner Health hiring ADN new grads?
hi IsabellAZ I am in that boat too
-
Is Banner Health hiring ADN new grads?
Yes you are correct. The community colleges and other schools offering ADN in AZ are ripping the students off. These students need to be getting BSN. Please get your BSN don't waste time on an associate degree. I am an associate degree nurse and i know.
-
Is Banner Health hiring ADN new grads?
Your hunch is right on. I personally do not think they are hiring ADN nurses unless they are forced to because of a lack of BSN applicants. Right now these is no nursing shortage. I have worked for banner for three years. I do believe your hunch is correct.

My story and some questions from a confused older student
Get your BSN if you can. Way too many community college grads with associates, they will have a very difficult time getting a job until there is actually a shortage of nurses again. There is not nursing shortage right now, and hospitals do not want associate degrees. I doubt any school will own up to this...
-
associates degree worth it?
Your bachelor may help you even if you only have and Associate Nursing degree but everyone contemplating nursing school needs to understand that If you don't have a BSN you may not get a job. Sorry, but this is the directions things are headed. If the community colleges are not making this clear to students then they are doing them a real disservice.

Do you know if any hospitals in Phoenix are hiring new grads???
Good luck on your interview. I will no be attending the interview next week. I had tentatively cancelled due to a family emergency. I thought about then going ahead with it next week but after talking to the recruiter I decided not to. She said verde valley was accepting no new grads and that flagstaff would be accepting less than what was originally forecasted. My goals has been to move to Phoenix. Have you had any response from any Phoenix hospitals? I am thinking about trying one more time to send resume to every job opening I see and follow up with the recruiter but it seems like an uphill battle.

Banner Programs & AZ Residency?
The housing costs in phoenix seem so much better than the east coast for sure! I was paying 1400 for a one bedroom apt in a high rise. When i started nurisng school i was forced to econonmize and moved into a stuido, old, but large and nice. Rent was typically 900 and it was on specail for 700, needless to say i took it immediately! Where have you been on the East Coast? i have friends in LA and have visited N.Calif. once. The entire state is breathtaking, but the housing costs seem as bad if not worse than here. One good thing I have noticed about phoenix is that the salaries seem comparable to the east coast, which start around 26-27 for new grads.

Banner Programs & AZ Residency?
Im in love with Calif and have friends there but the cost of housing there is as bad as it is here on the east coast. I visited Phoenix four times and really like it. Seems like a good compromise for me. I am really sold on the housing costs. I want to buy a house and I will never be able to buy one here in Washington DC.

New Grad Fellowship Programs
Hey thanks for the reply. I have heard good things about mayo and contacted them a few weeks ago. They sent me a brochure packet and told me that for a fellowship in June, I should probably start taking to them in late January. What was your experience like in the interview process with Mayo? Were you local in the Phoenix area when you applied? I am currently living in Md. and will be moving out in may as soon as i graduate. Thanks.

New Grad Fellowship Programs
Hi everyone, I am graduating in May of next year and I'm looking for a good fellowship at a hospital in Phoenix. I am hoping to hear from anyone who has some good advice about different hospitals and what they have to offer. I 'm currently working as a PCT on a cardiac stepdown unit as I finsish school and I have learned alot there. I am interested in ED, ICU, and maybe PEDS, or maybe something similiar to where I'm at now, cardiac or telemetry. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. Dave
